Dakota County School Travel Safety AssessmentsOPEN-ENDED COMMENTSThe following themes were the most common responses to the open-ended survey question: Most common themes: Sidewalk/trails – Requests for infrastructure to overcome a specific walking/bikingbarrier (e.g. “need pedestrian paths along all major roads” or “need a path to the westside of the neighborhood”). Driver behavior – Identified locations where there are concerns due to driver behaviorsuch as speeding, u-turn movements, and failing to yield. Intersections – Identified intersections that pose crossing challenges or make users feeluncomfortable.Other themes that were noted:o Crossing safety – Identified needs for crossing guards or better crossing infrastructure;identified specific roadways that pose crossing barriers.o Bus transportation – Concerns with fee for transportation service.o Trip choice – Identified factors that influenced the reasons for their choice of modeto/from school.o Student training – Comments on the value of teaching children how to bike/walk toschool safely.Interactive Map ResultsA total of 74 routes were drawn on the map and 133 pins were dropped. Users could also attachcomments to each of their routes or pins. The feedback gathered through the interactive map is beingused to inform study recommendations. Specific route and location feedback gathered through the mapwill be summarized for each school in the final report.MAP FEEDBACKThe common themes in the pin and route comments were: Barriers to walking and biking (pin) and Routes you wish you could take: Respondentsnoted gaps in infrastructure along high speed roadways, intersections withoutpedestrian crossing infrastructure such as marked crosswalks, traffic signals or flashers,and pedestrian push buttons, sidewalk/trail gaps on school grounds, and locations withuncomfortable or close proximity between the sidewalk/trail and vehicles.Traffic circulation/congestion: Respondents noted turning movements near schools,areas with limited visibility, and areas where driver behavior such as speeding ordistracted driving are issues.Routes you currently take: Respondents noted existing sidewalk/trail as the maincontributing factor in their route choice.
