Sę EĚđĆđĎĆ PĆėĎĘčFĎėĘę SĚēĉĆĞ Ĕċ AĉěĊēęNĔěĊĒćĊė 29, 2020Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Eulalia Parish,“Be watchful! Be Alert! is the warning that Jesus gives to his discipleswhich we will hear on the First Sunday of Advent (Mk 13:33). This warningis good to us all at the moment while we are preparing for Thanksgiving, which is an annual national holiday marked by religious observances and a traditional meal including turkey in North America. It’s true that many people planto travel eagerly to join family and friends despite the surge in cases of theCOVID-19 virus.Thanksgiving Day falls between the last Sunday of the liturgical year “A”: JesusChrist, King of the Universe, and the First Sunday of Advent, year “B”. It istherefore important for us to seek wisdom from the two Gospels so that ourminds may be enlightened. Though two different gospels, they come togethernicely to help us prepare well for that moment of life. What I say to you, I say to all: “Watch!”, the saying from the Gospel of Mark (First Sunday of Advent 13:33-37)reminds us that the time of the Lord’s coming is kept a secret, and that we may be engaged to stand always upon ourguard. The first two weeks of Advent celebration is the anticipation of the second coming of Christ. Indeed, JesusChrist, the King of the Universe fulfills that anticipation. The Gospel of the day (Mtt 25:31-36) specifies everythingthat happens when Christ comes. He will separate the good people from the bad ones. The good will be rewardedwith eternal life and the bad will be punished forever. The norm for his judgement is a simple one: you did for theleast of my brethren, you did for me. Jesus does not ask people for their academic qualifications, nor their businesssuccesses, nor political ambitions, but these questions: Did you feed the hungry? Did you quench the thirsty? Didyou clothe the naked? Did you heal the sick? Did you welcome a stranger? And did you visit a prisoner? These areall simple actions in life which require the good gift of faith.“Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of dailylife” (Sat. Lk 21:34) is great life advice from Jesus. Thanksgiving is a beautiful time to be together as a family tocelebrate the harvest and to give thanks to God for His blessings. We thank God for the gift of family, the gift oflife, because we have seen with our own eyes of those many broken families and the loss of lives during the pandemic this year.As we go home to our families for the Thanksgiving holiday, a catechetical lesson is helpful (no.1346): The Eucharist is a “consecratory thanksgiving” and indeed is the Thanksgiving. It refers to both the Catholic Mass and the sacrament of Holy Communion. While we are home, let us join others in the Eucharist celebration in church and thenstart to practice that charity to our loved ones at home: serve one another at the table. When we go back to work orschool, we will try to serve our neighbors who are in need.“Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.” (Ps 80:4)Have a blessed Thanksgiving Day!Fr. John Chen

TčĊ UēćėĔĐĊē WĔėĉ . .ćĞ MĎĈčĆĊđ CĚēēĎēČčĆĒHere we are again, Thanksgiving once more! This year, 2020, has been a year of surprises. Historically, it will godown as something very unexpected; and yes, I guess, I can still be the master of understatement. Even the most fervent mind in Hollywood could not have come up with the reality of the world's experience of this pandemic. It hascaused us to realize how much we do not control our lives and how interdependent we are on each other. The stories and experiences from March to today has been an epic journey. Seemingly cramming all of the beauty andthe crisis into a situation we could not escape but only react, respond, and adapt to. It has brought out the very best inus, and sometimes the worst. Patience and tolerance have recently been in short supply for many, as the weariness ofseparation, illness, financial issues, and health problems have piled up around us. However, there is still much to bethankful for. We can be grateful for the scientists working tirelessly on vaccines and treatments, which we will soonsee. Work that typically takes years has been completed in months. For those who have given their time and treasuregenerously, in many cases putting their lives on the line to treat, feed, and nurture the less fortunate during the pandemic. The spiritual nourishment given by priests, lay ministers, musicians, service volunteers, and teachers, keeps usall aligned with Christ during these difficult times. For myself, now separated for some time from my family and friends in New England, I find myself in my third yearhere at Mater Dolorosa. A beautiful retreat center nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains. God has beengood to Sally and me. To say this has been a blessing would be an understatement. In this third year, I have had thegift of traveling through the 300th anniversary of the Passionist Congregation. St Paul of the Cross, the founder, hasbeen instructing me in his ways through the auspices of his latter-day followers here in Southern California. My gratitude (for being a small part in this journey throughthe pandemic), is featured in this reflection on theThe Passionist (at the doorway)Passionists example of Christ's mercy to us all.Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!Standing, arms apart, as if beckoning,The black tunic speaking an intention.Moving from the entrance,Light streams towards the visitor.Nothing said, but a smile of welcome presents itself,And encourages the visitor forward.Once inside, seating and libation offered,The Passionist joins the visitor, saying little, but encouraging conversation, without agenda. The listening begins, punctuated by silence,As the Blood of Christ enters the room. The red mist coloring them both in love. Then the secrets flow,Slowly at first, then, full disclosure.Open-hearts reveals what was hidden,And the Passionist listens, and cries inside,They are one in sharing. The Passion; once again, is spilled to the floor.Words are swallowed deeply by both talker and listener,Changes begin within,Imperceptible at first,Then more measurable,As the movement of the Passion of Christ becomes incarnate,Once again. The DoorwayAnd a visitor leaves changed,And the Passionist returns again, to the doorway.
