Safety RequirementsSafety SummaryBefore Applying PowerVerify that all safety precautions are taken.The power cable inlet of the instrument is used to disconnect theinstrument from the mains in case of hazard. The instrument mustbe positioned so that the operator can easily access the powercable inlet.When the instrument is mounted in a rack, the rack must beprovided with an easily accessible mains switch.General operation advises the mains supply voltage fluctuationsare not to exceed 10% of nominal supply voltageGround the InstrumentTo minimize shock hazard, the instrument chassis and cover mustbe connected to an electrical protective earth ground. Theinstrument must be connected to the ac power mains through agrounded power cable, with the ground wire firmly connected toan electrical ground (safety ground) at the power outlet. Anyinterruption of the protective (grounding) conductor ordisconnection of the protective earth terminal will cause apotential shock hazard that could result in personal injury.Do not Operate in an Explosive AtmosphereDo not operate the instrument in the presence of flammable gasesor fumes.Do not Remove the Instrument CoverOperating personnel must not remove instrument covers.Component replacement and internal adjustments must be madeonly by qualified personnel.Instruments that appear damaged or defective should be madeinoperative and secured against unintended operation until theycan be repaired by qualified service personnel.10Keysight 81133A/81134A Pulse Generator User’s Guide, April 2015

Initial InspectionSafety RequirementsInitial InspectionInspect the shipping container for damage. If the container orcushioning material is damaged, keep it until the contents of theshipment have been checked for completeness and the instrumenthas been verified both mechanically and electrically.WARNINGTo avoid hazardous electric shock, do not perform electrical testswhen there are signs of shipping damage to any part of theinstrument's outer covers or panels.Check if the Keysight 81133A or 81134A shipping containercontains the following standard deliverables: The Keysight 81133A or 81134A Pulse Generator The Getting Started Brochure and the Product CD The Keysight IO Libraries Suite on CD with Quick Start Sheet,which shows how to connect the instrument to a PC running theKeysight IO Libraries Suite A power cable A USB cableIf the contents are incomplete, if there is mechanical damage, or ifthe instrument does not work within its specifications, notify thenearest Keysight office. Safety RequirementsPower RequirementsPower RequirementsNOTEWhen the front panel switch is off, the instrument is in “standby”mode. The instrument is disconnected from the AC line power onlyby disconnecting the power cord.The instrument can operate from any single-phase AC powersource supplying 100 – 240 V in the frequency range from 47 – 63Hz. The maximum power consumption is 200 VA with all optionsinstalled. When the instrument is switched on the power supplyadapts automatically to the applied AC power (Auto Selection) andmonitors the AC power range during operation.Performance RequirementsFor best performance of data transfer and for EMC compliance usea Keysight 82357-61601 Mini-USB cable only.Ventilation RequirementsMake sure that there is adequate clearance of 50 mm (2 in) at thetop and right side to ensure adequate air flow. Front Panel OverviewIntroduction to the Keysight 81133A/81134A Pulse Generator Clock InputThe clock input is used to apply an external clock signal or areference signal for the internal PLL if a higher frequencyaccuracy than 50ppm is required.This input can be AC or DC terminated. If it is DC isterminated, the termination voltage can be set.For more information, see “Clock Sources” on page 75. Start InputThe start input is used to start the instrument on an externalsignal.For more information, see “Start Mode” on page 77. Trigger OutputThe trigger output can be used to trigger another instrument.For more information, see “Trigger Out” on page 77.LEDsThe front panel of the 81133A/81134A pulse generator contains thefollowing LEDs:LEDDescriptionUnlockWhen this LED is lit, the frequency entered for the external clockdoes not match the actual input from the external clock. In thisstate, the internal PLL is not locked and the instrument's outputsmay not be within specification.You have to either reenter the frequency of the external clock, or execute the Measure function. See “Clock Sources” on page 75 fordetails.ActiveWhen lit, indicates that the instrument is either in external or directexternal clock mode. A valid external clock signal has to be appliedto the clock input.If not lit, the internal clock source is used.ArmedIndicates that the instrument is waiting for a signal at the Start Input.When the specified signal arrives, the instrument starts generatingsignals.Port LEDs Indicate the status of the port.
