Every year, Engineers withoutBorders Canada (EWB)publishes a Failure Report inconjunction with its AnnualReport. The Failure Reportincludes cases written byleadership and staff memberswho describe national officefailures, venture failures, andchapter failures, along with theirlessons learned. By publicallycelebrating failures, EWBincreases incentives to shareinformation, take risks, and becreative. What would it look like for socialsector organizations tocollectively share failures in anopen way and create systems forlearning from them?Source: Engineers Without Borders. “Engineers Without Borders FailureReport.” 2016.

Venture capital investorsrecognize that many of theirinvestments will fail. In fact, theindustry rule of thumb is “40-4020” – 40% of VC-backedcompanies fail outright, 40%break even, and 20% are "homeruns."What would it look like if funderssaw their grantmaking as aportfolio and specificallydedicated some of its resourcesto high-risk, high-rewardinvestments?Source: Deborah Gage. “The Venture Capital Secret: 3 out of 4 Start-UpsFail.” Wall Street Journal, September 20, 2012.

Provenance, a UK-basedcompany, is using newblockchain technology to stampout illegal fishing. Blockchain is adigital ledger originally used forthe currency Bitcoin. It enableslocal fishermen to send SMSmessages to register their catchon the blockchain, and theidentification of the fish is thentransferred to a supplier at eachstage along the supply chain.Information about the completejourney of the fish can beaccessed and verified by endbuyers using their smartphones. What would it look like ifphilanthropy leveragedtechnology to make its data andresults more transparent soothers could learn from orconfirm findings?Source: Tom Levitt. “Blockchain technology trialed to tackle slavery in the fishing industry.”The Guardian. Buffer, a social mediamanagement company, embraces the principle of“default to transparency.” Bufferpublicly shares all financialinformation, including individualsalaries, real-time revenue, andwhere each cent of a purchasegoes. All of their code is opensource, and each email sent canbe seen by any member of theteam. What would it look like if socialsector organizations shared theirresults and learning by default, making exceptions whennecessary, rather than thereverse?Source: Buffer.com. “Transparency at Buffer.” No Date.

Quid provides text-based dataanalysis of millions ofdocuments, including newsarticles, blog posts, companyprofiles, and patents. It offersinsight by visually organizing thecontent of these documents sothat users can identify patterns, commonalities, connections, andgaps. Quid also allows users toidentify the most frequentlydiscussed individuals, organizations, topics, and terms. What if philanthropy could usetechnology to conduct analysesthat would identify unseenpatterns across grant reports, research, and other importantdatasets?Source: Quid. “Quid in Action” and “Next Level Tech.” No Date.

Earth Microbiome is a crowdsourced open science effort toanalyze microbial life on theplanet that includes the mappingof “dark matter” as part of itsefforts. Up to 99% of microbialorganisms are deemed unknowndark matter, which biologistscan’t culture in a lab due tolimited knowledge or insufficientgrowth conditions. What if funders could broadlymap out existing knowledge tohelp identify where there arecritical gaps in information thatneed to be addressed?Source: Earth Microbiome Project. “About.” No Date; Earth Microbiome Project.“Objectives.” No Date. While widespread ATMinstallation occurred in the1980s, the ability to use the ATMcard of one financial institutionat an ATM machine of anotherfinancial institution was notoriginally possible. In the early90s national electronic fundstransfer (EFT) networks werecompleted, which enabled theATM cards of a financialinstitution in a network to beused at ATM machines thatbelonged to another networkmember. What would it look like if fundersinvested in the technologicalinfrastructure and standards thatmade data sharing andcomparisons easier?Source: Jitin Asnaani. “CommonWell is Banking on NationwideInteroperability.” Commonwell Health Alliance. We have common time zonesas a result of thetranscontinental railroad.Railway clerk William F. Allenwas so exasperated by the chaoscaused by the 8,000 local timeszones in the U.S. that he foughttirelessly to standardize timeinto four zones. The Lime Street experimentdismantled assumptions about thecause of arson. The experimentcarefully re-staged a fire that hadrecently occurred, outfitting a nearlyidentical house nearby with similarfurniture. The crime analyst was ableto demonstrate that “signs ofaccelerant use” were possible, evenwhen an accelerant had not beenused. The ATF Fire ResearchLaboratory, an experimental facilitydedicated to understanding firebehavior, was created to conductforensic fire science and engineeringtests, including large-scale firereplications. What would it look like if philanthropyhad an intermediary that could serveas a central clearinghouse to test therelevance of new methods and dataanalytics approaches to the socialsector context?Source: ATF. “ATF Fire Research Laboratory.” No Date. Nonprofits don’t generally havethe resources, skills orincentives to rigorously evaluateimpact. What could it look like iffoundations were responsible fortesting the quality of broad ideas(e.g. does microfinance work)and nonprofits were onlyresponsible for assessing thequality of their implementation(e.g. monitoring)?

INSTRUCTIONSYou can flip through this deck yourself to spark ideasor use it for group brainstorming. For groupbrainstorming: Identify a monitoring, evaluation, and learningchallenge for which you’d like to brainstormsolutions. Deal out the full deck of cards around yourtable. It doesn’t matter if people have slightlydifferent numbers of cards in their hand. Look at your hand of cards. For each card, thinkabout the adjacency described and consider: Whatare the key attributes of the adjacency? How is itsimilar to your challenge? Choose the cards with the adjacencies that aremost interesting to you. Why is it interesting? Howcould you adapt the solution to your challenge? “Play” the cards at the center of the table.Explain the adjacencies you chose to the group, andtell why you chose them and what connection theyhave to your challenge. Go around the whole table, with each person playing their cards. Don’t take morethan 30 seconds explaining each card to your group. Discuss the cards on the table. Identifysolutions related to each adjacency. Record keyinsights and potential solutions on a flip chart. Share back with the full group if you’ve broken upinto different groups.About DeloitteDeloitte refers to one or more of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, a UK private company limited by guarantee(“DTTL”), its network of member firms, and their related entities.
