Welcometo theAutumnseason atthe RNCMAs we embark on our 41st year, we lookforward to a jam-packed Autumn season.RNCM Opera presents Donizetti’s comic operaL’elisir d’amore (8, 10, 12 and 14 December)and in total contrast, Music Theatre Walesreturns with Mark-Anthony Turnage’s explosivefirst opera based on Steven Berkoff’s play Greek(12 November).Jazz ‘supergroup’ The Impossible Gentlemenfeatures RNCM regulars, guitarist Mike Walkerand pianist Gwilym Simcock, alongsideUS rhythm section Adam Nussbaum andSteve Rodby and they’ll be showcasing theirlatest album (15 October). Also featured arebrilliant jazz improvisers Empirical who willbe collaborating with RNCM alumnae theBenyounes Quartet (31 October). The RNCMBig Band kicks off another year with twoprojects: with sax player Julian Arguëlles (16November) and a Christmas show salutingBenny Goodman’s legendary 1938 CarnegieHall performance featuring clarinettist Pete Long(11 December).Our folk programming strand goes from strengthto strength with shows by Martin Taylor andMartin Simpson (8 October), Martin Carthyand Dave Swarbrick (26 October), TheaGilmore (17 November) and Irish singer/2songwriter Heidi Talbot (21 November). Pluswe’re delighted to welcome back RNCMfavourite Kathryn Tickell, this time performingwith a group of other talented musicians knownas The Side (2 December).We explore many corners of the globe overthe next few months. Malian singer/songwriterRokia Traoré’s sound is constructed around rockriffs but with a distinctly West African feel (11November). Following his sell-out show at theRNCM in 2007, Hugh Masekela returns, thistime with his long-time friend and collaboratorLarry Willis (13 November). Closer to homebut with a Caribbean flavor, Soul Caribbeanis an evening of songs made famous by artistssuch as Bob Marley and Rihanna, featuring thetalents of the Manchester World Voices Choir,RNCM Gospel Singers and soloists includingThe Brand New Heavies’ Carleen Anderson (25October). And Graphic Scores is a transatlanticvision of music from the 50s to the present dayfeaturing innovative pianist Joanna MacGregor(4 October).Looking towards cinema for inspiration, we goback to 1936 and Charlie Chaplin’s celluloidclassic Modern Times (26 October). A bitingbut darkly funny critique of the dehumanisingeffects of industrialisation and the humancost of The Great Depression, this screening- part of Manchester Science Festival - willbe accompanied by the RNCM SymphonyOrchestra’s performance of Timothy Brock’sscore (restored from Chaplin’s original). Movingforward through cinematic history, MichaelNyman presents an evening of solo pianomusic and film (29 October). This unique eventwill feature music from films that the composerhas collaborated on with the likes of PeterGreenaway, Jane Campion and Neil Jordan,as well as music from a selection of the 70 filmsthat Nyman himself has made.(20 October), RNCM Saxophone Day (10November), RNCM Strings Day (24 November)and RNCM Keyboard Day (8 December).Pianists Alexandre Tharaud (24 October) andAndrás Schiff (19 November) perform solorecitals, and following her sell-out concert withPaul Lewis last December, Imogen Cooperreturns, this time joined by baritone WolfgangHolzmair on his final recital tour (13 November).And in the run up to Christmas, Joglaresacelebrate the festive season with an evening ofcarols, lullabies and dance tunes (3 December).The Talich (8 October) and Simón BolívarString Quartets (6 December) give recitals,alongside a strong programme from theManchester Chamber Concerts Society,featuring the Carducci Quartet (30 September),Alina Ibragimova and BartholomewLaFollette (28 October), Jerusalem Quartet(11 November) and Mark Padmore andJulius Drake (9 December). To complementour classical programme, we also havepublic masterclasses with violinist Midori (11October), trumpeter Alison Balsom (16 October)and world-renowned pianist Lang Lang (8November).You’ll find over 20 free lunchtime concerts thisAutumn, with regular performances on Mondaysand Thursdays and occasional Fridays too. Following a packed40th Anniversary year, the RNCM will soonembark on a 3 million project that will bringthe Concert Hall into the 21st century.After a full Autumn season of events, theConcert Hall will close in January 2014. It willthen re-open in September 2014, transformedinto a bigger, better and more comfortablevenue for audiences and performers alike. Thisredevelopment includes a new air conditioningand heating system, new lighting, state of theart technical facilities, an improved backstagearea and dressing rooms, new flooring, newseats and a balcony, increasing the ConcertHall capacity to 750. While they featured hot instrumentaltracks in their live sets and recordings, Dave’sforte in the duo was sensitive accompanimentto Martin’s vocals and guitar. On Rags, Reels &Airs the focus was solely on Dave and it finallygave him a chance to demonstrate his leadinginstrumental prowess. The result was a new eraof English instrumental folk music. When theyparted in 1969, Dave joined Fairport Conventionand his contribution to folk music has been welldocumented. With performancesby leading new music exponents Psappha, theRoyal Liverpool Philharmonic's Ensemble 10/10and the BBC Philharmonic, as well as concertsby exciting new groups such as House ofBedlam, Trio Atem and more, this is simply thelargest, most exciting festival of new British musicin 2013.There will be a special feature on the workof Edwin Roxburgh. Born and bought up inLiverpool, his compositions are renownedfor their scintillating textures and beautifullycrafted sound worlds.
