Your decision to join marks the first step towards becomingsuccessful business leaders. I have witnessed many of you reach new heights and accomplish outstandingfeats. Therefore, I hope that FBLA provides the opportunities and challenges you need so that you may trulyDare to Dream.In our tenth year, the Mater Academy High School FBLA Chapter was able to recruit 144 members. All ofyou have worked hard and pushed boundaries to help us achieve exceptional success. Mater Academy hasbeen recognized at the local, district and national levels. Last year, an outstanding 62 percent of competingmembers qualified to compete at the Florida State Leadership Conference and 71 percent of those whoattended the SLC qualified for the FBLA National Leadership Conference in California.You, the members, have collaborated towards reaching a remarkable amount of achievements throughoutthese 10 years that are definitely worth noting. I am filled with pride when I look back at this organization’shistory and see its support of the March of Dimes, its service to the American Cancer Society, and many othernon-profit organizations we have had the pleasure of working with. You are making a difference in the worldone day at time with your community service and dedication to the Future Business Leaders of America.I look forward to working with each and every single one of you this year to help accomplish your dreams.You are all crucial in making the Mater FBLA Chapter what it is today. 3CHAPTER PROFILEDARE TO DREAMThe Local Chapter Annual Business Report encapsulates all ofMater Academy Charter High School’s Future Business Leadersof America activities from April, 2017 to April, 2018. Featuredin this report is this year’s chapter theme Dare to Dream. As youjourney through these pages, we are certain that you will witnessthe unimaginable dedication that Mater Academy FBLA has to thecommunity, school and members.CHAPTER ORGANIZATIONFounded in 2008, the Mater Academy High School Chapter of FBLA is the first to be established in a charter schoolin Florida.In August of 2008, Adviser Tonya Alvarez joined the Mater Academy Charter High School faculty as the head ofthe Business Department. Mrs. Alvarez, an FBLA Wall of Fame inductee with over 30 years of participation in theorganization, has been crucial in leading the chapter over the past decade. Another strong leader, Daisy Benitez,used her 23 years of experience at Latin American Agri-Business Development and Investment Corporation to furtheradvance the FBLA chapter. Ronny Perez, a Microsoft Operating Systems Specialist, completed the Mater AcademyFBLA adviser team in 2010. The three Mater Academy FBLA advisers combined their experience in education, privatesectors, and technology to prepare students for competitive events and the business world.The Board of Directors’ hard work and the success of FBLA members in competitions has also spurred thedevelopment of the Business Department to include a greater variety of business classes to challenge students todream of a career in business.SIZE OF SCHOOL AND COMMUNITYMater Academy High School is a Title 1 public-charter highschool situated in the City of Hialeah Gardens, Florida. Itis part of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the largestpublic school district in the State of Florida and the fourthlargest in the United States.NUMBER OF MEMBERSThe Mater Academy Future Business Leaders ofAmerica Chapter has held the title of the largestorganization in the school for the past eight years. Thechapter currently has 144 active members, making itthe second largest chapter in District 25.95 %3%1.2 %0.8 %ASIANCAUCASIANAFRICAN AMERICANHISPANICMATER ACADEMYSTUDENT BODYAt the beginning of the 2017-2018school year, the student bodyenrollment at Mater AcademyCharter High totaled 3,440students. The ethnic distributionof the student body is displayedabove.

5Each-One-Reach-OneEach-One-Reach-One is an annualactivity to recruit new members withthe help of returning members.Each member of FBLA brings ina new member giving everyonethe opportunity to make a newfriend. This is a great activityfor the members to formalliances.RECRUITMENTACTIVITIESDARETO JOINSummer Jump StartBefore beginning the new school year,Mater Academy had an OrientationWeek for grades 6-12. This weekwas dedicated to welcome incomingstudents and their parents to theschool campus and attend informationalmeetings and tours of the campus. FBLAmembers volunteered to introduce thestudents and parents to FBLA-PBL.Social MediaThe members worked on promoting FBLAmembership through social media. ThroughTwitter and Instagram, FBLA has been ableto communicate with all its members whouse social media. Mater FBLA has also beenworking with helpful apps like Remind andGroupme to send out reminders for upcomingevent and meetings and to create group chatsfor all members to interact.Mater Happenings and Lions RoarThe school newspaper, Lions Roar, and theschool news program, Mater Happenings,have both been vital in spreading the wordabout FBLA to the Mater student body. Theprograms helped inform Mater students ofthe many benefits of joining FBLA.Scavenger HuntOne of the best memories the members have fromthe conference in Orlando, Florida, is participatingin the Scavenger hunt organized at Epcot Center. Thegroup had to help each other figure out the actionlisted on the scavenger hunt paper. The hunt andthe overall trip brought the group closer together asfriends.Club FairThe Club Fair is not only a great opportunity forstudents to explore the many clubs at Mater Academybut also an amazing way for FBLA to recruit newmembers. At the annual Mater Academy Club Fair,FBLA members set up a booth displaying brochures,scrapbooks and recruitment posters. The goal wasto inform students about how joining FBLA canenhance their high school experience.

6DARE TO LEADLEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENTChapter Officer ElectionsChapter officer elections are held every year after the State Leadership Conference. Allcandidates are required to submit a letter of intent, fill out an application and attend aninterview with the screening committee. At the interview, candidates are asked about theirexperiences and their future plans.Member Mentoring ProgramThe member mentoring program is designed for those members who are interested inapplying for officer positions and wish to become more familiar with the organization. Theprogram is based on upperclassmen members teaching other members everything aboutFBLA-PBL.Business AchievementEvery Thursday during lunch from early November to late February Mater FBLA hosts BAAworkshops. These workshops are held for all members interested in completing any, or all, offour levels of this FBLA-PBL program.Community Service AwardsThe FBLA-PBL Community Service Awards program is a key component in developingleadership outside of school. Mater FBLA hosts sessions to register members in communityservice events and to log their community service hours.Officer MeetingsThe officer team meets at least twice a month to prepare for general meetings and to planfuture events. Thanks to the officer team, general meetings are very informative.District OfficersMater FBLA was honored to have three members elected and appointed as District 25officers. Laura Acosta, district parliamentarian, Michael Lopez, district reporter, and DelvisDominguez, district treasurer, had the responsibility to attend meetings and seminarsthroughout the year to fulfill their district responsibilities.Chapter Project CommitteesThrough chapter project committees, the members are provided with the possibility ofhelping out the community, partnering with different businesses and participating inthe American enterprise project committee. All these possibilities developed members'leadership skills.

7Guest SpeakersMater FBLA invited professionals from wellknown tech companies, such as Microsoft,to present to students in business classes.Through these presentations, theylearned about the workplace in differentcompanies from the employee’s point ofview.Career DayThe chapter officers hosted local businessleaders at the annual career day.Professionals from different areas, suchas physicians, architects and governmentrepresentatives, were assigned to eachclassroom in the business wing to providestudents with information about theirrespective careers.Job ShadowingFBLA arranged multiple workshops totutor members on interview etiquette andproperly creating a resume. Afterwards,they were taken on a job shadowing fieldtrip and were given the opportubity towork at their preferred business for anentire day.DARE TO EXPLORECAREER EXPLORATIONAND PREPARATIONCollege TourAs students began to explore their choices forcollege, Mater FBLA members were given theopportunity to visit FBLA alumni at some of themost reputable colleges in the United States.These included Harvard University, Yale Universityand Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).College FairThis year Mater FBLA was invited to assist at theannual Mater Academy College Fair. Memberstook care of attendees and representatives whileinteracting with the representatives from theirpotential future school.Annual FBLA TripThe Washington, DC trip was perhaps one of thebest trips the Mater Academy FBLA Chapter hasever taken. Many members who had never evenbeen outside of Florida were able to tour theUnited States Capitol, visit the Lincoln Memorial,take pictures in front of the White House andeven gain some historical information about themonetary system at the U.S. Bureau of Engravingand Printing.

8DARE TO CONNECTBUSINESS PARTNERSHIPMiami MarlinsPublixTThe Miami Marlins donated 500 to helpsupport the chapter this school year along witht-shirts for the members. Billythe Marlin also made guestappearances at Mater FBLAcommunity service events.Publix Supermarketsis one of Mater FBLA’sproudest sponsors. Theyhave previously supportedthe chapter financially. This year Publixmade a generous donation of 200 to thechapter.Men's WearhouseAt competitions the Mater AcademyFBLA Chapter is known for its properand stylish attire. In order to upholdthis reputation, members contactedrepresentatives from Men’sWearhouse to make apresentation and teachthe members on the“dos and don’ts” ofprofessional businessattire.AcademicaOne of the nations most successfuleducationserviceorganizationspartnered with theMater FBLA Chapterand donated 500to sponsor anevent at the FLFBLA SLC.Regions BankThis year Regions Bankassisted the AmericanEnterprise team byhelping them teachother students aboutpersonal finance andinvestments. Employeescame to Mater and workedwith the members to helpthem train for competition. A visit was scheduled inJanuary to their Coral Gables branch to meet withexecutives to further learn more about the world offinance.Latin AmericanAgribusinessDevelopmentCorporationThe LAAD and Mater FBLApartner for multiple service events like the MiamiAutism Speaks event. The CEO of LAAD donated 2,500 to help send members to competition.

9Cake SnacksSlushie SalesBy selling Little Debbies, the members earned 3line of credit for each box they sold. The boxeswere sold at Mater Academy over a two monthperiod, where each member sold a minimum ofone box of Little Debbies.FBLA members set up a slushie concession standevery day during school lunch. They sold twoflavors: blueberry and cherry. All of the profitswere used to help the chapter cover travelingexpenses.FBLA Spirit ShirtsLetters to BusinessesMembers of the Mater Academy Chapterdesigned and sold FBLA spirit shirts. They weresold for 15; enough to cover the costs of thegoods sold and still gain profit to fund chapterevents in the future.Throughout multiple days, members wroteand sent letters to local businesses asking fordonations to help support the chapter. VickyBakery, famously known in Miami for theircatering and baked goods, donated 100 to thechapter.GROSSPROFIT 24,417. 82EXPENSES 22,810. 43DARE TO FUNDCHAPTERFUNDRAISINGThe Mater StoreIn order to demonstrate their entrepreneurship skills members had a chanceto sell uniforms andschool supplies at theschool store. FBLAwas rewarded with15% of the profitsearned from theitems sold as athank you forworking at the store.

10PUBLIC RELATIONS ACTIVITIESAND CHAPTER PUBLICITYProclamationAfter being contacted by Mater FBLA members, the mayor of the City of Hialeah Gardens issued aproclamation making the first week in February FBLA PBL Week.Mater AdvertisingThe school news, website and newspaper all publicize the chapter’s accomplishments andupcoming meetings. FBLA also used flyers, bulletin boards and the new Skool Live electronicposter screens on campus to publicize its major events.Florida FBLA-PBL CommunicatorIn order to keep the Florida State Chapter updated on the local activities Mater FBLAparticipated, the chapter reporter writes and sends press releases to the FloridaCommunicator.FBLA-PBL Tomorrow’s Business LeaderThe chapter sends press releases and pictures to the FBLA-PBL’s Future BusinessLeader newsletter in order to be featured in this newsletter.Miami MarlinsThe Miami Marlins sponsored multiple chapter events. They haveprovided the chapter with memorabilia to be used to raise funds. Byannouncing their sponsorship with Mater FBLA, the club was able togain publicity throughout the community.DARE TOPERCEIVEJohnson & WalesJohnson and Wales sent arepresentative to Mater Academy to speakto the chapter members. They aimed tohelp guide students in the right directionwhen it comes to choosing a majorthat’s right for them. This prestigiousuniversity gives scholarship to studentswho were member of FBLA at the timeof applying for financial aid, definitelyencouraging students to join FBLA.Keiser UniversityRepresentatives from KeiserUniversity made a presentationto three of Mater Academy'sbusiness classes about whatto take into considerationwhen choosing a majorfor college. FBLA membershelped the representativesset up to the classrooms for thepresentations.

11DARE TO CONTRIBUTESTATE AND NATIONAL PROJECTSPrematurity Awareness DayOn November 17, the members of FBLA wore purple shirts in honor of prematurity awarenessday.Informational WorkshopThe activities director and manager of the local March of Dimes office were invited to visit theschool. The members were given an informational presentation about the March of Dimesorganization as well as the history and the mission they are trying to achieve. This preparedstudents for when they volunteer again at different service events for the organization.March of Dimes Annual WalkMater FBLA volunteers every year at the March of Dimes annual walk. This year they were putin charge of all the school volunteers for the countty. They reported at 5:30 A.M. to set up,were responsible for the "fun-stops" and for the community hour distribution. The chapterraised 147.FundraisingMater FBLA is also a proud sponsor of the March of Dimes. Members fundraised and the chaptermade a donation the the organization. The donations went to support the organization in theirmedical endeavors to benefit premature babies and their mothers.ACTIVITIES TO BENEFITINDIVIDUALS ANDORGANIZATIONSThe Florida FBLA-PBL 2017-2018 State serviceproject is the American Cancer Society. The FBLAPBL 2017-2018 National service project is the Marchof Dimes.Annual WalkOn October 28, Mater FBLA attended the AmericanCancer Society Breast Cancer walk.DonationsAll of the FBLA members joined together anddonated more than 300 to the organization.

12DARE TO VOLUNTEEROTHER COMMUNITY SERVICEBlood DriveOpen HouseThe One Blood organization partneredup with Mater FBLA members in orderto promote a school-wide blood drive.Many of the members donated bloodin hopes of saving a life. Many pints ofblood were collectedAt the Mater Academy Open House,FBLA members volunteered by helpingparents find their way around thecampus. Members also handed outbrochures featuring the school toincoming students and their parents.Red Ribbon WeekAdopt-a-FamilyFBLA members organized workshopsand decorated bulletin boards aboutanti-bullying and being drug free.Through these activities, they were ableto spread this message to middle andhigh school students.During the holiday season, Mater FBLA“adopted a family.” This is when studentsfrom low income backgrounds write awish list, usually consisting of toys andschool supplies, and
