Miss Gurney-Smith had written and also received several cheery letters from PrivateJackson and in the last one he said the battalion were “all dandy”. His parents havereceived several messages of sympathy. Their eldest son, George, is with the HantsRegiment in India. He joined the army twelve years ago, rejoining at the outbreak ofhostilities.”District Times, Friday, April 3rd, 1915.War RecordJohn Murray Jackson sailed to Canada on the Dominion on the 12th March 1908 with a partyfrom the National Children’s Home and Orphanage, Edgworth. (40)The 1911 Canada Census puts John Jackson in London, Ontario, working as a labourer in afactory. It records that he is 20 years old and arrived in Canada in 1909.(41)When John signed his attestation papers on 31st August 1914, he gave his date of birth as13th August 1893 and his trade as Tailoring. However, according to the 1891 UK Census, hewas born in 1890.(1, 39)His records from the National Children’s Home in Hamilton also incorrectly record 13 thAugust 1893 as his birth date. When he arrived on the Dominion, his age is noted as 17which actually tallies with his birth date of 1890.(40)War RecordHe signed up at Valcartier and was part of the 1st Battalion (Western Ontario Regiment)(service number 6570). He said that his trade was Tailoring and that he had been in the 28thRegiment Militia for 18 months. He is 5’ 7 and half inches tall, with fresh complexion, blackhair and hazel eyes. His religion is noted as Presbyterian. His next of kin was Mrs. MaryJackson of Roman Hurst Stables, Churchwood Road, Bromley, Kent. This was later changedto George Jackson of 59 Park End, Bromley, Kent, England and 59 Park Road, but the letterswere returned and it is noted that the military authorities were unable to locate his Next ofKin as of 1926.(39)Circumstances of death records tell us he was killed in action in the trenches south east ofFleurbaix on the 12th March 1915; exactly 7 years to the day after he arrived in Canada.(39)His body was buried in the Y Farm Military Cemetery which is located in Touquet-desMages-Femmes near Bois Grenier, ¾ miles South of Bois Grenier, 3 miles south ofArmentieres, France. (40,15)He is recorded on the war memorials at the Methodist Church on Bolton Road, Edgworth, the war memorial in Bromley, Kent and at St. Mary’s Church, Bromley. Family History(1)The Jackson family is recorded in the 1891 census working in Bromley, Kent at Buller’sWood. The house was built in the middle of the 19th Century and was leased at the time toJohn Sanderson who had a large wool exporting company. He and his wife Agnes had alarge family. Sanderson is still a well known name in textiles today. The household had a large staff including Cook, kitchen maids, housemaids, Butler, Lady’sMaid, gardener, groom and George Jackson, the Coachman. The address of the Jacksonfamily is given as the Stable:George JacksonMaryGeorge WilliamJohn Murrayb:b:b:b:1852 in Rudham, Norfolk1859 in Knightsbridge, London18897 monthsIn 1901 George is still a coachman living with his family at Romanhurst, Beckenham. Thereare now two other children in the family:Albert EdwardAlice Mb: 1892b: 1893In 1911 George Jackson is shown as a widower, still at Romanhurst working as a Coachmanand living with Albert Edward, a porter. Albert is 18 years old. What had happened to thefamily is a bit of a mystery. In 1911 George says he is a widower, but the obituary noticerefers to “his parents” and when John signs his attestation papers in 1914 he names hismother as Next of Kin. There is no trace of Mary Ann or Alice M in the 1911 Census. However, Alice M Jackson appears in the 1939 Register working as a maid and living at 20Mason’s Hill, Bromley.(36)According to the British Home Child Advocacy and Research Association, John could havegone years without knowing his mother had died. It happened all the time. Organizationshad the mentality that the less the boys and girls knew and the less contact they had withtheir families, the better they would adjust to their ‘new and better lives’. Most childrenwere told their parents were dead. The following message was recorded on a Canadian forum, which shows that the militaryheritage lived on:“I am Anthony Clifford Murray Jackson, the great Nephew of John Murray Jacksonwho served with the 1st Canadian Division at Neuve Chapelle and was killed inaction on the 12th March 1915. He was one of the men who volunteered with theCEF. I have no idea if during the period before he came back to the UK inOctober 1914 he had any children, which makes me and my son the last of our line. His brother George William served in Mesopotamia with the Hampshires and thentransferred to the RASC and the Royal Signals. He then served in the RAF as an LACuntil 1945. He died in 1960. The Barlow World War One Project, 216 Bolton Road, Turton, Bolton, BL7 0AP, www.thebarlow.co.uk. My father, George Edward John Jackson served in the second lot with the RASCand the RAOC and had the distinction of being the youngest driving instructor NCOin the British Army. He served in the 8th Army under Wavell and subsequentlyMontgomery and was wounded at Alamein. He left the army in 1958 after 31years as a regular. He died in 1988.I served between 1968 and 1971 in the Royal Signals.” (18)Many of the boys sailed to Canada on the SS Dominion of the White Star Line The Barlow World War One Project, 216 Bolton Road, Turton, Bolton, BL7 0AP, www.thebarlow.co.uk.
