Neve Shalom BulletinVol. XXXIX - No. 10Serving the NorthernMiddlesex CountyJewish CommunityFROM THE RABBIJune 2012NEVE SHALOMBy Gerald ZelizerNursery School Inaugurates Zelizer PlaygroundAs the children in the Nursery Schooloften say, “Thanks for the treat.”I want to thank Martha Mack andthe parents of the Nursery School fortheir treat! It was a surprise and a moving honor that they decided to name theNursery School playground “The ZelizerPlayground.” Interfacing with the Nursery School has been a highlight of myservice to you all these years. I alwaysenjoy showing the kids the sanctuary, the inside of a Torah, explaining to themwhat a rabbi and hazzan do, and answering their lively questions. The banter in the hallway as they are lining upfor the bathroom and I pass them andthey call me by my name “Rav Yehuda”,is wonderful. That connection to them is thereason why I reallocated some moniesdedicated to my late parents, in order tosubsidize the new playground apparatusand anything else that the NurserySchool should need. Dayenu! - a smallplaque would have been fine! (The jokeis when future archeologists will un-cover synagogues of 2012 they will not deduce that the synagogues were constructedfrom bricks, but plaques.) Thanks to MarthaMack and the Nursery School parents fortheir abundant generosity! These monies were donated by myfather, Rabbi Nathan Zelizer, in memory ofmy mother, Florence Zelizer, when she died. Then when my father died, I supplementedthe fund and through the years various donations have come in from our members inhonor of different occasions. My father,Rabbi Nathan Zelizer, was the rabbi of acongregation in Columbus, Ohio for overforty years and then into his retirement andold age, the rabbi of various synagogues inFlorida which he found and turned over toyounger colleagues. Some in our congregation knew him from his visits and presenceon my pulpit. My mother Florence died at arelatively young age.In addition to the above, my enthusiasm over our Nursery School is multiplied:B. As a child, I attended a nursery schooland summer camp in synagogue of myfather,C. Most importantly, the newest frontier inJewish education is pre-school education. It is only in recent years that the Jewishdimension of pre-school education, hasbeen given proper attention and beenthought through by Jewish educators.Martha Mack, our Director, is a pioneerin giving a strong Jewish component to Nursery School education and she does an exemplary job at this.Todah rabah to Martha and the membersof the school committee who have honoredmy parents’ memory and my own tenure inCongregation Neve Shalom in this way. I ammoved and humbled by their gesture.Look for Rabbi Zelizer’s frequent cyberthoughts on the synagogue website:www.neveshalom.netA. Neve Shalom BulletinJune 2012Men’s ClubMinuteMembership MusingsBy Debbie Schildkraut, Membership Vice PresidentBy Matt Bonus, Men’s Club PresidentAt has been a terrific year together! We have been doing manyexciting things for Membership outreach. I want to thankMembership Committee members for their time and dedication, and remind everyone that this is an open committee, so pleasecome join us anytime and share your insights and ideas!s our summer approaches I would like to make all of youaware of some of the lasting things that our Men’s Club doesfor our synagogue. First and foremost we support our youth bydonating money to the Youth Fund for scholarships. We also support our local college by donating money to Rutgers Hillel. We arenot just about money. We take on synagogue projects when thereis a need for them. This spring and summer we have had all of theballroom High Holiday furniture refinished including the ark in theballroom. Special thanks goes to Jeff Weiss for spear heading thisproject. We are also planning to fix the book holders in our sanctuary and Beit Midrash. These have started to fall apart so we arerepairing them. In the past, we have bought vacuum cleaners, newdesks and rugs for the Hebrew school, and new book carrying cartsfor the synagogue. In order to continue doing these needed projects we needyour support. In this column I have asked for our members tocome out and support our programs, this time all I would like youto do is to continue to support our Men’s Club by checking theMen’s Club box when your dues form comes in the mail this summer. I know our dues continue to go up and some of our congregants have tried to offset this by not joining our Men’s club. Whilethis may save you a little money, it hurts our organization and prevents us from giving back to the synagogue with the projects aboveand more. To those who continue to support the Men’s Club I extend a gracious thank youThis month, one of our own, Jeff Schulman, is slated to become the next president of the Northern New Jersey Region of theFJMC (Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs). Our club is extremelyproud of Jeff and we know that he will bring his determination andspirit to our entire region. Here are some of the highlights from the past year: Our new Suggestion Box! Our new “Neve Now!” weekly email updates, with a freshand easy-to-read view of what’s happening at Neve Shalom each week. Neve Shalom BulletinJune 2012By Joshua Ullcasually opened my eyes from mynap and arose from my deep slumber. Surrounded by strangers and thesound of snoring, I had forgotten whereI was. It was a stormy flight from Eastern Europe, where my group had spentthe past two weeks intensively learningabout the Holocaust and Jewish history. The exit signs and floor lights dimlyilluminated the cabin as the rushingsound of compressed air poured outfrom the knob above my seat. Theplane was cold, dark, and asleep.Within minutes of my awakening afamiliar beep buzzed overhead and thepilot requested our preparation forarrival. The silence of the plane wasbroken as the wheels descended fromthe belly of the aircraft. Seatbeltsclicked, chairs pulled up, and tray tablesreturned to that familiar “upright position”. As we glided safely onto the runway my fellow passengers erupted insong. “Am Yisrael Chai, Am Yisrael Chai,Am Yisrael, Am Yisrael, Am YisraelChai!” we chanted. I could not seethose around me, but I heard theirmusic and felt their excitement. Lethargy turned into enthusiasm as ourvoices joined together in beautiful harmony. After five minutes of taxiing andanother ten of bottlenecking out theplane door, my group and I finally madeit into Ben Gurion Airport. Having neverbeen to Israel, I waited anxiously to feelthat “vibe” or those spiritual “chills”everyone seems to experience whenstepping foot in the Holy lLand.Strangely, I didn’t feel anything. It wasamazing to see every sign in Hebrew, towatch as natives spoke the language ofmy people, and to see the beautiful sunrise over this land which I have learnedso much about. But where was thatfeeling? Once we made it through security and boarded our bus we thoughtwe were going to the Fuchsberg Centerfor Conservative Judaism (The Conservative Movement’s home base in Israel)where we would be staying periodicallythroughout our four weeks in Israel. However, our staff announced that wewere making a pit stop.Immediately they swarmed thebus and covered our eyes with blindfolds. After driving for about twentyfive minutes, we came to a stop.Guided carefully down the steep stepsof the coach bus, we were told to placeour hands on the shoulders of the person in front of us. We cautiously followed directions about where to stepup, when to step down and which waywe should turn our bodies. Eventuallywe were told to stop talking and listen. After a brief moment of silence, permission was given for our blindfolds to beremoved. Above me I felt the blazingmorning sun blanket my bare neck inwarmth. Behind me I listened to thedaily rush of traffic and movement ofIsraeli life. And in front of me, I witnessed thousands of homes lining abeautiful landscape. There were cars, trees, buildings, schools, hospitals, grass, hills, and valleys. Hebrew School posterscame alive as I stood before a magnificent view on an overlook known as HaasPromenade. The Dome of the Rock glistened as the old city blended into anamazing scene. I stood there beside myforty three new best friends as wedavened Shacharit (the morning service)to start our day. That is how the most incrediblesummer of my life began. For fourweeks I embraced Judaism spiritually, culturally, and historically. I made lifelong friends, took spectacular pictures, and made unforgettable memories.Through music, hiking, and learning, Ibecame one with a land that had alwaysbeen so far away. As I reflect on mysummer on USY’s Eastern Europe IsraelPilgrimage, I can sincerely say it changedmy life. Everyone should have the opportunity to visit Israel with USY. Thereis nothing like spending Shabbat withyour closest friends overlooking the OldCity. Also

ing personality have won over many fans. This is not a Neve Shalom event but a community program to help bring quality Jewish music to Central New Jersey. Tick-ets are available online at www.MercazChoir.org, by phone at 732-422-6444 or 732-985-2778 or by sending a check payable to Makhelat Hamercaz
