PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAMEThe Professional Football Hallof Fame is located in Canton,Ohio, site of the organizationalmeeting on September 17,1920, from which the NationalFootball League evolved. TheNFL recognized Canton as theHall of Fame site on April 27,1961. Canton area individuals,foundations, and companiesdonated almost 400,000 incash and services to providefunds for the construction ofthe original two-building complex, which was dedicated onSeptember 7, 1963. Fourexpansions have occurred(1971, 1978, 1995, and thecurrent “Future 50” Expansion& Renovation Project) over theyears that have resulted in themuseum growing from its original 19,000 square feet totoday’s 117,000-square footfacility.The Hall of Fame’s currentexpansion & renovation projectis the largest in the museum’snearly 50-year history. Thetwo-year, 27 million projectwas coined the “Future 50”because it will be completed intime for the Hall of Fame’s 50thAnniversary in 2013 and willput the foundation in placefrom the next 50 years of success.The Hall has renovated fourof its six major exhibition galleries in recent years. TheLamar Hunt Super BowlGallery, featuring the SuperBowl Theater, opened in summer 2009. The Moments,Memories & MementosGallery and Pro Football TodayGallery were opened—one in2008 preceded by a brand newHall of Fame Gallery, home toenshrinees bronze busts, in2003. Other highlights of theHall include an extensivearchive and information centerand a large museum store.Throughout the years, the ProFootball Hall of Fame hasbecome an extremely populartourist attraction. The Hall ofFame will welcome its nine millionth visitor during the summer of 2012.New members of the ProFootball Hall of Fame are elected annually by a 44-memberSelection Committee, made upof media representatives fromevery league city, eleven atlarge representatives, and arepresentative of the Pro Football Writers of America.336Between four and seven newmembers are elected eachyear.
