Because we are still proud of thefive-year millions project in Sri Lanka we secured earlier this year. Under contractto the Sri Lanka Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources Management we havesince commenced working on the creation of a groundwater monitoring networkin different regions of this South Asian country. We will be telling you more aboutthis in this latest issue of The World of Royal Eijkelkamp. In addition, you will read about many other projects in which Royal Eijkelkampis involved, including the groundwater and source water monitoring network forEurope’s largest producer of soft drinks and fruit beverages, Refresco Group. Orour Swiss customer Fretus, which has been making full use of the new Drill’n CPTfor a tunnel construction project in Bern.Aside from interesting projects, many other good things have happened. Forexample, the Royal Honour bestowed on Fons Eijkelkamp. We were nominatedfor the family business of the year title and are still in the running for the WaterAlliance Innovation and Stimulating Price 2018. And if you always wanted to knowwhat the tricks of the blacksmith’s trade are, read about it here in The World ofRoyal Eijkelkamp.Enjoy reading!Huug EijkelkampThe tricksof rtner in EuropeanSmart miningproject14 16Sonisch boren, strong and compactColophonThe World of Royal Eijkelkamp Magazine isprepared with the greatest possible care. Byorder of the Sri Lankan Ministry of Irrigationand Water Resources Management, RoyalEijkelkamp will realise a groundwatermonitoring network in various regions of theSouth Asian country.‘Like many other countries, Sri Lanka also facesa variety of groundwater-related problems,’says Senior Project Manager Elsa Mulder-vanHeijst. ‘Groundwater is becoming scarcer, the demand for groundwater increases dueto population growth and a large variety ofusers causes fluctuations in level, quality andcomposition of the groundwater. In addition, there are different climate zones in Sri Lanka. In the dry zone, where residents are oftenaffected by chronic kidney disease, a very higharsenic and mercury content is found in mostdrinking water samples.’4‘The groundwater monitoring network to berealised, consisting of 150 monitoring sites, will soon provide the decision-makers of theMinistry with timely, reliable and accuratedata, based on which groundwater-relatedproblems can be monitored and managed.’Royal Eijkelkamp carries out the project in SriLanka on behalf of the Ministry of Irrigationand Water Resources Management (MIWRM).The MIWRM has the executive responsibilityfor the administration and managementof water sources. In other words, theMIWRM regulates the water sources andthe extraction of groundwater. Fretus AG Co-owner & CEOJohan de Ruiter‘We expect a brightfuture for the Drill’n CPT’Fretus AG, a Swiss-based buildingcontractor uses the Drill’n CPTfrom Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrillat a project in Bern, Switzerland.Co-owner and CEO Johan de Ruiterexplains why.‘We were already familiar withthe sonic drilling equipment fromEijkelkamp SonicSampDrill. Theadvantages of sonic drilling rigs arethe perfect core samples we get indifficult conditions, fast drilling, andbecause of the truck-mounted rig wecan relocate quickly from borehole toborehole at any place in Switzerland.‘The Swiss market for CPTu testingis relatively small because of itsgeological situation, so there arefewer contractors for CPTu testing. Forus as a drilling contractor we wouldnormally work with one of the Swiss-Fretus AGFretus AG is a Swiss-based buildingcontractor, specialised in soilinvestigation, foundation drilling, tunnel renovation and injections.Fretus AG focuses on specialised workwhich requires expert knowledgebased CPTu testing companies. Whenwe heard about the developmentof the Drill’n CPT from EijkelkampSonicSampDrill we were immediatelyenthusiastic. We immediately saw theinnovation of this product. With thisequipment we can utilise our ownCPTu without buying acomplete new rig, bycombining it with ourown rigs. Moreover, weare able to combinedrilling and CPT on thesame borehole, which isthe biggest innovation of this product.the drilling and CPT in one big project. At the same time we used the projectfor teaching the drilling operators howto work with this new tool, as well as tostart up the marketing for Drill’n CPT.‘The system works fast and is easyto handle.’ Johan deRuiter – Fretus AG,co-owner and CEO forthe Swiss market‘The system works fastand is easy to handle. For this project inBern we do a total of 1,400 metres ofCPT testing. The feedback from ourcustomers is very good. Because ofthe good response to the Drill’n CPTunit, the innovation that it bringsto the market and the overall goodsituation in the Swiss market,we expect a bright future for theDrill’n CPT.’‘The systemworks fastand is easyto handle.’‘We did not want to bring a newproduct on the Swiss market withouthaving the appropriate contracts toutilise it. As I said, the market is small. As soon as we were awarded thecontract in Wankdorf Bern, we orderedthe Drill’n CPT. Now we can combineand experience. Fretus AG obtainedthis knowledge together with theemployees over more than 25 years. For carrying out the work Fretus AGhas proven and highly specialisedequipment available such as a truck-based Sonic XL-Max drilling rig, whichis used for soil investigations and welldrilling.More information atwww.fretus.chFor the video, view our official Youtube channel: youtube.com/royaleijkelkamp67

Reindert StellingwerffPolicy Advisor Water Defences atthe Vallei and Veluwe Water BoardGroundwater dataessential for safetyDutch floodprotection worksThe Grebbedijk is a levee located between the municipalities of Wageningen and Rhenen in theNetherlands and protects 250,000 residents in the Gelderse Valley adjacent to the waters of theLower Rhine (Nederrijn). The Grebbedijk does not comply with the latest strict safety standards. In 2023 the more-than-5-kilometre-long levee will be reinforced as part of the Flood ProtectionProgramme, to ensure that the hinterland will remain safe if the water flowing through theRhine in the future increases due to climate change. The Water Board is extensively monitoringthe levee to collect as much groundwater data as possible for this purpose.‘Due to fast and effectiveaction on the part ofEijkelkamp Soil & Water,we were able to continuemeasuring during high waterconditions.’Reindert Stellingwerff – Vallei and Veluwe Water Board8Reindert Stellingwerff, Policy Advisor Water Defencesat the Vallei and Veluwe Water Board, is involved in theGrebbedijk reinforcement project. ‘We want to preparean optimal design for the Grebbedijk. This requires data. The installation of the measuring network on the leveeultimately enables us to better predict the requiredstrength of the newly to be designed levee in the eventof peak discharge.’‘As a Water Board, we manually measured groundwaterlevels near the levee for 20 years, but at a much lowerfrequency. The new measuring system Eijkelkamp Soil& Water installed, will provide us with much moreFor the video, view our official Youtube channel: youtube.com/royaleijkelkampdata. During the installation of the measuring array,we experienced peak discharge of the Rhine Riverin January 2018. Due to fast and effective action onthe part of Eijkelkamp Soil & Water, the measuringpoints outside the dike were extended, enablingus to continue measuring during the high waterconditions. It is not always possible to take elaboratemeasurements in the start-up phase of a project. But that happened here. We were lucky to be able toconduct measurements under high water conditionsright from the start.’‘Levee managers want to know as much aspossible about a levee. That makes measuring andmonitoring an essential activity. Even in areas thatdo not immediately require reinforcement. All leveemaintenance managers in the Netherlands are busywith the periodic Safety Assessment. By performingcalculations we assess the strength of our levees. Thisrequires data about the groundwater levels below thelevee and in sand layers located at greater depths. Andpreferably for the entire year. This helps us understandhow a dike behaves during high water conditions. Weaim to translate this data into extreme scenarios to testthe levee and monitor it in case that situation actuallyoccurs.’‘Our measuring array has been configured by EijkelkampSoil & Water for continue measuring and monitoringover the coming years. After all, as maintenancemanager, my goal is to have data series spanningseveral decades. The data we acquire is transmittedto the Dike Data Service Centre, a platform for storingdynamic measurement data within and around dikes. This platform enables us to store, analyse and reviewlarge quantities of dynamic measurement data, geographically as well as in the form of tables andgraphs. We developed the Dike Data Service Centretogether with five water boards and the DirectorateGeneral for Public Works and Water Management(Rijkswaterstaat). We are hoping that increasingly moredike managers will join this platform so that we willend up with safe, future-proof dikes throughout theNetherlands.’Flood Protection ProgrammeWorking together to restore levees that during thesafety assessment were declared non-compliant.That is the essence of the Flood ProtectionProgramme: a programme in which the nationaland regional water authorities collaborateintensively to protect the Netherlands fromflooding. The Programme is updated annuallyand developed for a period of six years at a time, with a longer-term twelve-year perspective. The Flood Protection Programme forms partof the Delta Programme. For more allei en Veluwe Water BoardThe Vallei en Veluwe Water Board is responsiblefor providing safe levees, clean and sufficientsurface water and treated wastewater in theregion bordered by the IJssel River, the LowerRhine River, the Utrecht Hill Ridge and theBordering Lakes. ‘With sonic weget better qualitysamples in ashorter time’Ulrich Geotechnik is a German engineering office for geotechnics. Luis Ulrich isthe Co Managing Director, studied civil engineering and geotechnics and managesall operational processes now. The company started with a well drilling company, founded by the grandfather of Luis. His father build up the engineering office in 1975and integrated the well drilling company five years later, in 1980.‘We first came across sonic in 2004; my fatherand my brother went to a demonstration inCanada. However we started drilling with sonicsix months ago. We also use the SingleWallCore Barrel on the site here. It is planned tobuild a deep excavation, next to a railway, for a three-level underground car park thatis all part of a hospital. But we also use theAquaLock and DoubleWall Core Barrel forsofter formations or alluvial formations. We carry out CPTs as well with the rig.’‘We are drilling glacial formations mainly inmoraine clay with stones and boulders. This isone of our projects with higher demands onthe soil sample quality, as the excavation pitand also the foundations are depending onthat. We go down to 18 metres and if we needmore information about the subsoil we advisegoing deeper. We drill nine boreholes to getan overview of the whole subsoil area.’The SmallRotoSonic ML in action.‘The sonic rigs are smaller and lighter compared to conventionaldrilling rigs, with the same depth performance’Luis Ulrich – Managing Director‘With sonic we get the better quality samplesin a shorter time. ‘Monitoring water ismonitoring the veryfoundation of ourbusiness’Refresco Group, Europe’s largest manufacturer of softdrinks and fruit juices, monitors the groundwater andspring water levels at its site in Hoensbroek via SmartSensoring developed by Eijkelkamp Soil & Water.‘Every 10 minutes, we receive the groundwater datawe need via telemetry,’ says QESH Manager MarcelSuntjens. ‘This is essential for us, because we wantto minimise the water factor.’‘Refresco Group’s position as a leadingcompany in our industry places a hugeresponsibility on us in terms of our products, employees and environment. We take thisresponsibility very seriously. That’sone reason why we established aMarcel SuntjensQESH (Quality, Environment, SafetyQESH Manager at Refrescoand Health) department consistingof 8 people which I manage.’‘At our site in Hoensbroek, wehave six springs, with depthsvarying from 100 to 130 metresbelow ground level, four of whichare recognised as spring water, ornatural mineral water, wells. We are obviouslyvery protective of these springs. After all, water is the very foundation of our business.Officially recognised springs must be protectedfrom above, below and from the side againstextraneous water intrusion. For this reasonwe constantly monitor the water level in thespring and analyse the water quality. We needto be sure that nothing potentially harmfulis occurring, such as a threat from above or12‘We need to be sure thatnothing potentially harmfulis occurring, such as a threatfrom above or belowto the integrity of our springs.’below to the integrity of our springs.’‘In the past, we used to gauge the water levelof the springs with a sounding device, actuallya tape, and record the readings manually. Now we take a more professional approach byemploying telemetry monitoring. Each spring isequipped with its own Diver Water Level Loggerand GDT-S Prime modem. One spring even hasmultiple Divers and a GDT-M for monitoringdifferent layers. These enable us to monitorspring water as well as groundwater.’‘Ultimately, our goal is to extract as littlewater as possible from the soil. This makesthe so-called water factor, or the volume ofwater needed to make one litre of lemonade,an important KPI for us. We aim to minimisethis water factor. One of the key factors in thisregard is the way in which we operate springs. So, ensuring we don’t open a spring too soonor close it too late, and that no tanks overflow.Another important consideration is how bestto extract water from the spring with the aidof a pump: frequency controlled or not? Weare currently in the process of implementingfrequency-controlled pumps, butmonitoring with Diver Water LevelLoggers will give us a better pictureof what is happening underground, which will ultimately enable us tomake optimum use of the availablewater. Why did we choose EijkelkampSoil & Water?’ I think there is onlyone firm with the experience andexpertise to do this effectively. Inthe past, we’ve used equipmentsupplied by Eijkelkamp. But theintroduction of new technologies, such as the GDT-S Prime modem, forexample, has made everything a loteasier nowadays. This feeds all therequired data on what is happeningdirectly to the desktop.‘Besides saving several man hoursper spring per month, we nowhave access to far more data andthat really is key for us. The datawe previously received just oncea fortnight is now fed to us everyten minutes. This allows us to seeimmediately what happens in thespring when a pump is switchedon or off and whether there isinteraction between differentsprings. Fortunately, the latter isnot the case.’‘We now have accessto far more data, and that really is keyfor us.’Refresco GroupRefresco Group is Europe’s largest manufacturer ofThe head office of Refresco Benelux is located insoft drinks and fruit juices.
