Howard Community College Division of Continuing Education & Workforce DevelopmentCLASSROOM-BASED MEDICAL CODING & BILLING CLASSESFall 2018 (August – December) and Winter/Spring 2019 (January – June)All classroom-based courses will be held at the HCC Gateway Campus and include a total of 613 instructional hours(approximately 10 months) to prepare students for success in the industry as well as for eligibility to take the Certified CodingAssociate (CCA) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification exam given by the American Academy of ProfessionalCoders (AAPC). Classroom based courses include: Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Pathophysiology for Medical Billers/Coders, Medical Insurance Billing A-Z Plus, Introduction to ICD-10-CM Medical Coding, Advanced Facility Medical Coding, Introduction to CPT & HCPCS Medical Coding, Advanced Physician Medical Coding, and Advanced Facility/Outpatient Medical CodingAll courses (see descriptions below) are held in sequence order during fall, winter, and spring terms except Anatomy andPathophysiology for Medical Billers/Coders and Medical Insurance Billing A-Z Plus. The Anatomy and Pathophysiology forMedical Billers/Coders and Medical Insurance Billing A-Z Plus are offered to be taken simultaneously. All courses are held onMon & Wed evenings with several Saturday classes per course except the Medical Insurance Billing A-Z Plus, which is heldon Tue & Thu evenings with no Saturday classes. Students who successfully complete all classroom based courses areprepared for the industry and are eligible to take the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC)certification exam given by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).Successful students who complete the Medical Insurance Billing A-Z Plus course are prepared to seek employment as amedical biller while taking the coding courses and to pursue stackable credentials by taking the Certified Professional BillerCertification exam (CPC) given by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), the National MedicalAdministrative Assistant Certification (CMAA) exam, and the Electronic Health Records Certification (CEHRS) exam givenby the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).Financial AssistanceFinancial aid for noncredit classes: ial-aid.html (please note, noncredit financial aid applications must besubmitted at least two weeks prior to the start date of a class). You will gain real-world experience with simulated practice as you manually and electronically prepare insuranceclaims. No previous medical experience necessary.
