The Executive BranchThe President of the United States isthe leader of the executive branch.The President’s duties are to: Enforce federal laws and recommendnew ones Serve as commander in chief of theArmed Forces – Army, Navy,Air Force and Marines Meet with leaders of other countriesLesson 2

The President’s CabinetCarrying out the laws of the United States is a big job!To help, the President has a Vice President and departmentheads who advise the President on issues and help carry outpolicies.The Vice President serves as President of the Senate andbecomes President if the President can no longer do the job.Leaders in each department arecalled Secretaries.These Secretaries makeup the President’s Cabinet.Lesson 2

Cabinet DepartmentsThe Department of Education provides money for public schools andloans to help people attend college . It makes sure there is equalaccess to education and promotes educational excellencethroughout the nation.The Department of Transportation is in charge of highwayplanning and construction; car, truck, air, and railroad safety;and the safety of waterways, ports, highways, and oil and gaspipelines.The Department of Agriculture works to support farmers and todevelop and expand markets abroad for agricultural products.It protects quality in the daily food supply.The Department of the Treasury collects taxes, recommendsways to help the economy, and manufactures coins and money.Lesson 2

Cabinet DepartmentsThe Department of Defense is responsible for providing themilitary forces needed to protect the security of our country.The Department of Health and Human Services looks afterpeople's health and provides services that includeconducting medical research, preventing diseases, andassuring the safety of food and drugs.The Department of Energy researches and develops energysystems that are friendly to the environment, but are not tooexpensive.Other Departments in the President’s Cabinet are: Commerce, Justice, Labor, Housingand Urban Development, Interior, Veteran Affairs, Homeland Security, and State.Lesson 2

The Judicial BranchThe judicial branch of government is made up ofthe court system. The Supreme Court is thehighest court in the land. It was established by theConstitution. Other federal courts were establishedby Congress.Courts decide arguments about: The meaning of laws How laws are applied Whether laws break the rulesof the ConstitutionLesson 2

The Supreme CourtThe Supreme Court hears cases that have made theirway through the lower court system. There are more than 7,500 cases sent to the SupremeCourt each year. Only about 80 to 100 cases are actually accepted. There are nine Supreme Court Justices, one of thenine being the Chief Justice. The Justices of the Supreme Court areappointed by the President, approvedby the Senate, and can serve for life.Lesson 2

The Legislative BranchHouseofRepresentativesSenateThe U.S. Congress is made up of two parts, the House ofRepresentatives and the Senate. Congress meets at the U.S.Capitol in Washington, D.C. Its primary duty is to write,debate, and pass bills, which are then passed on to thePresident for approval to become laws.Lesson 2

The House of RepresentativesIn the House, representation is based on thenumber of people living in each state.Therefore, states with larger populations havemore representation than states with smallerpopulations.
