3. . . SINCE 1922THE POTENTATE’SMESSAGEWe Get By with A Little Help From Our FriendsNobles and Ladies,The above are words from a great song by the Beatles. Just one of the songsplayed by the tribute band “Fab Four” as entertainment at this year’s Imperial Sessionbut one that was very appropriate as we put together the circus performances for2017. Barry “Full House” Trasacco and Lady Linda outdid themselves with nine performances at five different sites. The “help from our friends” came in the form of donated dumpsters, cut-rates on porta-potty rentals, and circus sites. At the last minutein Amsterdam we found that our usual site had some ongoing construction work requiring a last minute relocation. With all the posters and tickets printed we had to notify people of the change. RR Donnelly Construction of Mechanicville loaned us theuse of an electronic sign that we could put at the entrance of the old site directingpeople to the new site on Route 29. Early setup of the sign by the crew of High Priestand Prophet Dan Saville resulted in the first of four absolute sell-outs of our circusperformances this year. It’s humbling to be a Shriner when people and businessesreach out to help us carry out our mission to help kids. The most pleasant surprise of the Imperial Session was the announcement ofEmily Mellish as one of the new patient ambassadors of Shriners Hospitals for Children. Many of you have met Emily as she attended many NYOSA meetings and Temple functions. She has been a patient at the Erie Hospital since her birth 11 yearsago. As the first dancer on the floor to the Fab Four she showed that there is no limitto her energy and attitude despite her many surgeries over the years. Her effort togive back to the Shriners by making bracelets for her “Beads for Needs” Foundationhas raised nearly 80,000 for Shriners Hospitals. Our first choice for the Temple Dinner at Imperial, reserved over a year ago, wasstill under renovation from last year’s hurricane. Once again, our friends stepped into help, as Potentate Wayne Towne of Ziyara, was trying to put together a NYOSAgroup dinner at their hotel. So Oriental dined with Ziyara, Mecca, Media, and Ismailiaat the top the Shores Hotel. A spectacular view and a great opportunity to socializewith the other Shriners and their ladies from the other NYOSA Temples. The 143rd Imperial Session in Daytona has come and gone and I’m happy toreport that Shriners Hospitals for Children and our philanthropy is well managed andfinancially stable thanks to the dedication of the many people who support our greatcause. Among the items voted upon at the session was the change of the year ofShriners International to a fiscal year that corresponds to the election of the Imperialline in July of each year. This only makes sense as the Imperial Potentate has a yearand budget that clearly is his responsibility from his election in July to the next June, just prior to the election of the next Potentate. All Temples and the hospital systemwill continue to operate on a calendar year.New Imperial Potentate Gary J. Bergenske can be congratulated for putting ona great Imperial Session that ran like clockwork. Quite a feat considering that we lostImperial Sir and Recorder Jack Jones just prior to the session. The transportationsystem was better than anyone anticipated and our chosen hotel was one to the firststops on the route. The one floor setup of the Marketplace and Convention Centerreminded one of the Indianapolis session as opposed to the daunting stairways ofTampa. Somehow I never made out to the food trucks for one of the lobster rolls, something I’ll be sure to correct next year.Imperial Session for 2021 was announced by newly elected Imperial High Priestand Prophet Jim Smith as a return to Houston, Texas. Imperial Sir Smith is the onewho emphasized to me the two F’s, “Fun and Fraternity” which is on my pin, and his(Continued from page 4)DON Supreme QueenVisits Cyrene TempleFor the first time in 25 years, Daughters ofthe Nile has a Supreme Queen (equivalent tothe Imperial Potentate) from New York State! Her Supreme Majesty Karen L. Keuther,Supreme Queen ofthe Supreme TempleDaughters of theNile, was installed atSupreme Session onJune 15, 2017. Sheis a member of AthorTemple No. 19, Buffalo, NY.During her year asSupremeQueen, she visits all 137 Niletemples in the U.S. and Canada, as well as all22 Shriners Hospitals for Children . On Monday, July 24, 2017, her travels brought her toCyrene Temple No. 18, Albany/Troy, NY.Our afternoon session was held at the Oriental Shrine Center. Total attendance wasclose to 75 Princesses! Included were twopast Supreme Queens: PSQ Betty Nohle,1992, Zama Temple No.14, Rochester, NY,and Supreme Princess Recorder and PSQEleanor Green, 2007, Ahlem Temple No. 84,Springfield, MA.Attendees came from all over New YorkState, several New England states, and as faras Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. There wereat least five Supreme Temple appointive officers (usually only one or two), and many others with Supreme appointments.Members from several Nile temples helpedto fill the offices for the Ceremonial. Their helpis greatly appreciated.Though there was not a new member to initiate, Princess Joanne Dyer portrayed the Exemplifying Candidate. We hope to holdanother ceremonial soon to initiate a newmember.Following the Session, a banquet to honorthe Supreme Queen was held at the ColonieElks Club. There were about 55 attendees, including nobles from Cyprus No. 5, OrientalNo. 7, and Ziyara No. 11. Present for the socialhour only, were two representatives of Hudson Valley No. 43, International Order of Rainbow for Girls. One gave a short talk beforedinner was served.Cyrene Queen SueAnn Nicholson introduced Cyrene’s officers. She was accompanied by Ill. Sir Thomas K. Nicholson, PP.Because of our location, Cyrene Templehas ties to two Shrine Centers, Cyprus in Albany and Oriental in Troy. Ill. Sir AnthonyPrizzia (his Lady was unable to attend) ofCyprus and Ill.
