Todd WeedmanLast month Al Kader Temple was proudto host the winter business meeting ofthe Pacific Northwest Shrine Association(PNSA). We were honored to have ourImperial Potentate, Jim Cain, ImperialOfficers Kenny Craven and Ed Stolze, and over 80 delegates from the 18associate temples in attendance. We hada dignitary visitation from the HonorableTim Knapp, Mayor of Wilsonville, whospoke of our reciprocal relationship withthe City, and a trio of flute players fromWilsonville High School who providedaccompanying music for our openingceremonies. Informative and heart-feltwords from Dereesa Reid, Administratorof the Portland Shrine Hospital, alongwith Davene Dietzler and Kathy Park, who masterfully directs PortlandShrine Hospital Business Development. We also welcomed KayleighPierson, Miss International Job’s Daughter, a delightful young lady that weare pleased to say is from Salem and represents Oregon very well. The usual topics of membership, fundraising and leadership wereadequately discussed, but the most pertinent was the future of the ShrineHospital System. Advances in medicine and medical treatments requirefewer overnight stays. In the last 10 years the percentage of outpatientshas jumped from 60 to more than 80 percent. A result of this is thatmany, if not most, of our 22 Shrine hospitals do not meet the minimalaccreditation criteria of a daily average of two patients, staying two or morenights. No question that fewer surgeries and less time away from family isa win-win for our patients and hospitals, but such a rapid change has leftus with a soon-to-be outdated hospital system. These issues and concernsnot unique to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Rising costs are driving U.S.medical reform by all service providers, with one response being the birthand brisk growth of care clinics and telemedicine - where most needs areconveniently addressed locally, or at home at a reduced cost. The hard fact is that our hospital system is not cost-efficient, and isdrawing from the endowment at a rate that could deplete funds within 15years. The choice is to reformat our hospital system or continue as we areand suffer an ever increasing, agonizing financial bleed. We know changewill take much deliberation and that the medical landscape will continueto be dynamic while we ourselves are in flux. It is likely that the ShrineHospital system will restructure into a clinic network, supported by asfew as 6 strategically located hospitals. This model would cost-effectivelyprovide care to more children and potentially be exported internationally. The process will take 10-15 years to implement, and be painful for thoseShrine Centers whose local hospital is replaced by one or more clinics. The Portland Shrine Hospital is well run, strategically located, conductsadvanced research, and provides prosthetics to 5 other Shrine hospitals, but we have no guarantees of what restructuring will ultimately dictate. Letus remember our goal is to help Children, not to own buildings. And whilecontinued on page 122Al Kader Oasis - March 2019

We pray prior to our mealsand meetings at Lodge and Shrine.I am always impressed and inspired when I entera Lodge or other location where the famous, butcontroversial painting of George Washingtonkneeling in the snow at Valley Forge by his horsepraying for his country and his troops. Washingtonwas raised a Master Mason at age 21 and practicedits precepts as he later became a General, Presidentand Master of his Lodge. How do we pray? There are ritualistic prayers inLodge and some suggested prayers for variousoccasions in the Oregon Standard Manual. In ShrineProtocol there are guidelines that our prayersbe non-denominational as we embrace people ofall religions. In the Shrine Club/Unit Operationsmanual about page 8 there is a suggested prayer.Prayers can also be extemporaneous and from theheart. In Shrine we usually invoke the name of God,ask for the help and blessing of our Fraternity andour Philanthropy (our hospitals and the children). Our prayers do not have to be complicated. Are prayers effective? People of the clergy andmedical profession will tell you that prayer can behelpful to healing physically as well as mentally.Churches and other organizations have prayerchains or lists that people will tell you are helpful.Practice prayer as part of your life. If it is part ofyour fraternity and practiced by the Father of OurCountry, it might be a helpful part of your spirituallife as well.“Prayer is more than words. It’s listening, seeing andfeeling.”Norman Vincent Peale, Shrine/MasonWe hope that you participate in your Lodge andtake advantage of all the activities at Al Kader thismonth. Why do we only rest in peace? Why don’t we live inpeace too?Al Kader Oasis - March 20193

UnfortunatelyPresident Bill’s lady took a bad tumble outside therestaurant and had to be rushed to medical care. And we were missing a Treasurer who was onvacation. So we postponed the installation, again, and Vice President Bob Strong took over themeeting and got us through the evening in goodstead. Thanks to Potentate Illustrious Sir ToddWeedman and his lady Marti for joining us for theeveningThe Peppermill Restaurant did a little shufflingwith our table arrangements but it all worked justthe same. For the dinner we all ordered off thestandard menu instead of the brief menu like therestaurant used to prepare for us. We used to referto it as the “old folks menu” with lighter fares andsmaller servings. Oh well, times are a changing.I have nothing on my agenda for this month’smeeting in the way of entertainment orenlightenment. I know Rod gave me someinformation months ago and I have not heard fromPresident Bill so I guess we will just wing it againthis month. Let’s just all go to the next meeting ofthe Tualatin Valley Shrine Club and be surprisedwith whatever comes up. And, don’t forget to bringthose bottles and cans to the next meeting for ourrecycling fund raiser. The next business meeting and dinner will be atthe Peppermill Restaurant on Wednesday, March20, 2019 at 1800 but come early for social activity. If anything changes between now and then I’ll letyou know by mail, email or phone call.Happy St. Patrick’s Day and don’t forget to set allyour clocks on March 10th for Daylight SavingsTime. My email address is still richardsonherb@comcast.net and my home phone is 503-691-6711.10Al Kader Oasis - March 2019Desert Patrolby Noble Gib Thonstad“March” right in, parade season is almost upon us.The Dalles is a little over a month away and thereis a lot to do to get ready. However, first orderof business must be rumor control. Contrary tosupposed ‘popular’ belief, a group led by a bunchof “Clowns” started a vicious rumor about changesin the warehouse. You can rest assured IS Toddand his group of dizzy desert partners (not theritualist) say there will be no WALL. Not even aspeed bump, a curb, or any protrusion extendingupward from the floor. That’s that. Hey Cyclowns, maybe you can hang a curtain from the rafters tohide behind. On to more important stuff! The Desert Patrolhas passed on the Heppner parade in March to domaintenance and work on the ATVs. The first ofmany work parties has been called for on March2nd at 9 am. We will also be unloading the bigtrailer in preparation of selling it. This will meanthat we will need to clear some warehouse floorspace for ATV storage.Anyone interested in riding an ATV in the paradesthis year, please come on down and join us. Weare going to be working the next few monthspreparing for, among other things, Imperialsession in Nashville. Due to 10 bikes going toImperial it is really necessary that we get allthe ATVs in good working order to be able toparticipate in Tillamook and also the 4th of July, either Canby or Molalla parades. We will also needriders for these ATV’s.We have asked to help with cleaning up the ShrineCenter and disposing of those things we no longerhave a use for and are no longer using. We do havesome cabinets that need looking into. I am notsure about the garage (Warehouse). We will haveto scour the area. I am sure there are items layingaround that require some attention on our part. The Ceremonial will be at the Scottish Rite thisspring which will present a few problems withshowing off our unit. Be thinking about what wecan do to emphasize the importance of joiningour active group. Maybe we should misspell ourname and serve the new Nobles cake and pieand cookies. Ah, oh well, your right, leave thedeception to others.Keeping the rubber on the road, the pedal to themetal and one foot on the brake.
