Options BookletMarch 2020Dear Parent/carerRE: Options Process - Year 10Your child is about to make their choice of optional subjects to study during KS4. In order to supportthem in making these choices, subject teachers for each subject are available during our OptionsEvening on Thursday 5 March. There is also additional information in this booklet about each of thesubjects that we offer at GCSE and BTEC.We aim to ensure that the information and guidance provided will support your child through theoptions process. It is important that each student, with support from their parents/carers,understands their own strengths and weaknesses so that they can optimise their chances of success.We recommend that students select courses that they enjoy and that they may wish to study whenthey continue their education at sixth form, and that would also help them move onto a career theyhave aspirations for.Students will study 3 option choices over Year 10 and Year 11 along with all of the core subjects.Students will choose either GCSE History or GCSE Geography; they will then make two further ‘open’choices. These open choices will be completed in one year, one at the end of Year 10 and one at theend of Year 11. The list of subjects they can choose from is shown overleaf. English Language – Core SubjectAll students in Year 10 and 11 study AQA GCSE EnglishLanguage alongside GCSE English Literature. Anoverview of the units of assessment is below. Thiscourse is 100% examination and is assessed at the endof the two-year course. Paper 1 is an exploration increative reading and writing. Paper 2 is an examinationof the writers’ viewpoints and perspectives. English Literature – Core SubjectThe aim of the GCSE English Literature course in Year 10and 11 is to continue to inspire, challenge and motivateevery student to read high quality, rigorous texts, nomatter what their level of ability. All students in Year 10and 11 study GCSE English Literature alongside GCSEEnglish Language.An overview of the units of assessment for AQA GCSEEnglish Literature is detailed below. This course is 100%examination and is assessed at the end of the two-yearcourse. Science – Core SubjectGCSE Sciences enable students to access Science at anylevel, whether they intend to study Science further ornot.Most students will gain two GCSEs in Science. Somestudents will be accelerated through the CombinedScience course in Year 10. French – Core SubjectStudents are all currently studying French in Year 9 andwill continue to study French in Year 10 as a two-yearcourse. They will study AQA French or follow a coursewith particular emphasis on spoken French. 3D Art and DesignThe course is a three-dimensional art and design coursewhich will cover making and sculpting in a variety ofmedia. You will do two projects to build up your skills inmaking; you can work in clay, card, wire, recycledmaterials and plaster.GCSE Art students are encouraged to make theirresearch personal, imaginative and exciting in order topromote independent work.What will be studied?You will study artists’ work for inspiration and learn todevelop ideas using a wide variety of media, thenproducing a final piece which shows an informedresponse. The two coursework projects’ research ispresented in sketch books and this is worth 60% of yourcourse. Art and Design PhotographyThis is a course where students will explorePhotography through a creative approach. They willhave the opportunity to study a variety of historical andcontemporary artists’ and photographers’ work. Thiswill inspire and develop their responses into individualoutcomes.Students will be required to make their researchpersonal, completing photoshoots in their own timeand demonstrating independence.What will be studied?Students will be taught how to use Adobe Photoshopand more traditional art media alongside use of thecamera.
