The Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia University, through itsGlobal Health Program, conducts an annual certificate-granting Clinical Training Course inTropical Medicine and Traveler’s Health, accredited by the American Society of TropicalMedicine and Hygiene (ASTMH).OBJECTIVESFollowing this conference, participants should be able to: Identify major global issues in tropical public health such as Women’sHealth, Emerging Infectious Diseases, Vector Control, Water andSanitation, and Famine and Refugees. Discuss clinical tropical diseasesfrequently encountered in the developing world. Diagnose and treat these diseases Implement field-based preventive and control measures for majorcommunicable/infectious diseases Manage travel related illnessesDESCRIPTIONThis course is designed to provide training in tropical medicine and global public healthissues through a multidisciplinary approach to disease. Traveler’s health is covered in detail aswell. The course is divided into four modules: Module 1 – Introduction to Global PublicHealth; Module 2 – Clinical Practice in the Tropics and Traveler’s Health;Module 3 – Medical Parasitology and Simulations; and Module 4 – Infectious Diseases.Modules 1, 2 and 4 are offered only online. Module 3 must be taken in person (on site). Theduration of each module taken in person is two weeks. Participants who take Modules 1, 2 and4 online will have until March 1, 2020 to complete the module(s). Participants may take one ormore modules in a given year and in any order.

Lectures, laboratory components and detailed case studies will examine specific tropicaldiseases and stress diagnosis, treatment and implementation of preventive and control measures.The course will also include hands-on experience in ultrasound, eye exams, suturing, andneonatal resuscitation.All elements of ASTMH curriculum are covered, as well as practical aspects of providingquality health care in resource-limited settings.The course will be open to family medicine practitioners, general internists, internalmedicine subspecialists, pediatricians, emergency medicine physicians,obstetricians/gynecologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, dentists, nurses, public healthprofessionals, physician assistants, and to anyone interested in making a career change. Thiscourse is divided into 3 two-week modules in order to accommodate busy schedules and allowmore flexibility for health care professionals to take the course. The course content ofapproximately 301 hours of didactic contact time is as follows:1)Didactic lectures, seminars, and small-group discussions in infectious diseasesand tropical medicine, and tropical public health [240 hours];2)Laboratory demonstrations and practicums in microbiology(eg. bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, mycobacteriology, virology),hematology, serology, dermatology, surgery, radiology, primary health caretechniques, and computers [52 hours];3)Flexible, supervised, educational training modules in: International travelmedicine; computer modeling in epidemiologic field methods (eg. EPI Info,biostatistics, etc.) and infectious diseases and parasitology case studies (bothslide- and video-based) [9 hours].The WVU Global Health Program can assist participants in arranging two-month clinicalfield experiences in tropical medicine for those who have not worked overseas previously. Thecourse focuses on the imparting of essential skills and competencies in clinical tropical medicine,laboratory skills in a low-technology setting, epidemiology and disease control, and traveler’shealth. The didactic portion of the ASTMH course is conducted by both full-time and clinical

faculty at WVU and by visiting faculty from several American schools of medicine and publichealth.Lecturers and demonstrators have had significant overseas experiences in clinicaltropical medicine and/or tropical public health, and/or are nationally or internationallyrecognized in their field of expertise.Course materials: All course materials, including lectures, class notes, quizzes, exams,handouts, presentations and other materials provided to our participants are protected intellectualproperty. Participants who have registered for a module will have access to the lectureselectronically through SOLE/Camtasia free of charge for five years as long as they log on at leastonce a year. After five years, there will be a small fee to access the updated lectures onSOLE/Camtasia. For example, if a participant is registered for Module 1 they will have access toany future updated lectures for Module 1 (etc.). If a participant does not log in toSOLE/Camtasia within a year their account becomes inactive. If this happens, they can contactthe Program Coordinator or IT to reactivate their account.

Online Course: The American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTMH) hasapproved and accredited Modules 1, 2 and 4 to be offered online. Module 3, because of its manyhands-on labs, cannot be offered online.
