Twi 1IntroductionTwi, also called “Ashanti Twi,” is spoken in Ghanaby about 15 million people. It is one of three mutuallyintelligible dialects of the Akan language. This course was originally published in a limitededition by Dr. Paul Pimsleur for use by the PeaceCorps and the U.S. Department of Education. After completing the ten lessons, you will havea highly practical 125-word vocabulary that wasselected to help you meet many situations you willencounter in Ghana. You will have a rudimentarycommand of Twi grammar, and you will know how toread i.e., sound out written Twi. With this knowledge, you will be able to obtain food and lodging, makepurchases, and engage in simple social contacts. Ofcourse, 125 words will not make you a fluent speakerof Twi, but it will establish you as a person who hasmade an effort to meet his foreign hosts halfway. The recorded portion of the reading materialsfor this course will be found at the end of eachlesson. You can do the readings as it is mostconvenient for you. They can be done individuallywith each respective or at a more appropriate timeafterwards. Instructions on how to proceed withthe readings are contained in the audio portion ofthe course.
