State of the ArtsMonthly E-Newsletter ofFairbanks Arts AssociationVolume 19, Issue 10Message from the DirectorDear Friends,I hope this extended fall season is finding you well! Before launching into some FairbanksArts news, I want to take one more opportunity to thank folks who came from near and farto join us at last month's INTER:CONNECT 2018 Alaska Arts Convergence conference and atthe First Friday Downtown Block Party! It was an honor for us to serve as co-host for AlaskaState Council on the Arts' biennial conference and to partner with Downtown Association ofFairbanks on the First Friday Block Party - we relish opportunities to bring people togetherthrough the arts and to foster spaces where creative exchange can take place. One more big thank you to the partners and sponsors of INTER:CONNECT and the First Friday Downtown Block Party!Through contributions of funds, time, and services, these foundations, organizations, and businesses choose to createmore vibrant, healthy communities through the arts and we are so grateful for this investment.Thank you to our INTER:CONNECT contributors!Rasmuson FoundationThe CIRI FoundationAtwood FoundationMt. Photo by Todd Paris/ParisPhotographics.For the last couple of years I have worked with ASCA's Arts EducationAdvisory Committee (AEAC), a group comprised of arts and culturaladvocates, educators, and community leaders from across Alaska. This group has largely focused on how teaching and learning in andthrough the arts and cultures in Alaska support individual, community, and statewide efforts to grow healthy, innovative, andresilient communities. In early 2018, these conversations manifestedas the "How Are You Creative?" (HAYC) movement, which seeks to weave networks, align policies, and increaseinvolvement in Alaska arts and cultures. So, how does this huge topic get distilled into such a simple question? Thequestion comes out of the necessity for shared language, conversation, and concepts when it comes to arts andculture that we can all dive into. While everyone may not identify as an artist or readily recognize the ways in whichtheir life intersects with the arts, most folks can get behind the idea that they are creative in one way or another.During the INTER:CONNECT conference, the AEAC was pleased to offer a soft launch of the HAYCwebsite, howareyoucreative.org, the first public presence of our efforts. While this site is young and a work inprogress, I invite you to check it out, sign up for the HAYC e-mail list, and participate by sharing how YOU arecreative!Introducing the newest Fairbanks Arts team member!Programs and Communication Coordinator - Nike BahrNike was born and raised in Germany, but her love for the English languagequickly showed when she started learning it in 5th grade! Always having dreamtabout a chance to spend time in the U.S., she decided to get a B.A. in Englishand American Studies from the University of Mannheim in the south of Germany.During an exchange semester at UAF in the fall of 2014 Nike fell in love withFairbanks and decided she wanted to try the real Alaskan life eventually. Afterfinishing her degree in 2016, she took a chance, packed her bags and movedhalfway around the world to get her M.A. in Professional Communication fromUAF and to teach public speaking.Although she is not a proclaimed artist, her creative side shows in her love forvisual organization. This love led her to explore graphic design and to developskills that allow her to create engaging visuals for print and online publication.Nike also teaches classes for UAF and makes sure to create online classroomsthat are visually engaging for her students. She also authored chapters inmultiple educational textbooks and her research on body positivity in socialmedia has been published in conference proceedings.
