BenHokum was the "son" in BenHokum & Son Limited lumberbusiness and passed at age 89.- On January 29, it becamemandatory for gun owners toregister their guns in Quebec.February- Garrison Petawawa releaseda report that 1 in 10 employeesin Renfrew County are employed by Garrison Petawawa, andthat the base contributes 802.5million annually throughout thecounty of Renfrew.- The Pembroke & AreaAirport commissioned a reporton the value of the airport to theregion and it came back overwhelmingly positive. The reportnoted the airport was "a greatasset" to the region with benefitscounty-wide and into Quebecand applauded the airport’s fiscalprudence.- A fire at Hilltop Farm inLaPasse resulted in 1million indamage and the loss of 150livestock. The farm is owned byLilly and Leo Laderoute.- Bill McAdam of RenfrewPrinting and Rosaleen Dicksonof The Equity newspaper inShawville passed away.McAdam was 84; Dickson 96.- Tay Valley councillor JudyFarrell was directed to apologizeto staff who complained abouther harassing conduct, but shechose not to do so. Farrell wasthen directed to only speak to theCAO, could not sit on municipalcommittees or represent themunicipality at conferences.- The County of Renfrew 2018budget is 152,193.00 with 40million coming from its membermunicipalities. They have nearly 26 million in reserves.- Arnprior Mayor David Reidannounces he will not seek reelection in the 2018 municipal, apromise he made in 2010.- Scott Hardware in DowntownRenfrew celebrated its 100thanniversary.March- The province of Ontariodecides to mandate training forfirefighters, which potentiallyresults in the loss of rural firedepartments across Ontario. The Safe Food forCanadians Regulations focuseson prevention and allowing forfaster removal of unsafe foodfrom the marketplace. They willreduce an unnecessaryadministrative burden onbusinesses by replacing 14 setsof regulations with one, and willhelp maintain and grow marketaccess for Canada's agri-foodand agricultural sector. Theregulations will require foodbusinesses that import or preparefood for export or to be sentacross provincial or territorialborders to have licences, as wellas preventive controls thatoutline steps to address potentialrisks to food safety. To collectpublic holiday pay, employeesmust have worked the lastregularly scheduled day or shiftbefore the holiday and the firstregularly scheduled day or shiftafter the holiday.Pay FormulaTo calculate public holidaypay, take the regular wages overthe last four weeks before theholiday and divide by 20.When EmployeesWork The HolidayYour employee can agreeelectronically or in writing towork on the holiday and be paidtheir regular wages for all hoursworked on the public holidayand receive another substituteholiday for which they must bepaid public holiday pay. Regularwages does not include overtimepay, termination pay, severanceand premium pay, termination ofassignment pay (for temporaryhelp agency employees),personal emergency leave pay,domestic or sexual violenceleave pay or pay for otherholidays. Or, the employee canreceive public holiday pay pluspremium pay for all hoursworked on the public holidayand not receive another day off(a substitute holiday).A public holiday may fall on aday your employee is notscheduled to work; theseholidays must be given on asubstitute weekday.
