Life Cycle of a MammalA mammal is aparticular type ofanimal. There are twothings that makemammals special:Mammals make milk tofeed their babies. They are all warmblooded. This meansthey can maintain aconstant bodytemperature, independent of thetemperature of theirenvironment. These creatures are all mammals:

Life Cycle of a MammalHere are the stages of the life cycle of a rabbit, a mammal. Every mammal has thesame life cycle.EmbryoAdultThe embryo growsinside the femalerabbit. The adult male rabbitwill mate with an adultfemale rabbit andreproduce.Rabbit Life CycleKitten(baby rabbit)AdolescentThe young rabbitgrows anddevelops. The kitten drinksmilk from thefemale. As it grows,it develops fur andstarts to eat solidfood.

ReproductionMammals use sexual reproduction to produce their offspring.Just like plants, mammals use sexualreproduction so theyneed a male andfemale part to makethe offspring. The male and femalepart fuse together tomake a new cellThis fertilised cellsplits in half, creatingtwo cells. These cellscontinue to divide, sothat the number ofcells doubles eachtime. Eventually, thecells will form a baby, and the heart starts tobeat. The baby will growinside the female forthe length of thepregnancy. This isknown as thegestation period. Atthe end of thepregnancy, the babyis born.

ReproductionMonotremesThere is a group ofmammals calledmonotremes that do notgrow their young insidetheir bodies. Monotremeslay eggs instead of givingbirth to live babies. Theonly existing monotremesare the platypus and theechidna, and they live inAustralia and New Guinea. They are still classed asmammals because oncetheir babies are hatchedout they do feed them milk.

Different MammalsThere are three different groups of mammals:Placentals: theiryoung grow inside thefemale's body and areborn fully developed.Marsupials: their youngare born incompletelydeveloped. They are thencarried and fed in apouch on the female'sstomach until they arefully developed.Monotremes: theiryoung hatch fromeggs.

Insect Life Cycle Level L 5 6 These animals have a different kind of life cycle. A life cycle is the series of changes an animal goes through during its life. Insects have fascinating life cycles. Some insects have a four-stage life cycle. The insect lives as an egg, larva (LAR-vuh), pupa (PYOO-puh), and an adult. Others have a three-stage life
