1Lincoln Park Academy 9th Grade English I Summer Reading AssignmentFor the 2021-2022 school year at LPA, all incoming 9th grade students will read three novelsover the summer and complete an assignment for each novel. The required 9th grade novel isAnthem by Ayn Rand.Overview: Required NovelAnthem is Ayn Rand’s classic tale of a dystopian future of the great “We”—a world that deprivesindividuals of a name or independence. In Anthem, Rand examines a frightening future in which individuals have no name, noindependence, and no values. Equality 7-2521 lives in the dark ages of the future where alldecisions are made by committee, all people live in collectives, and all traces of individualismhave been wiped out. Despite such a restrictive environment, the spark of individual thought andfreedom still burns in him – a passion which he has been taught to call sinful. In a purelyegalitarian world, Equality 7-2521 dares to stand apart from the herd – to think and choose forhimself.Overview Choice NovelsIn addition, students will also choose two novels from the Florida Teens Read List. The FloridaTeen Read list can be found 1420659/ftr 2021-2022 annotated list.pdfand the list is below.Assignment One: AnthemAfter students read the novel, they will complete the attached chart. Students can either recreatethe chart in Microsoft Word OR they can print and fill in the chart. Please see page three for thechart. *You do not need to complete a plot diagram for this novel.Assignment Two: Two choice novelsAfter you read the two choice novels, please complete the attached plot curve and literarytrait/term chart assignment for each novel.Students must read the three novels and complete the required assignments. Theassignments are due on the first day of school! No exceptions! This will be a formativegrade. If assignments are not turned in on time, the grade will become an automatic 50%.The deadline for late assignments is Friday of the first week of school. You will be tested on Anthem likely during the second or third week of school. You will alsocomplete an in-school assignment that shows your knowledge of the two choice novels youread. These will be worth TWO summative grades.*Alternate Texts: If you are not comfortable with your options for the Choice Novels (allstudents MUST read Anthem), you may choose novels from the below list:To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper LeeLord of the Flies by William GoldingMonster by Walter Dean Myers

2Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 by Richard Paul EvansPlagiarism: All work that you complete must be your own. Summer reading is not a group orpartner assignment, nor can you copy from websites, such as Sparknotes, Cliffnotes, or any otherwebsite that may provide answers. Work that is plagiarized will earn a 0%. There will be noexceptions.

3Assignment One: Reading Chart for Anthem *Feel free to recreate the chart, make it bigger, etc., butkeep the assigned prompts. Please see examples of each prompt below the chart.Definition of the Term (how the Textual Evidence withConceptnovella defines it – not just aan MLA citation, thatdictionary definition).explains how Equalityeither demonstrates orconfronts the conceptin ometheus(Character inGreekMythology)Discuss how the term issignificant in the reader’sunderstanding. What is Randtrying to convey about thisparticular concept?

4Chart Prompt Examples:Definition of the Term (how the novella defines it – not just a dictionary definition).Example –Collectivism is defined as a societal belief where the “emphasis is placed on collective effortrather than individual action or identity.”Textual Evidence with an MLA citation, that explains how Equality either demonstrates orconfronts the concept in Anthem.Example–Rand exemplifies this concept through reference to Anthem’s societal values: “We are nothing.Mankind is all. By the grace of our brothers are we allowed our lives. We exist through, by and for ourbrothers who are the State. Amen” (Rand 21).Discuss how the term is significant in the reader’s understanding. What is Rand trying to conveyabout this particular concept?Example -Equality references the pledge that he and his brothers must recite in the Home of the Studentsat the end of each day. Much like American society, Anthem reinforces the core values of its society bycreating a ritual where citizens pledge their loyalty to the ideals of the state. While Anthem’s rituals aresimilar to American society, it is clear that the values each culture possess are extremely different, withAnthem valuing one’s contribution to state over any sense of individuality. Without a doubt, Equality hasbeen raised in a civilization where its people have been trained from birth to realize that establishing anyform of personal identity is looked down upon by its ruling body.
