Providing Hunger ReliefFOR IOWA FAMILIESINCREASED ITS IMPACT BY27Parents in financial need may face even more difficulty providing complete andnutritious meals to their children during summer months when school lunchprograms are not available.The “Haul Out Hunger” Program continues the long-standing efforts of IowaSelect Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation to support localfood pantries while highlighting and building awareness of foodinsecurity issues in Iowa.THROUGHOUT THE THREE-WEEK “HAUL OUT HUNGER”PROGRAM PERIOD, Iowa Select Farms employees traveledmore than 3,500 miles to deliver 937 cases containing 11,244fresh pork loins weighing a total of 56,220 pounds (28 tons). Theeffort restocked refrigerators and freezers in 98 food pantries andcommunity shelves located in 67 Iowa communities.THE BONELESS PORK LOINS ARE APPROXIMATELY4.5 - 5 POUNDS EACH and can feed 24 people a threeounce serving of pork. The pork loins donated throughthe 2017 “Haul Out Hunger” program provided nearly300,000 servings to Iowa families; nearly 70,000 morethan the 2016 donation.A 16-PAGE BOOKLET TO PROVIDE FAMILIESWITH INFORMATION about how to properlystore, handle and prepare the pork accompaniedeach loin. The booklet also contains a collection ofeasy and economical recipes for families to preparethe pork loin into a full meal, and even stretch it intoseveral meals.

OPERATIONCHRISTMAS MEAL FEEDS11,000 FAMILIES IN NEEDAND EXPANDS TO 12 RURALIOWA COMMUNITIESOperation Christmas Meal is an annual Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation holiday tradition.The event is held each December at the Iowa State Fairgrounds where Iowa Select Farmsdistributes 5,000, 4½-pound pork loins to food insecure families.More than 120 Iowa Select Farms employees hand out the fresh loins during a unique live,on-site radio broadcast featuring WHO Radio personalities Van Harden and Bonnie Lucasof the Van and Bonnie in the Morning show. The project is a joint effort by all to assist inbringing struggling families together for a nutritious holiday dinner.Prior to the event, Iowa Select Farms’ employees invite families who are part oforganizations such as Children and Family Services, Bethel Mission, HopeMinistries, United Way, Joppa Outreach, Food Bank of Iowa, Iowa Food BankAssociation and others to come to the fairgrounds to pick up a pork loin.Event organizers further spread the joy of giving by encouraging those withoutneed to pick up a pork loin and provide it to someone they know who is in need,such as a struggling single mother or an elderly neighbor.THE FOUNDATIONINCREASED ITS 2017OPERATION CHRISTMASMEAL GIVING BY175

Making Life BetterFOR CHILDRENWITH CANCERThe Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation is proud to have provided 250,000to assist in the establishment of the Cancer and Blood Disorders Center atBlank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines. The Cancer and Blood DisordersCenter, designed uniquely for kids and families, cares for 600 patientsthroughout the year, performing approximately 200 procedures and7,000 infusions annually.THE FOUNDATIONHAS SUPPORTED 100 MORECHILDREN IN 2017, TOTALING600IOWA FAMILIES STATEWIDE.The Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation also donated anadditional 250,000 to assist in the creation of Children’sCancer Connection’s Hansen Home for Hope. Locatedjust minutes from Blank Children’s Hospital, the HansenHome for Hope offers a place for families with childrenundergoing oncology treatments to gather for events,programs and numerous services for patients, parentsand siblings.Hansen Home for Hope also provides a warm andwelcoming space for families utilizing services andcare at Blank Children’s Hospital to do laundry,take a shower, cook a meal and relax.

FebruaryIn February, employees of Iowa Select Farms organized and shipped600 Valentine’s Day Care Packages for every family associated withthe Children’s Cancer Connection, bringing a smile to the faces ofchildren and siblings alike.JuneIn June, parents of Children’s Cancer Connection opened their mail to find Grilling Pork Bucks,a pork coupon kit complete with summer grilling recipes and ideas. The kit was designed towelcome the season of backyard grilling and outdoor family activities and was stuffed with 40 worth of coupons for fresh pork, bacon, ribs, ham and ground pork.AugustIn August, the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation organized the “Back-to- School Bash” incooperation with Children’s Cancer Connection. The event features games, crafts, foodand free school supplies for kids. Families are also treated to dinner and outdooractivities, along with fun raffles and fellowship. Kids get excited about school byparticipating in three “classes”— Art, English and Recess! At the end of the event, thefamilies pick out their school and art supplies, all donated by the employees andcontractors of Iowa Select Farms.OctoberIn October, children opened their doors to a spooktacular surprise. The Halloween CarePackages arrived at the homes of 600 special families the weekend before Halloween.Inside the care package children found a box within filled with chewy, gooey andgummy treats. Two bags of caramel popcorn dressed in orange, black, purple andgreen lay next to festive Halloween foaming soaps.Tucked between a sticker book and a make-your-own candy jewelry kit, kids found aHalloween Family Activity Book created by the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation. Theactivity book contained 70 pages full of bingo, mazes, recipes, games and activities.DecemberA December Christmas party comes complete with crafts, games and special gifts.Nearly 50 children participated in the 2016 event at the Hansen Home for Hope forthe annual “Holiday Drop Off Children’s Party.” The event allows parents of familiesundergoing cancer treatment an evening to shop for presents, enjoy a quiet dinneror run errands while their children enjoyed pizza, crafts and bingo.Iowa Select Farms employees teamed up with Children’s Cancer Connection staff andvolunteers to organize the crafts and activities throughout the evening. A shortprogram included a reading of “Twas The Night Before Christmas” and a visit fromSanta and Mrs. Claus. Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundationalso provided a present for every child who attended, and the crafts completed bythe children earlier in the evening were wrapped and presented to the parentsduring pick-up.

SHOWING GRATITUDETO MEMBERS OF THEARMED SERVICES ANDMILITARY FAMILIESThe Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation and Iowa SelectFarms strongly believes in showing gratitude andproviding support to those who serve in ourcountry’s Armed Services. That’s why everyDecember, 12,000 Iowa members of the ArmedServices receive a Pork Care Packagecontaining 40 worth of coupons good forvarious pork products, including fresh pork,ham, ribs, bacon and ground pork.Supplying the resources for several home-cookedmeals that helps bring families together is just one wayin which we say “Thank You” to the men and womenwho sacrifice so much while protecting our freedom.Iowa Select Farms employees delivered the Pork CarePackages to all units of the Iowa National Guard, alongwith the 132nd Fighter Wing, Iowa Air National Guard;185th Air Refueling Wing, Iowa Air National Guard; U.S.Army Reserves; U.S. Navy Reserves and U.S. MarineCorps Reserves. Pork Care Packages are also sent tothe Iowa National Guard’s Survivor Outreach Servicesto deliver to 600 Iowa families of fallen Soldiers.Pork Care Packages are accompanied by acookbook, seasoning packets or a useful“Grocery Buddy” notepad featuringprepopulated grocery lists whereshoppers can check off the itemsthey need to purchase.
