2015 MPC, MMC and IFGCSignificant ChangesBased on the 2015 Michigan Plumbing Code,(MPC), the 2015 Michigan Mechanical Code(MMC) and the 2015 International Fuel GaSCode (IFGC)

Purpose This program is designed to provide a general overviewof notable changes that occurred between the 2012 and2015 editions of the International Plumbing, Mechanicaland Fuel Gas (PMG) Codes. It is intended to acquaint users of the PMG Codes withsome of those provisions that have been added,modified or clarified with the previous edition. 406.1, 409.2 Backflow Protectionfor Clothes Washing and DishwashingMachines CHANGE TYPE: Modification The 2012 IPC required that an air gap within theappliance or an external backflow preventer in theappliance connections be provided. This modificationadds the standards designations with which air gapsmust comply, so that the enforcement can beaccomplished by the inspector identifying those standardnumbers either on the machines or in the literature forthe machines. 607.2.1 Hot Water TemperatureMaintenance System Controls CHANGE TYPE: Modification Changes in the commercial portion of the International EnergyConservation Code (IECC) caused changes in this IECC-controlledsection of the IPC. This section requires temperature maintenancesystems (for maintaining hot water temperature near plumbingfixtures) to be automatically turned off when there is not a demandfor hot water. The code change also makes it clear that the Section607.2.1 and its subsection 607.2.1.1 do not apply to Group R2, R3and R4 occupancies that are 3 stories or less in height above gradeplane, because those occupancies are covered by the residentialportion of the IECC.2015 IPC, IMC and IFGC Significant Changes36

708 Cleanouts for Drainageand Waste Systems CHANGE TYPE: Modification The section on cleanouts has been completelyreorganized and reworded for clarity. Brasscleanout plugs are permitted for metallic pipingonly. Where located at a finished wall, thecleanout must be within 1½ inches of thefinished surface. 715.1 Exception for BackwaterValve Installations CHANGE TYPE: Modification Retrofit of a backwater valve in accordance withthe code in an existing building is nearlyimpossible without the new exception.2015 IPC, IMC and IFGC Significant Changes44

717 Replacement of Sewersby Pipe-Bursting Method CHANGE TYPE: Addition Replacement of building sewers by the pipebursting method has been used for manydecades and is useful especially whereexcavation of the existing sewer is difficult andcostly because of parking lots and other itemson the ground surface that would need to beremoved and replaced.2015 IPC, IMC and IFGC Significant Changes46

802.1, 802.1.1, 802.1.8 Food-HandlingEquipment Indirect Connection CHANGE TYPE: Modification The section has been clarified to indicate thatSection 802.1 and its subsections do not applyto fixtures and equipment in dwelling units. 1106.3, 1106.6 Sizing of Guttersand Leaders CHANGE TYPE: Modification The 2012 Table 1106.2(2), which covered thevertical leader sizing requirements, has beenreplaced by the simplified Table 1106.3. The2012 Table 1106.6, which covered horizontalgutter sizing requirements, has been replacedby the simplified Table 1106.6.
