The College first began in 1928 as a normal school for the education of the Sisters andwas affiliated with the Catholic University of America in 1929. In 1961, the normal school was replaced with AquinasJunior College. Two significant milestones in the institution’s history occurred at this point: the College was moved fromSaint Cecilia Motherhouse to its present location, and it was opened to the public. In 1971, the College was welcomed into membership in the regional accrediting agency, the Southern Association ofColleges and Schools, to award the associate degree. In December 1993, the Commission on Colleges of the SouthernAssociation of Colleges and Schools granted Aquinas candidacy to award its first baccalaureate degree: the Bachelor ofArts in Teacher Education. This was followed by full reaffirmation and approval in 1996 by the same accrediting agency. In order to reflect this action, the institution’s original charter was officially amended to read Aquinas College andacademic programs and majors were added in response to the needs of the community and of the Church. The SouthernAssociation of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges reaffirmed accreditation in 2001 and again in 2011. In 2012,Aquinas College was granted approval to award master’s degrees in Education and in Nursing Education. That sameyear, Aquinas became a residential college with contracted use of Seton Lodge facilities at St. Thomas Hospital onadjoining property. Beginning in the fall of 2017, Aquinas College was reconfigured so that its focus will be that ofpreparing teachers to serve the Church in its mission of education.Current degrees and acknowledgements awarded areSchool of EducationB.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies, ElementaryB.S. in English, SecondaryB.S. in History, SecondaryEducation Licensure, Elementary4Aquinas College Catalog 2017-2018Education Licensure, SecondaryM.A. in Teaching, ElementaryM.A. in Teaching, SecondaryM.Ed. in Teaching and LearningArts & Sciences programsBachelor of Arts in EnglishBachelor of Arts in HistoryBachelor of Arts in PhilosophyBachelor of Arts in Theology
