Appalachian Hardwood Sustainable & LegalHIGH POINT, NC - The Appalachian Hardwood resource is growing at a rate of 2.45 for every tree that isharvested or dying combined, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The growth is the result of modern forest management and wise utilization. Buyers of Appalachian Hardwood logs and lumber can be assured of this becauseof Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc.An analysis of USDA data finds the growth to removals ratio in the Appalachian forest has increasedfive percent in the past five years.“This assures hardwood lumber consumers thatwhen they purchase products from the Appalachian region, they know the resource is sustainable,” said TomInman, AHMI President. “The forest landowners havedone exceptional work in managing their forests for wildlife, water resources, recreation and timber.”AHMI introduced the Appalachian HardwoodVerified Sustainable in 2007 tocertify its membersas producing, distributingandmanufacturinggoods from the region. The campaign educateswood consumers about the hardwood lumber resource.Lumber certification is a complex issue that has multiple stakeholders from the individual landowner throughthe retailer of finished goods. AHMI has researched anddeveloped programs to assist its members in makingdecisions that benefit both the environment and individual operations. The research is based on the U.S. Forest Service’sForest Inventory Analysis which is compiled in each stateby the U.S. Department of Agriculture. AHMI requestedspecific data from the 344 counties of the AppalachianRegion from northern Georgia through western NewYork.AHMI also found: Forested land in the 344-county region has increased 300,000 acres to 65.7 million acres More than 33 billion live trees are in the region,an increase from 32.7 billion The top species are Soft Maple, Red Oak, WhiteOak, Hard Maple and Yellow PoplarAccording to the U.S. Forest Service bulletin SRS142, considerable attention has been given to the Appalachian Region in the Eastern United States becauseof its scenic beauty, rich biodiversity, and abundance ofnatural resources. Of particular importance are the hardwood forests that dominate the Appalachian landscape. The association also launched the AppalachianHardwood Verified Legal program in 2013 to helpmembers explain to customers the legality of products. This initiative requires participating companies to follow a set of guidelines and verify that they:1) Operate a legal business entity;2) Follow accepted industry practices and all local, state and federal laws applicable to forest managementand timber harvesting including all applicable environmental regulations.3) Pay all compensation, taxes and fees due to timber owners or the owner’s designated representativeand government entities as required by local, stateand federal laws.Certificates areavailable frommember companies that explainthe program andconfirm participation.AHMI is a regional trade association headquartered in HighPoint, NC. Its mission is to promotethe hardwood timber and products from the AppalachianRegion of the eastern United States. The association’sbylaws dictate the producing region and these countiesmust meet elevation, soil composition and climate requirements to be included. The following guide is a listing of the 200 plus companies who are members of the association. This includes sawmills, concentration yards, wholesalers, foresters, secondary manufacturers and suppliers.AHMI has three meetings each year with its AnnualMeeting late February, the Summer Family Conferencethe last week of July and fall meetings and tours in October.
