Cambridge English: KeyLesson Plan: ReadingThis lesson plan accompanies Cambridge English: Key 7 Reading and Writing Test 4 Parts 1, 2, 3, 4and 5, Questions 1-35.This lesson is suitable for students towards the end of their Cambridge English: Key course.This lesson is also suitable for any A2 course in order to enhance students’ English reading skills.Lesson Goals1. To familiarise students with the various question types of the Cambridge English: KeyReading Test Parts 1-5.2. Practise Key reading skills including: intensive reading, prediction within a specific context,skimming, scanning, reading for gist and for specific purposes.3. Improve students’ ability to read a short text to determine if statements are true, false ornot given.Activity (see brackets for resources required)Warmer (individual copies of Part 1) Group students to think of signs or notices they see regularly inparks, shops, schools, universities and other public areas. Askthem to think what their purpose is (i.e.to warn, to instruct, topersuade, to protect, etc.)In the same groups ask students to think of possible wording forone of these signs and write it down.Ask a member of each group to read out their sign for the othersin the class to identify the place.Briefly elicit why the example answer is H for Part 1.Ask students to do Q1 to Q5.Elicit the correct answer for each question. Pair students to look at the example and discuss why they think Cis the correct answer. If necessary, tell them to focus on theword following the gap. Elicit a few of their ideas.Group your students to discuss Q6, decide on an answer and whythey think so. Give them the answer and elicit why the other twoare incorrect.Ask students to do the remaining four questions individuallybefore giving them the answers.Part 3 Pair your students and give out Resource 2. Ask them tobrainstorm a possible positive and negative response to thequestions. Elicit a few of their ideas on the board. Ask students to do Q11 to Q15 individually before giving themthe answers. Briefly discuss each answer if necessary. Pair students and give them Resource 3. Focus their attention onthe discussion. Tell them they are discussing going to a musicconcert. Ask them to write in B’s response. Group students toread and compare their conversations. Tell students to do Q16 to Q20 individually and then give themthe answers. Elicit the importance of reading for detail thedialogue that comes before and after the selected answer.Part 5 Pair students and ask students to turn to the text for Part 5 onpage 82. Ask them to underline the words around the gap in Q28to Q35 and then predict what possible word could fill the gaps. Tell students to do the questions on page 83 before eliciting theiranswers.Extension activity (individual copies of Part 4)Part 4 Tell students to turn to Part 4 on page 80/81. Read the taskinstructions with the learners and elicit what they understand bythe terms ‘right’, ‘wrong’ and ‘doesn’t say’. Discuss the meaningof ‘rowing’. Ask students to underline ‘there are lots of places’ in Q21 andgive them the correct answer (A). Ask them to scan the text andelicit why this is the correct answer (agrees with the text). Ask students to underline ‘Martin says David is nearly as good’ inQ22 and give them the answer (B).
