Max Heindel, spiritual Initiate and messenger of theRosicrucian Brotherhood, was born in Denmark on July 23, 1865.He became a shipping engineer and eventually emigrated to theUnited States. By 1905 he had become seriously interested in thestudy of metaphysics, and spent the next few years consciouslyworking and searching for spiritual Truths. When he was visitingGermany in 1907, the Elder Brother of the Rose Cross whobecame his Teacher made contact with him on the inner planes. Hewas instructed in the etheric Temple of the Rose Cross, receivingthe occult Teachings that he eventually incorporated into TheRosicrucian Cosmo-Conception, published in November 1909. Hefounded The Rosicrucian Fellowship in August 1909, and spenthis remaining years, until January 6, 1919, writing, lecturing, establishing Fellowship Headquarters in Oceanside, California, and generally spreading the Teachings of Esoteric Christianity the pioneer spiritual Teachings which will prepare all humanity forthe New Age of Aquarius, when all nations will join in UniversalBrotherhood.

An Interpretation of Our SymbolismHow often have we looked at the cover of the CosmoConception and our other publications and perhapsremarked that it was a good design and quite unique, andwondered who made it up, and if it meant anything at all.The following are the thoughts of one who has often tried tointerpret it.At the foot of the cover is the fleur-de-lis, the emblemof the Trinity - Father, Son and Spirit - but as only theFather and Spirit were active at the time here represented,we find but two of the petals colored with red, thus showingenergy. The beings created we see as a stream flowing upwards, provided for a time with but two bodies, the dense and thevital, but after a time the desire body is added and is shownby the red appearing in the ascending stream.Although each stream looks alike outwardly, they arevastly different, the one on the left being known in ourliterature as the Sons of Cain. They are full of positiveenergy and are the craftsman of the world, the phreemessen, who carve their way through life, rather enjoyingthe obstacles which they know strengthen the character. They work through the intellect, as is shown by the lampfrom the flame of which proceeds nine rays, showing thepositive path chosen by the esoteric student. The other stream develops the heart side of life and thedivine flame proceeding from it shows but eight rays, anegative path. Those following it, desiring that they shouldhave a leader, someone to follow, someone to worship, theyare the churchmen of the world who obey the teachings oftheir leaders. Each stream of life flows onward side by side till a timecomes when the wise and loving ones guiding the evolution, decide that to hasten progress it is necessary that the twounite and plan that this shall be accomplished by thebuilding of a Temple for the worshipers by the craftsmen

and that both streams would unite in a Mystical Molten Sea.We can see the wonderful impulse by the chalice raisedfrom each and filled with the red wine of life. You will readthe story of this in the building of Solomon's Temple. Thisplan was frustrated by the treachery of the Sons of Seth those on the right. And after this each swung further awayfrom the other than before.A serious condition now is shown in which some appearto fall away entirely through materialism. But still the racelives on, the churchman and the scientist, the mystic and theoccultist, each pursuing their own path independent of theother, till a stage of such materialism is reached that thespiritual guiders see grave dangers ahead. To prevent theplan of evolution being defeated, a great destruction ofhuman bodies is permitted - the present war (World War 1) which for a time looks as if it would wipe humanity off theearth. See the break in each stream. But this calamity hasthe desired effect, we now see again great force and eachstream turned directly towards the other, where they mayshortly unite as one.At the foot of the page we find another symbol, so smallthat you may have overlooked it. Here is a small blackcross, that represents the physical body. In the enlargedhead of the cross is seen the heart. Heart and head haveunited and the result is shown in the spreading ray - theresultant soul body.Still another emblem occupies the center of the page the Rose Cross. The lower limb represents the plant life, which draws its sustenance from its roots. At one time ofour existence we were plant-like. The cross piece is theemblem of our passage through the animal stage with itshorizontal spine. The upper limb is the symbol of mindwhich is a human attribute, and the radiant star representsthe golden wedding garment which shall make us divine.

FOREWORDThis compilation of material concerning thehealth and healing of the human organism, asconsidered from the occult viewpoint, affordsthose interested in attaining and maintaininghealth a treasure chest of valuable information.Max Heindel, a trained clairvoyant andinvestigator of the super-physical worlds, devotedmuch time and effort to ascertaining the realcauses of physical and mental disorders asrevealed in the realm of cause, the higher orsuperphysical planes, and this volume contains thefruits of his labor. It embodies some of the mostpriceless truths in regard to the origin, functions, and proper care of the vehicles of man to be foundon the printed page, and those concerned with thetrue art of healing will find it an indispensableaddition to their libraries.Christ admonished His disciples, “Preach theGospel, and heal the sick.” Maintaining health, when once gained or regained, requires aknowledge of “the Gospel”, or laws of God, and itis therefore in light of both parts of the commandof the Great Teacher that this book is dedicated tothe afflicted of humanity. May the contents of itspages, permeated as they are with the love and

compassionate understanding of the mystic heartof the author, be the means of bringing new solaceand relief to countless aching hearts and sufferingbodies, as well as speed the day for the generationof more perfect human vehicles.Note to the reader: Occult Principles of healthand Healing is a compilation of materials frommultiple books. A space between the paragraphsindicates the next paragraph is from a different bookor different section of the same book—the twoparagraphs are not related. If there is no spacebetween the two paragraphs, then the nextparagraph continues from the previous paragraph.

PART IMAN AND HIS VEHICLES

CHAPTER ITHE DENSE BODYIntroductionOccult science teaches that man is a complex beingwho possesses:(1) A Dense Body, which is the visible instrumenthe uses here in this world to fetch and carry; the bodywe ordinarily think of as the whole man.(2) A Vital Body, which is made of ether andpervades the visible body as ether permeates all otherforms, except that human beings specialize a greateramount of the universal ether than other forms. Thatethereal body is our instrument for specializing thevital energy of the Sun.(3) A Desire Body, which is our emotional nature. This finer vehicle pervades both the vital and densebodies. It is seen by clairvoyant vision to extend aboutsixteen inches outside our visible body, which islocated in the center of this ovoid cloud as the yolk isin the center of the egg.(4) The Mind, which is a mirror, reflecting theouter world and enabling the Ego to transmit itscommands as thought and word, also to compel action. The Ego is the threefold Spirit which uses thesevehicles to gather experience in the school of life.

12OCCULT PRINCIPLES OF HEALTH & HEALINGEvolutionThe dense body was the first vehicle built and hastherefore an enormous period of evolution back of it. Itis in its fourth stage of development and has nowreached a great and marvelous degree of efficiency. Itwill, in time, reach perfection, but even at present it isthe best organized of man’s vehicles. It is awonderfully constructed instrument and should berecognized as such by everyone pretending to have anyknowledge of the constitution of man.The germ of the dense body was given by theLords of Flame during the first Revolution of theSaturn Period, the first of the Seven Great Days ofManifestation according to the Rosicrucian Teachings. This germ was somewhat developed during theremainder of the first six Revolutions, being given thecapacity for developing the sense organs, particularlythe ear. Therefore, the ear is the most highly developedorgan we possess. In the first half of the Saturn Revolution of the SunPeriod, the second of the Seven Great Days ofManifestation, the Lords of Flame were concernedwith certain improvements to be made upon the germof the dense body. It became necessary to change thegerm in such a way as to allow interpenetration by avital body, also capability of evolving glands and analimentary canal. This was done by the joint action ofthe Lords of Flame and the Lords of Wisdom. In the first or Saturn Revolution of the MoonPeriod, the third of the Seven Great Days ofManifestation, the Lords of Wisdom cooperated with

THE DENSE BODY13the Lords of Individuality to reconstruct the germ ofthe dense body. This germ had unfolded embryonicsense organs, digestive organs, glands, etc. and wasinterpenetrated by a budding vital body. Of course, itwas not solid and visible as it is now, yet in a crudesort of way it was somewhat organized. In the MoonPeriod it was necessary to reconstruct it and make itcapable of being interpenetrated by a desire body, andalso capable of evolving a nervous system, muscle, cartilage, and a rudimentary skeleton. Thisreconstruction was the work of the Saturn Revolutionof the Moon Period. These Moon beings were not sopurely germinal as in the previous periods. To thetrained clairvoyant they appear suspended by strings inthe atmosphere of the fire-fog, as the embryo hangsfrom the placenta by the umbilical cord. Currents, which provided some sort of nourishment, flowed inand out from the atmosphere through those cords. When the Earth came out of chaos, at thebeginning of the Earth Period, it was at first in the darkred stage known as the Polarian Epoch. Therehumanity first evolved a dense body, the germ ofwhich was given by the Lords of Flame during theFirst Revolution of the Saturn Period. It was not thenat all like our present vehicle, of course. When thecondition of the Earth became fiery, as in theHyperborean Epoch, the vital body was added and manbecame plantlike, that is to say, he had the samevehicles as our plants have today, and also a similarconsciousness, or rather, unconsciousness, to thatwhich we have in dreamless sleep when the dense andvital bodies are left upon the bed.

14OCCULT PRINCIPLES OF HEALTH & HEALINGAt that time, in the Hyperborean Epoch, the bodyof man was like an enormous gas bag, floating outsidethe fiery Earth, and it threw off plantlike spores, whichthen grew and were used by other incoming entities. Atthat time man was double sexed, a hermaphrodite. In the Lemurian Epoch, when the Earth hadsomewhat cooled and islands of crust had begun toform amid boiling seas, then also man's body hadsomewhat solidified and had become more like thebody we see today. It was apelike, a short trunk withenormous arms and limbs, the heels projectingbackward, and almost no head—at least the upper partof the head was nearly entirely wanting. Man lived inthe atmosphere of steam which occultists called firefog, and had no lungs, but breathed by means of tubes. He had the gill-like apparatus still present in thehuman embryo while passing through the stage ofantenatal life corresponding to that epoch. He had nowarm, red blood, for at that stage there was noindividual Spirit. He had a bladder-like organ inside, which he inflated with heated air to help him leapenormous chasms when volcanic eruptions destroyedthe land upon which he was living. From the back ofhis head there projected an organ which has nowdrawn into the head and is called by anatomists thepineal gland, or the third eye, although it was never aneye, but a localized organ of feeling. The body wasthen devoid of feeling, but when man came too closeto a volcanic crater, the heat was registered by thisorgan to warn him away before his body wasdestroyed. At that time the body had already so far solidifiedthat it was impossible for man to continue to propagateby spores, and it was necessary that he should evolve

THE DENSE BODY15an organ of thought, a brain. The creative force whichwe now use to build railways, steamships, etc., in theouter world, was then used inwardly for the building oforgans. Like all forces it was positive and negative. One pole was turned upward to build the brain, leavingthe other pole available for the creation of anotherbody. Thus man was no longer a complete creativeunit. Each possessed only half the creative force, and itwas therefore necessary for him to seek hiscomplement outside himself. In the latter part of the Lemurian Epoch the formof man was still quite plastic. The skeleton hadformed, but man himself had great power in moldingthe flesh of his own body and that of the animals abouthim. At this time, when he was born, man could hearand feel, but his perception of light came later. TheLemurian had no eyes. He had two sensitive spotswhich were affected by the light of the sun as it shonedimly through the fiery atmosphere of ancientLemuria, but it was not until nearly the close of theAtlantean Epoch that he had sight as we have it today. His language consisted of sounds like those ofNature. The sighing of the wind in the immense
