DISCLAIMERThe Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) Undergraduate Handbook is provided forthe convenience of current and prospective students and staff. It sets out theFaculty’s regulations governing the programmes offered; policies andguidelines; description of programmes and courses offered on the MonaCampus, and the Western Jamaica Campus (WJC).The current edition was finalized in August 2020. A concerted effort was madeto eliminate all errors but students must check the Faculty’s website and theirDepartment at the start of the semester and during the course of the academicyear for updates as well as corrections of any errors or omissions that havecome to light subsequent to the finalization of the Handbook. Students shouldalways check with the latest Faculty Handbook when considering programmealternatives and for course offerings.1

STRUCTURE OF THE 2020-2021 UNDERGRADUATE HANDBOOKPurpose and ScopeThis Undergraduate Handbook is intended for use by:(i) Prospective students(ii) New and continuing students(iii) StaffIt may be used as a prospectus, an orientation guide, and a referencehandbook for the groups mentioned above. It is intended to serve as ageneral source for Faculty regulations and programme information. Theregulations, however, are to be used as a supplement rather than asubstitute for the official sources of University policies and procedures.The programmes of study requirements outlined in this Handbook are to befollowed strictly by:(i) newly-admitted students, i.e., students accepted to the Facultyduring the 2020-2021 academic year;(ii) students who transferred into the Faculty during the 2020-2021academic year;(iii) Students approved for a change of Major/Special/Minor during the2020-2021 academic year.Organisation and Layout of the HandbookTo ensure that information is easily accessible, the 2020-2021Undergraduate Handbook is divided into eight main parts. Prospective students will2

find information relating to admission requirements, application proceduresas well as a list of degree or diploma programmes from which to choose.Part III provides information on general degree regulations for allundergraduate programmes, as well as regulations governing theexaminations process and the Faculty’s Summer School programme.Part IV outlines information related to the student’s programme of study.Each section begins with a welcome message from the Head of Departmentfollowed by information and guidelines that are specific to each department.Requirements for each Major, Minor or Special; course offerings for thecurrent year, course descriptions, anti-requisites and pre-requisites are alsostated.Part V This section outlines anti-requisite courses and lists courses offered inalphabetical order with a succinct description.Part VI Highlights:(i) Dean’s List and the criteria for inclusion(ii) List of Faculty and Departmental prizes and awards(iii) Overview of the Faculty’s Honours Society(iv) Clubs and societies organized by students in the FacultyPart VII is designed to promote an acceptable standard of attitudes andbehaviours among students and outlines the rules and responsibilities, codesof conduct and guidelines on the use of University and Faculty facilities.Part VIII contains the Undergraduate Coursework Accountability Statement.New students may opt to use the quick guide to registration and courseselection information, and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) tosupplement information received during Orientation and Registration Week.Students will also find a list of service providers or request handlers in theFaculty and instructions on how to apply for or request these services via theAutomated Student Request System (ASRS). See Appendix V for steps onhow to access the system.Students should note that the Faculty continuously updates its website(https://www.mona.uwi.edu/socsci/) with announcements and up-to-dateinformation on programmes of study and university regulations, Facultyevents and resources, as well as other student enrichment resources thatwere not included in this publication.3

MESSAGE FROM THE DEANAs you start the 2020-2021 academic year, the world faces a pandemic ofunprecedented proportions. All aspects of human life have changed, fromhow we socialize, get an education, prioritize spending and conduct business,to how we govern community and national activities. Physical distancing hashad social, mental health and financial implications. The only solution to thishealth crisis, has thus far involved behavioural change. Social sciences, thestudy of human behaviour, has never been more important or exciting! It isin this context that we welcome you to the Faculty of Social Sciences!As you embark upon, or resume your programme of study in the SocialSciences, you are encouraged to do so with an awareness of the importantopportunity that has been presented to you. As a student of the SocialSciences you have an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of thecritical challenges facing our societies, and to help formulate solutions thatwill shape the future of our communities, countries and region.Note, however, that in order to capitalize on this opportunity, you will haveto be conscientious in applying yourself to the rigorous processes of learningand personal development that are at the core of the Social Sciencesexperience. The experience may be a bit different this year, with emphasison online learning, but the fundamentals of a sound education remain thesame. Learning is far more than merely reproducing material and earninggood grades. The result of true learning is the ability to be analytical, to thinkcritically and creatively, to be innovative, and to communicate effectively, allwhile being rooted in a sound ethical foundation. Our students should beinquirers, raising their own questions, conducting research, and yearning forthe exhilaration of hard-won insight.Our numerous programmes offer you a wide variety of options and aredesigned to allow you to pursue the areas about which you are passionate.The surest way to excel in your academic journey is to completely immerseyourself in the experience. Choose courses that excite and challenge you,because they will force you to grow. Focus on what you can learn, rather9

than what you need to know to pass an exam. Discipline yourself andmanage your time effectively. Look for and create opportunities, even in thisglobal health crisis, to get involved, to serve others, and to build yourleadership skills.The Faculty of Social Sciences stands ready to support you in your journey.This academic year has started in unusual circumstances. The COVID-19pandemic has necessitated that our courses be offered online, at least for thefirst semester. Our staff stands ready to provide the academic advice andadministrative support needed in this environment. We will best utilize thetechnology to enhance your experience with us.
