It was a group ofelementary school boys in theEast of the large lodge room at theMasonic Temple, 1635 L Street. Isubsequently had a conversationwith the poster of said photo, Bro.Andrew Loudon, a member of Lincoln Lodge No. 19 who is an estateplanning attorney at Baylor Evnen, and the following is what I learned:In the Fall of 2012, a groupof 5th grade boys at May Morleyelementary school in Lincoln ap-proached their fathers with the ideaof forming a Robotics Club. Allten boys enjoy constructing legorobots, and this group of futureengineers wanted to take theirinterest of “building stuff” to thenext level, to include computerprogramming of the robots. Theboys read about a competition thatthey could enter, and the entry feewas 50.00, plus they’d have topurchase supplies etc. The parents thought the cost would be abit prohibitive, and told the boysthey would have to think about it.However, one of the irsponsoringorganization, Lancaster Lodge No. 54, A.F. & rtesyofAndrewLoudonWorshipful Brother Tyler White, father of Nicholas White and thethen serving Master of LancasterLodge No. 54, brought the idea ofsponsoring the Morley RoboticsClub to his brethren. The brothersof Lancaster Lodge No. 54 enthusiastically endorsed the idea, andthe Morley Robotics Club becamethe Lancaster Lodge 54 RoboticsTeam! Over the Fall months, theboys met once a week to constructand engineer their robot made oflegos, which they named “Bob.”Bob is an amazing machine whocan bowl a strike and maneuver through an obstacle course. The team entered their firstcompetition in Humboldt, part ofthe First Lego League (FLL forshort), which was held Jan. 19 andplaced high enough to qualify forthe State competition, which washeld Feb. 16 at the Strategic Airand Space Museum in Ashlandat the Nebraska Robotics Expo.To show their gratitude tothe men of 54, the boys went tothe Masonic Temple on the nightof 54’s February business meeting to show the brethren, afterthe meeting, how Bob works andhow hard they had worked. Thebrethren were delighted withthe presentation and applaudedmightily when Bob completed histasks, which made the young tenand eleven year old boys beam.Afterwards, the boys weregiven a tour of the Lodge rooms, which all thought were “very cool.”On the way home, Lancaster Lodge54 robotics club member JohnLoudon, age 11, exclaimed to hisfather, Bro. Andrew Loudon, “Dad,when I grow up, I am going to bea Mason!” If this indeed happens,he will be a 4th generation Mason.GEAR-TECH-21The Robotics Competitionis sponsored through a projectat UNL called GEAR-TECH-21.The name stands for GeospatialAnd Robotics Technologies for the21st Century and is an innovativecurriculum that brings togetherrobotics, GPS (Global PositioningSystems) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems). The programis targeted for youth in grades 5-8.Existing 4-H clubs, after schoolgroups, Girl Scout and Boy Scouttroops, or any other group ofinterested youth may participate. You can find out more information by visiting the program’swebsite, http://4hset.unl.edu/.Tell our advertisersyou sawtheir adinThe Word of 54Shane Rhian, CorrespondentFebruarywasanother busy month for thebrethren at Lancaster 54.Morley ElementaryRobotics ClubThe members of MorleyElementary Robotics Club visitedLancaster 54 at there February business meeting.
