Never asaffordable as a Vauxhall Corsa or a FordFiesta, frequently behind on in-car techcompared with a Volkswagen Polo, andalmost always dowdy-looking besidea Peugeot 208 or a Renault Clio. And yet the Yaris is the fifth best-sellingsupermini across Europe and an enormouslyimportant car for Toyota, because it accountsfor almost one in four of the cars the companysells in the region. So the stakes are high forthe new, fourth-generation Yaris, and we’vehad our first chance to drive it on public roads.Despite previous sales of more than fourmillion units, this could be the first Yaristhat ends up on many supermini buyers’shortlists because, of course, it’s a hybrid. While there will be a 1.5-litre manual petrolversion (and the UK may, in time, also get a1.0-litre model), the majority of British Yarissales will be electrified. More than ever, thiscould be one of those moments wherecustomer trends move towards a model. The outgoing Yaris had a hybrid version,of course, but the new model looks set tomake a much stronger case for itself throughan all-new platform, a fresh look, a state-ofthe-art powertrain with a different type ofbattery, and several class firsts on safety kit.Let’s start with the platform. This Yaris sitson the Toyota New Global Architecture, the same core chassis component that hasalready impressed us in the C-HR and Corolla. In the case of the Yaris, it uses what Toyotacalls GA-B, the new, downsized version ofthe platform. But the benefits TNGA offers thiscar over its predecessor are considerable. It has 37 per cent more torsional rigidity, which benefits handling and gave Toyota’sengineers extra scope to cut down noise.Up front, there are MacPherson struts, mounted at a new angle that is designed toreduce the amount of vibration and noisetransferred up through the chassis. At therear, there’s a torsion beam that is 80 percent stiffer than the old car’s – and this,Toyota claims, has allowed the engineersto soften the springs and improve the ridewithout losing body control. This Yaris also bucks industry trendsby being slightly smaller than the car itreplaces. It’s 3,940mm long, so is lessthan the magic four-metre mark, but itswheelbase has been extended by 50mm,to 2,560mm. It’s a little wider and lower,“ The outgoing Yaris had ahybrid version, but the newcar looks set to make a muchstronger case for itself”9 12 February 2020giving it a more dramatic look, but we’ll letyou form your own views on the styling.Under the bonnet is an all-new versionof Toyota’s hybrid powertrain. There’s a1.5-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinderengine, backed up by a fresh developmentof the Power Control Unit that has evolvedin countless Toyota hybrids for more thantwo decades. It can adjust the mix betweenelectric power and petrol power more than10,000 times every second.Crucially, the battery tech moves fromnickel hydride to lithium-ion, deliveringpunchy electric torque and recouping moreenergy during braking. This extra potentialis the key, engineers claim, to reducing the‘rubber-band’ rev rises that occur whenthe driver quickly applies more throttle. On paper at least, the Yaris’s numbersmake impressive reading. Total systempower is 114bhp – enough for a sensible0-62mph time of 10.3 seconds. And thepreliminary efficiency figures are prettydazzling, when you consider that this is nota hybrid that requires any plug connection. The electrified Yaris emits just 86g/km onthe tougher WLTP test regime (64g/km usingthe correlated NEDC cycle), giving it fueleconomy of around 105mpg. And Toyotasays that in urban driving situations, thelithium-ion battery pack’s improvedperformance should allow you to spendas much as four fifths of your time onelectric power, without using any petrol. On the road, the first thing that strikesyou isn’t the powertrain but the chassis, because as with the larger TNGA modelsabove it, the Yaris’s base is an excellentone. The overallset-up strikes an appealing balancebetween composure and comfort. The steering has precious little feel, butit’s a quick enough configuration for theYaris to feel responsive, especially aroundtown. The turning circle is among thesmallest in the class, Toyota claims, andthis is certainly a car that feels adept atnipping through gaps in the traffic. The powertrain plays its part in this, too, because it is noticeably more comfortablewith life than the Mk3 Yaris’s system. Thatextra grunt from the electric side of thepartnership means that the engine is muchless likely to cut in after a few seconds, andyou’ll find yourself far more able to keep upwith traffic on minimal petrol power.Did we stretch to 80 per cent of the timeon electricity? But asensible approach delivers an experiencenot dissimilar to a conventional automaticgearbox – and all the while, the transitionsbetween electric and combined power aresupremely smooth. Even on a motorway, the Yaris does a solid job of cutting out theengine wherever possible, at up to 70mph.If anything, it’s on fast but twisty roadswhere hybrid systems reach their limit. No matter how good they are, they’re stillone step short of a regular motor and, inparticular, a manual gearbox when it comesto offering involvement. There are nosteering wheel paddles or false ratios to playwith, because the system’s not designedfor that sort of driving. So while you canenjoy crisp turn-in and flat cornering, youstill won’t really feel part of the action. This trait is made more frustrating becauseit emerges just as the chassis feels ready forsome fun. Never mind the utterly bonkersGR Yaris; we reckon that even a 180bhp11 12 February 2020controls Heating and ventilationswitches have a simple design, but theclimate-control system is backed upby a digital display to show settingsturbocharged petrol version with a six-speedgearbox would be a hoot. Either way, factorin city driving, that new-found motorwayprowess and general cruising, and you’releft with one of the more refined superminis.Even when the engine kicks in, the hybridsystem means that it’s more of a distant, slightly grumbly drone than anything else.If the hybrid powertrain is something ofa triumph, the cabin could still be the car’sweak point. There’s enough space for twoadults up front, but taller grown-ups won’tbe happy in the back seats; or at least, notas content as they would be in the latestClio. And the 281-litre boot space looksrespectable, before the Renault’s cavernous380-litre capacity is taken into account.In-car tech isn’t quite the nightmare itonce was, but only because Toyota is finallyoffering both Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto. Selecting either of these phone-basedsystems lets you avoid Toyota’s interface, which is still clunky and hampered bycomically old-looking graphics. But, at leastthe head-up display on our test car workedwell, showing all relevant informationclearly while minimising the amount of timeyou need to look away from the road. Top Story Toyota Yaris drivenToyota Yaris drivenTop StoryQ&ALuc NuytsToyota Europe Yaris project leaderQHow have you made such big gains with thisYaris’s chassis compared with the Mk3?A The answer is simple: TNGA. That technologygives us more rigidity and a different layout –different pick-up points for the suspension, andso forth – that all help to increase the rigidity. And we’ve also put in extra reinforcement ina few key areas, such as a strut brace acrossthe engine bay and a solid rail across thedashboard. These are things that we knew wewanted to do but they could only happen witha brand-new platform, like this one.QIt’s unusual to see a car getting smaller fora new generation.A Yes, but the key is the shorter overhangson the new Yaris – so we’ve extended thewheelbase. There’s also a lower driver’s seat fora greater feeling of involvement, and we’ve gotmuch more scope for adjustment in the steeringwheel, as well as a better angle.QYou’ve worked on the project from theEuropean side – and the car is built in France. How much input did Europe really have?A A substantial amount. We’ve been testingprototypes here extensively, not just at theNordschleife but also across mountain roadsand in city centres, in Europe. We wereparticularly involved in the fine-tuning ofareas like the steering.standard dash below it is plain in design, and there is no fully digital display to matchthe likes of the Polo. While our early car wasn’t entirelyrepresentative inside, from what we’ve seenso far, the Yaris will be up with the classbest on build quality, but maybe half a stepbehind the leaders on materials and flair.Expect lots of high-grade grey plastic, withthe odd fabric flourish to soften the mood.Specs have yet to be finalised, but weknow every Yaris will get lots of safety kit.Even the basic version will have adaptivecruise control that can operate at motorwayspeeds or in stop-start traffic, plus lane-traceassist and emergency steering assist. There’salso a feature that will watch for pedestrianscrossing streets that you’re turning into, andhalt the car if it feels a collision is likely. The tech that matters, it seems, is underthe skin. Much like its predecessors, this isa car that focuses on nailing the basics morethan cockpit trinkets. And in that respect, itis the most convincing and relevant smallToyota for many a year. All that’s left now isto see where UK prices sit in the market whenthe car goes on sale here in the autumn.13 12 February 2020VerdictMUCH as with its predecessors, the newYaris is a car that focuses on efficiency andease of ownership more than cabin trinkets. But these qualities have rarely been morerelevant than now, and the fact that the Mk4behaves so well on the road brings it rightinto the reckoning. It’s already safe to saythat this is the most complete small Toyotafor quite some time; and that we’re keento see how UK specs and prices stack up.Yaris drives well on country roads;boot offers 281 litres of roomHHHHwww.autoexpress.co.uk12 February 2020 14
