Ms. Kosh, Dance Director forHMS, is excited to welcome her new students and returning dancers withenthusiasm. She has high expectations for the 2016-2017 school year.Please read through this newsletter for information regarding dance attire,class expectations, the tardy policy, rehearsals, and performance dates.Additionally, mark your calendars and notify Ms. Kosh as soon as possibleif your student has a scheduling conflict. Ms. Kosh also asks that you sign,date & return the final page of this newsletter by Friday, August 26th.If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms. Kosh at yourconvenience. She looks forward to meeting each of you. It is going to bea fabulous year for Hopewell and the HMS dance department. Thank youfor your continued support.Getting Started I N DanceIn Dance, the students are expected to follow many studioguidelines daily. Students will dress out completely. Students will be in their warm-up lines 5 minutes after thetardy bell rings, dressed and prepared for class. Students will participate fully in daily warm-ups and workouts. Students will display respect to their instructor, guestchoreographers & fellow dancers at all times. Food, gum, beverages, phones, etc. will not be allowed inclass. Students will cooperate with others & display an openmind to learning new skills. Students will learn and follow proper dance class etiquette.

Just DancePage 2What HMS Dancers wearThe required Hopewell Dance uniform includes: Hopewell Dance T-shirt: Students will need to order a Hopewelldance t-shirt from the dance department for 10. Please see theattached order form & return it to Ms. Kosh by August 26th. Black Jazz Pants/Leggings: Students need to provide their own longblack jazz or yoga pants. Black Jazz Shoes: Students are also required to have black jazz shoesor plain black ankle socks.Beginning the 2nd week of school, students will need to dress out in theirown school-appropriate athletic shorts and a Hopewell t-shirt.Hopewell Middle School Dance students will be required to dress out intheir dance uniform beginning Tuesday, September 6th. (Please writetheir names permanently on the inside of their pants, t-shirts and jazzshoes.)Studio Uniform Guidelines:1. Both men and women are expected to wear their hair pulledback out of their face during dance class.2. NO jewelry may be worn during class with the exception ofstud earrings. All jewelry should be kept in a Ziploc baglocked in the student’s gym locker.3. Students are responsible for laundering their own clothes.4. Students should also bring roll-on deodorant to store in theirlocker. No aerosol body sprays, perfumes or glass bottles areallowed.5. All clothes left behind will be placed in the lost and found cagelocated in the dressing room. Small valuables that are leftbehind will be stored in the coaches’ office or with Ms. Kosh.6. If a student fails to dress out they will have difficultyparticipating and staying engaged in the learning activities forthe day. Therefore, their Personal Engagement Grade will beaffected.7. When a student provides a handwritten parental request not toparticipate, he/she is still required to dress out unless the notestates otherwise. As per TEA guidelines, a student may only beexcused a maximum of three consecutive days with a parentnote. A doctor’s note is required for excused lack ofparticipation for longer than three days.“I do not try todance better thananyone else. I onlytry to dance betterthan myself.”-Mikhail Baryshnikov

Page 3Just DanceThe Locker Room & Keeping Your Items SecureA locker is provided for each and every dance student. However, eachstudent needs to provide their own COMBINATION lock because allstudents are required to lock up all of their belongings every day.Students are not permitted to share their locker combination with anyonenor are they allowed to share lockers!!!In addition, students are not permitted to use cell phones when in thelocker room, especially as cameras as it is important that we protect theprivacy of each student using the locker room.Hopewell Middle School and/or Round Rock ISD is not liable for items thatare lost or stolen. Please take care of your dancewear and personal items.Also, remember to label all dancewear with students’ initials in permanentmarker so it can be returned to you if it is lost and then found.Dance students earn the gradeDance students earn grades by combining 3 categories to make 100%:Personal Engagement (40%), Formative Assessments (30%), and SummativeAssessments (30%).The Personal Engagement category demonstrates the students ability todress out fully thus being able to be actively engaged in daily lesson; theFormative Assessments are daily assignments, games and activities that aredeveloped to gauge the students progress throughout the unit; and finally,the Summative Assessments consist of the end of unit written quizzes andperformance quizzes.Late work is accepted 1 day late for a maximum of 70, and students have 1day per day absent to make up missed work including performance quizzes.Dance Grades Broken Down“When you dance,your purpose is notto get to a certainplace on the floor.It’s to enjoy eachstep along the way.”-Wayne Dyer40% Personal EngagementPersonal Engagement Grades are tabulated as follows: 100/weeko No Dance Clothes -10o Dressed out but not Dance Attire -5o No Dance Tshirt -5o No Dance Pants -5o Wearing Jewelry -5o Hair Down -5o Chewing Gum/Candy/Food -530% Formative Assessments30% Summative Assessments

Just DancePage 4Dance Students do Written Work?An educated dance student knows dancevocabulary, the history of the dance genres, andmuch more. Thus, it is essential for the dancestudent to not only dance but learn throughwritten work.At Hopewell, dance students are required to keepcertain supplies in the studio: A pocket folder with brads that containsloose-leaf paper (1st – RED; 2nd- BLUE; 3rdGREEN; 4th- ORANGE; 6th-PURPLE; 8thYELLOW) A composition notebook A pen or pencilIf supplies are lost, it is the responsibility of thestudent to replace them.Students Miss ClassWhen a dance student is absent, it is theirresponsibility to ask the instructor what theymissed & for their make-up work before or afterclass.It is also their responsibility to set up a time beforeor after school to learn missed choreography withthe instructor.Students Are Tardy to ClassDance students are expected to be in their warmup/roll call lines 5 minutes after the tardy bellrings.A student can acquire a tardy by being in thelocker room after the tardy bell or by being late totheir warm-up/roll call line.Spotlight on PerformancesFall Show, IntersectionStudents are required to perform in the annual RRISDDance Show Intersection. It is held at the PerformingArts Center located next to McNeil High School. Pleaseinvite your family and friends to the performance!
