The Reading EdgeA Middle Grades Reading ProgramThe Reading Edge, a research-based program for young adolescents, targetsthe skills and strategies middle school students need to be successful incontent-area learning. Since the range of reading achievement is extremelybroad in this age group, the Reading Edge provides instructional programsfor students at beginning through eighth-grade reading levels.Students reading at grade level focus primarily on vocabulary developmentand advanced comprehension strategies. Students reading below grade levelreceive instruction that focuses on their particular needs, such as fluency, vocabulary development, or word analysis, using narrative and expository textat their instructional reading level. As students acquire new skills, they moverapidly through multiple levels in each school year. The extensive use ofcooperative learning and regular assessments that involve students in settingindividual and team goals motivate them to learn.Success for All Scope and Sequence491

Middle schoolstudents reading at a first-grade reading level have not mastered all the word-recognition skills that theyneed to decode text and build meaning. The goal of these units is to give students the help they need tosuccessfully decode unfamiliar words, use basic strategies, and achieve adequate fluency to move to thenext level of instruction as quickly as possible.Unit TitleOn the RoadBig Cats of AfricaA Trip to MexicoA Visit With FishKayaking to the SeaIn the OutbackCycle Race in FranceLife on a RanchAuto Show in JapanStuck in GooTo the North PoleTexas Balloon RaceSurfing in South AfricaQuiz Show in //ea//ie//ai//ay//oa/soft /g/ soft /c/ /oi//ou//ow/(cow)/ew//ue/old/ui//oo/ //wr/Success for All Scope and Sequence66 18Success for All Scope and good)/wh//b//d//pl//a e/-edalkshort /e/ /u/short /o//i//cl//fl//i e//o e//a//gl//u e//nd//nk//nt//ng/
