COMMITTEES:Reflection on Divine MercyThis Sunday is known as the Divine Mercy Sunday. Hence, letme give you, here below, a brief reflection from what hasbeen suggested by the U.S. Conference of the CatholicBishops (USCCB).From Creation, God has revealed his nature as love itself, inSacred Scripture and most perfectly in the life, Passion, deathand Resurrection of his Son, Jesus. Saints have also bornewitness to God’s unfathomable love, e.g., in the writings ofAugustine, Aquinas, Catherine of Siena, Francis of Assisi,Margaret Mary Alacoque and Therese of Lisieux. In his second encyclical, Rich in Mercy, Pope Saint John PaulII offers an extended meditation on the mystery of God’smercy, which he calls “the greatest of the attributes andperfections of God” (Dives in Misericordia, 13). He returned tothis theme throughout his pontificate:“As a gift to humanity, which sometimes seemsbewildered and overwhelmed by the power of evil, selfishness, and fear, the Risen Lord offers His lovethat pardons, reconciles, and reopens hearts to love. Itis a love that converts hearts and gives peace. Howmuch the world needs to understand and accept DivineMercy!Lord, who reveals the Father’s love by Your death andResurrection, we believe in You and confidently repeatto You today: Jesus, I trust in You, have mercy uponus and upon the whole world. (St. Pope John PaulII, Regina Caeli message prepared for Divine MercySunday, April 3, 2005).What is mercy if not the boundless love of God, whoconfronted with human sin, restrains the sentiment ofsevere justice and, allowing Himself to be moved bythe wretchedness of His creatures, spurs Himself tothe total gift of self, in the Son’s cross ? (St. PopeJohn Paul II, Regina Caeli message, April 10, 1994).Pope Benedict XVI called St. John Paul II “a great apostle ofDivine Mercy” and echoed his predecessor’s thoughts:Mercy is the central nucleus of the Gospel message; itis the very name of God, the Face with which herevealed himself in the Old Covenant and fully in JesusChrist, the incarnation of creative and redemptiveLove. May this merciful love also shine on the face ofthe Church and show itself through the sacraments, inparticular that of Reconciliation, and in works ofcharity, both communitarian and individual. May allthat the Church says and does manifest the mercy Godfeels for man.(Pope Benedict XVI, ReginaCaeli address, March 30, 2008).May The Lord renew the World with His Mercy.Fr.
