The City of Saskatooncame through with enough binsfor all the pumpkins, so the cleanup was the fastest ever! Thank youeveryone who came out and helpedwith this event.Of course on the heels of Pumpkinsin the Park was the November 18thfundraiser for the Albert RecreationUnit. Richelle Fairburn, our capableSocial Coordinator, led a team ofvolunteers in the creation of a twoband party at the Cosmo SeniorCentre. What a great evening andit brought the NCA and the AlbertRec Unit fundraisers just that muchcloser to getting the park projectstarted. For everyone that came outand supported this event, thankyou. FNaces&amesAbout your NCA ExecutiveThe NCA Executive is an active group of Nutana residents who volunteer their timeand energy to improve their community. Members come from diverse backgroundsand take on various roles in the Association such as assisting with community events, organizing programs, liasoning with the City and communicating what is happening inthe neighbourhood. In this ongoing series, we will profile our executive members andcommittees and how they work to make Nutana the best place to live.Catherine Folkerson PresidentThe NCA Civics CommitteeIn 1983 I left Ontario and headed west. It tookone year in Saskatoon for me to find my way toNutana and once I did, I stayed. My husbandand I met in Nutana and are committed to a lifein this community. The University communitywas where I spentmy working hours, usually in the College of Agriculture.I am a graduateof the College ofAgriculture and theEdwards School ofBusiness. The Committee reviews the proceedings of City Council and of the five City of Saskatoon Standing PolicyCommittees:The NCA garden bythe Roastery is mypersonal favoriteprogram of ourassociation. Whodoesn’t like growing their own greenbeans and tomatoesand lettuce? Growing up my father had a marketgarden and five children as assistants and so beingable to practice these skills in an urban setting issomething I am truly thankful for. Hats off to thegarden coordinators of NCA.It is a pleasure to be a part of NCA. What a greatgroup of volunteers this association attracts! Ourcommunity is a better community because of theircommitment.Get Involved!Any Nutana Resident can be involved in the the Nutana Community Association. We meet at 7:00 pm on the first Wednesday of eachmonth September through June at the Nutana Collegiate Library. Meetings are open and anyone iswelcome to attend and to help out with NCA eventssuch as Pumpkins in the Park, Winterlude and SweepInto Spring. The Civics Committee is composed of two members ofthe NCA Board (currently Robert Clipperton and Lindsay Herman) assisted by a small group of communityminded Nutana residents who help monitor the activityof City Hall as it impacts our neighbourhood.1) Governance and Priorities2) Finance3) Transportation4) Environment, Utilities & Corporate Services5) Planning, Development and Community Services. Most often, the Civics Committee avoids taking a position on specific instances but puts its efforts into assuringthat appropriate levels of community consultation takeplace. Topics taken up in the more recent past by theNCA through the Civics Committee include implementation of the Nutana Neighbourhood Traffic Review, development of new infill guidelines and the deterioratedcondition of neighbourhood sidewalks.Along with the civics representatives of other Ward Sixcommunity associations members of the Civics Committee participate in quarterly meetings with our WardCouncillor. This allows community associations to exchange ideas on common issues and provide for two waycommunication with our councillor, formerly CharlieClark and currently Cynthia Block. To encourage informed participation in last fall’s civicelection, the NCA sponsored an all candidates meetingallowing the seven Ward Six candidates to introducethemselves to residents and to allow residents to posequestions to the aspiring councillors.Nutana residents who have issues that they would liketo bring to the attention of the NCA may address them tothe Civics Committee by e-mailing civics@nutana.ca

We will do our best tomake our little park a big success! Here are some updates on the Big Plans/Albert RecUnit park development: The City of Saskatoon/Canada 150 portion of thepark rejuvenation is to remove and replace all theplay equipment in the park. Final plans are beingprepared, and while the timeline is not finalized, tender should be early 2017 with constructionlikely during spring of the same year. (All Canada150 projects need to be completed by 2018) Final choices for the new play equipment are stillbeing negotiated with the City, and should befinalized in the next few weeks. While we havemade the community’s preferences known, thefinal decisions rest with the City. To lessen the disruption to park users, we wouldlike to proceed with our portion of the park rejuvenation on a similar timeline as the City’s work. HOWEVER, our fundraising is about 110 000short to accomplish all that we want to do in thepark. Despite this, we feel it is important to beginthe rejuvenation now, although having a smallerbudget means prioritizing items in the park design. It is not an easy process. Our goal is to submit final design plans to the Cityin January 2017. The City departments need toreview and grant approval of the project with afinal nod by CityCouncil. At this stage, finalworking drawings and documents would beprepared by Oxbow Architectureand constructioncould possiblystart in spring2017. Note thatthis is only a tentative schedule. So have you donated yet? Only 100 per squaremetre to get your Good Deed! (All donations receive a tax receipt from the City)Online donations here:https://nutana.ca/big-plans-for-a-small-park/

City Council UpdateCynthia Block, Ward 6 CouncillorSeason’s Greetings Nutana Residents –Thank you for the opportunity to connect on someimportant civic issues for your neighbourhood. With nearly two months on the job, it has been awhirlwind of activity but I am truly enjoying everyminute. It is an honour to represent you, and Iam looking forward to what we can accomplishtogether over the next four years.Congratulations to the organizers of the Big Night2 for a Little Park. What a great fundraiser and afantastic effort to advance the revitalization plan. This project and several others will take centrestage over the next year. The 2017 City Budget willprovide opportunities for many communities inWard 6. With new federal infrastructure moneyavailable, there is a plan to augment the sidewalkprogram, improve public transit and beginthe process of eliminating lead pipes over thenext decade. In addition, the City is cancellingits asphalt repair program for sidewalks. Thismeans all new repairs will include full concretereplacement. While this comes at a higher cost, the federal infrastructure money combined withlower tendering prices for the road programmean this can be accomplished without a taxincrease. Of course, it will still take years beforeall neighbourhoods see the benefit of this change, but it’s a start.Nutana will see an updated report on its TrafficReview implementation plan in 2017. Thanks tothose who have reached out to keep me in theloop on your ideas and concerns. In addition totraffic and sidewalks, I know we have work to doaround a number of other issues including infilldevelopment.
