Georgia Department of EducationCOURSE NUMBERING EXPLANATIONThe course numbers are related to the national Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP)index.Assigning correct numbers as students register for courses ensures that accurate data are gatheredby the Department. Such data identify the number and program designations of students involvedin all state-funded courses.International Baccalaureate (IB) courses and course codes may only be used by authorized IBWorld Schools.The process for assigning a number to subjects or courses is as follows:(1)Determine the needs of each student. This process will involve knowing whether thestudent is to participate in special programs with specific guidelines.(2)Identify the appropriate subject or course for each student. The course numbers precedethe title of the subject or course. There must be a valid number assigned as prescribed inthis rule for each course that a student takes for which the local school systems receivedstate funding.(3)Select numbers from the subject and course list. The whole number identifies the discipline or content area. The first digit to the right of the decimal identifies the type of instruction foreach student in a particular subject or course. Local school systems determine theappropriate number for the first digit to the right of the decimal using the optionsstated on this guidance. In the following list, a 0 is placed as the first digit to theright of the decimal. Exceptions are a 3 designating a Virtual High School course,a 4 designating a one hour lab course, and a 5 designating a two hour lab course. The second, third, and fourth digits to the right of the decimal are static. Thefifth digit to the right of the decimal will generally be a zero. However, localschool systems should follow the guidelines on this section to determine if otherdigits should be used. The sixth and seventh digits to the right of the decimal are for local schoolsystem use.A total of nine digits (a two digit whole number and seven digits to the right of the decimal) mustbe given for each course. The following list includes seven of the nine required digits. X X X X X]STATE USE[X X]LOCAL USEThe two digit whole number to the LEFT of the decimal designates the main subject area field.EXAMPLES: 27.0000000 MATHEMATICS49.0000000 MANUFACTURING SCIENCES53.0000000 MUSICThe first numerical digit to the RIGHT of the decimal identifies the type of instruction.EXAMPLE: 53.0000000 MUSIC, GENERAL CLASSROOM INSTRUCTIONThe options for the first numerical digit to the right of the decimal are explained below.XX.00 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONA 0 as the first numerical digit to the right of the decimal indicates general instruction.A 0 means that the course is taught in a traditional or regular classroom setting.XX.11 REMEDIAL INSTRUCTIONA 1 as the first numerical digit to the right of the decimal indicates that the student taking thecourse is identified as a participant in either the grades K-5 Early Intervention Program (EIP) orthe grades 6-12 Remedial Education Program (REP). State Board of Education Rules 160-4-2.17 EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM (EIP) and 160-4-5-.01 REMEDIAL EDUCATIONPROGRAM identifies the eligibility requirements for students receiving EIP or REP instruction.The EIP provides an intervention program for students in grades K-5 who are at risk of notreaching or maintaining academic grade level in English language arts and/or mathematics inKindergarten and in reading and/or math for grades 1-5. The REP provides a remedialeducational program designed for students in grades 6-12 who have identified deficiencies inreading, writing, and/or math. Consequently, a 1 in the first numerical digit to the right of thedecimal is valid ONLY for EIP or REP served students at these grade levels.XX.22 GIFTED INSTRUCTIONA 2 as the first numerical digit to the right of the decimal indicates that the student taking thecourse is identified as a participant in Gifted Education. State Board of Education Rule 160-4-2.38 Educational Program for Gifted Students describes the requirements necessary for studentsparticipating in the Gifted Education program. Courses for gifted students include mathematics,science, English language arts, social studies, foreign languages, fine arts, and technology/careereducation. The approved delivery models for Gifted Education services are described in theDepartment of Education Resource Manual for Gifted Education Programs.Georgia Department of EducationFebruary 20, 2021, Page 5 of 89
Georgia Department of EducationXX.33 DISTANCE LEARNINGA 3 as the first numerical digit to the right of the decimal indicates that students taking the courseare doing so in a distance learning classroom setting. Distance learning can be throughinteractive telecommunications, virtual high school on-line courses, or any other setting when theinstruction is delivered and received through electronic communication means. The courseslisted with a 3 in the first digit to the right of the decimal are Virtual School courses.XX.4 or XX.54 or 5 ONE HOUR LABA 4 or 5 as the first numerical digit to the right of the decimal indicates that students are takingthe course as a one-hour lab class. Systems may extend this instruction to two periods/credits byusing the digits reserved for local system use.Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) labs are state-approved CTAEcourses. Descriptions for CTAE labs are found in FTE Program Codes and Weights. CTAE labsinclude the following criteria:a. Replacement costs of equipment and materials are at least 50 percent higher than thoseneeded for a general education class except for cooperative work-study labs.b. Students spend a minimum of 25 percent of the instructional time in “hands-on” activities.c. Students are enrolled in grades 9-12.XX.77 WORK-BASED LEARNING (WBL)The system for assigning course numbers to students enrolled in Work-Based Learning is aunique coding process applicable to these numbers only. Other course numbering conventions,including the previous descriptions for coding of the first digit past the decimal in other coursenumbers, should not be applied to these work-based learning numbers. The following chartindicates the numbering convention that applies only to these work-based learning numbers.Criteria for placement of students in these courses may be found in the Standards and Guidelinesavailable from the Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education Division.A 7 as the first numerical digit to the right of the decimal indicates that students taking the courseare participating in a work-based learning program. State Board of Education Rule 160-4-3-.13CAREER RELATED EDUCATION describes the requirements necessary for students toparticipate in the work-based learning program that include only students in grades 10-12.Work-based programs may be designated in each CTAE pathway using the chart below. Thefive digits to the right of the decimal used in conjunction with the 7 will be applied to the twodigit whole number that indicates the Program CIP code number. Students are taught by a certified general education teacher and also receivethe identified IEP support by the appropriately certified special education personnel. Students inthese classes are earning Carnegie unit credit.Note: When the .8 and .9 are used with a course code for a student with a significant cognitivedisability participating in the Georgia Alternate Assessment (GAA), the instruction will align tothe standards for that course and provide access to those standards. Instruction must embed IEPobjectives but will not necessarily address all the standards for the course or cover the samedepth and breadth.Note: In accordance with guidance issued by the United States Department of Education, Officefor Civil Rights on October 17, 2008, transcripts may not contain information disclosingstudents’ disabilities. Such instances would require a local policy that mustbe met in order for a student to receive credit without enrolling in the course. (For example, astudent whose native language is not English could be given one or two Carnegie unit credits forforeign language if he/she can demonstrate proficiency in that language.
