Contr REVISED 2.063/1/063:43 PMPage 5Why Grace Ice & Water Shield is the Best You Can BuyWHAT MAKESIT BETTER?Best Adhesion to the Roof DeckThe time-tested rubberized asphalt formulation in GraceIce & Water Shield provides superior initial and longterm adhesion without primer or nails. This strong bondhelps ensure the user of a watertight installation.LightweightGrace Ice & Water Shield is easy to handle. Can be Left Exposed LongerGrace Ice & Water Shield can be left exposed for up to a full 30 days and caneven be used as a temporary roof.Won’t TelegraphUnlike many thicker membrane underlayments with laps that are visiblethrough roof coverings, Grace Ice & Water Shield remains invisible.Forms Superior LapsUnlike many fully-adhered membrane underlayments,Grace Ice & Water Shield requires NO special treatmentof the laps, making it easy to get a watertight seal.Superior Tear ResistanceGrace Ice & Water Shield uses an extremely strong, cross-laminated,high density polyethylene carrier sheet that offers superior tear resistance, but is easy to cut and detail.Highest Quality Seal Around Roofing FastenersGrace Ice & Water Shield helps deliver premium roof leak protectionvia an aggressive, rubberized asphalt formulation that seals aroundroof covering fasteners.RIPCORD Split Release on Demand5Most Comprehensive UL Fire Classifications and RatingsGrace Ice & Water Shield is UL classified under all classified shingxles foruse in detail areas or for full roof coverage. Grace Ice & Water Shield is theonly membrane underlayment with a fire rating for internal fire resistance. This thin cord (slightly embedded in the rubberized asphalt) allows thesplitting of the release paper in half, making installations in detailedareas (chimneys, valleys, etc.) quick and easy.Longest Performance HistoryRe-RoofableTHE Name Brand in UnderlaymentsUnlike some granular surfaced membranes, Grace Ice & Water Shieldwill not adhere to the underside of the exposed roof covering and canbe applied over Grace underlayments (except over Grace Basik) inretrofit applications, making re-roofing easier, less costly, moredurable and environmentally friendly.Unique Non-Granular Slip ResistanceOffers superior foot traction without the granules or grit that inhibitwatertight laps.Grace Ice & Water Shield offers the longest performance history and thehighest confidence of performance for over 25 years.Grace Ice & Water Shield is a registered trademark of Grace ConstructionProducts. Don’t be fooled by imitators.GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD IS AVAILABLE ONLY FROM GRACECONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS.6

Contr REVISED 2.063/1/063:43 PMPage 7How to Apply Grace Ice & Water ShieldGrace Ice & Water Shield roofing underlayment is a very user-friendly product. Thereare two easy ways to install it. We call the first The Conventional Method and thesecond The Back-Roll Method.THE CONVENTIONAL METHODRIPCORD Split Release on DemandUse for ease of installation in detailed areas (dormers, valleys, chimneys, etc.)1Step One:2Step Two:3Step Three:Locate RIPCORD at centerof membrane.Contractors tell us that it’s easy to install Grace Ice & Water Shield. ContractorBob Stransky sums it up this way: “Aligning Grace Ice & Water Shield before pullingout the release paper makes an easy installation, free of wrinkles.this method issimple, fast and fool proof.“1237Step One:Cut the membraneinto 3-5 m (10-15 ft.)lengths andre-roll loosely.Peel back 300-600mm (1-2 ft.) ofrelease liner, align membrane.Create a notch in releasepaper at mid-center. Pullback release paper andextract RIPCORD.Pull RIPCORD, splittingrelease paper in half.Step Two:Peel the releaseliner from themembrane.Press themembrane inplace with heavyhand pressure.Step Three:Side laps must bea minimum of90 mm (3.5 in.) andend laps a minimumof 150 mm (6 in.).RIPCORD4For Valleys:Roll out membrane; cut torequired lengths. ExtractRIPCORD following instructionsabove. Position membrane atstart up area aligning center onvalley. Remove one side of therelease paper. Press membraneinto place with hand smoothingoutward towards edge. Repeaton other side of valley.8

Contr REVISED 2.063/1/063:43 PMPage 9How to Apply Grace Ice & Water ShieldTHE BACK-ROLL METHODSome contractors prefer the back-roll method for applying Grace Ice & Water Shield. As contractor Bob Stransky explains, “The back-roll technique can be faster than theconventional method since you can lay down the membrane in just a few minutes! What’smore, you can get the hang of the back-roll technique in no time – it’s simple and it laysthe membrane down evenly.” Here’s how the back-roll method works:91Step One:2Step Two:3Step Three:Start by unrollinga 3-5 m (10-15 ft.)piece of membrane, leaving the releaseliner in place. Alignthe membrane androll in the intendeddirection of the membrane application.Carefully cut therelease liner on topof the roll in thecross direction, being careful not tocut the membrane.Peel back about150 mm (6 in.) of therelease liner in theopposite directionof the intendedmembrane application, exposing theblack adhesive.4Step Four:5Step Five:6Step Six:Hold the releaseliner with onehand and pull theroll along the deckwith the releaseliner, leaving theapplied membranebehind.Stop frequently topress the membrane in placewith heavy handpressure, smoothing the membranetoward the outeredge. When finishedwith the roll, goback and removethe remainingrelease liner.Smooth tothe edge.10

Contr REVISED 2.063/1/063:43 PMPage 11Precautions and LimitationsPRECAUTIONSAND LIMITATIONSSlippery when wet or covered by frost.Consistent with good roofing practice, always wear fallprotection when working on a roof deck.Release liners are slippery. Remove from work areaimmediately after membrane application.Do not leave permanently exposed to sunlight. Maximumrecommended exposure guidelines for Grace Ice & WaterShield is 30 days, Grace Select is 30 days, Grace Basik is30 days, and Grace Ultra is 60 days.Do not fold over the roof edge unless the edge is protected by a drip edge, gutter or other flashing material.Do not install on the chamfered edges of wood plank.Do not install directly on old roof coverings (refer toTechnical Letter 5).Certain product applications are prohibited in hot desertareas in the Southwestern United States. Check withyour Grace representative.11Check with the manufacturer of the metal roofing systemfor any special requirements. Do not install Grace underlayments directly under roof coverings which areespecially sensitive to corrosion (such as zinc) withoutproviding proper ventilation.Do not install Grace Ice & Water Shield, Grace Select orGrace Basik under copper, Cor-Ten , or zinc metal roofingin high altitude climates. These roofs can reachextremely high temperatures due to the low reflectivity, high absorption, and high conductivity of these metals. UseGrace Ultra for these roof types in this climate. Check withyour Grace representative.Provide proper roof insulation and ventilation to help reduceexcessive ice dams and to minimize interior condensation.Grace underlayments are air and vapor barriers.Repair holes, fishmouths, tears and damage with a roundpatch of membrane extending past the damaged area, 150mm (6 in.) in all directions. If fasteners are removed leavingholes in the membrane, it MUST be patched. The membrane may not self-seal open fastener penetrations.Do not install fasteners through the membraneover unsupported areas of the structural deck, such as overthe joints between adjacent structural panels.Due to its slight asphaltic odor, do not apply wheremembrane is exposed to interior living spaces.Grace Ice & Water Shield, Grace Select and Grace Basikare not compatible with EPDM; use Grace Ultra for tie-ins(refer to Technical Letter 5).Grace underlayments are not compatible with polysulfides, flexible PVC, high concentrations of resin (pitch), and othersubstances (for more information refer to Technical Letter 5).SAFETY, STORAGE, AND HANDLINGGrace underlayments and accessory products must be handledproperly. Read all product labels and Material Safety DataSheets (MSDS) for proper handling and disposal. Deliver allmaterials in manufacturer’s unopened packages and store allmaterials under cover. Do not double stack palletized material.12

Contr REVISED 2.063/1/063:43 PMPage 13Tips from the Pros. you’ll save time and moneyDO’SDON’TSBob Stransky, Executive Supervisor,Doc Gelso Construction, Inc.Jim Kenyon, Project Manager and Superintendent,Vermont Roofing Co., Inc.“You should fill in any large gaps on the plywood deckbefore you install Grace Ice & Water Shield. If you don’thave 100% backing for the membrane, nails or fastenerscan go into a gap (air void) and cause leaks. When you have a steep roof application, it is oftenfaster and easier to apply the membrane vertically thanside-to-side. Run your first piece of Grace Ice & WaterShield across the bottom edge of the roof and then runyour strips up and down the roof, with one installer onthe top of the roof and one on the bottom.”Frank Lawson Jr., President,The Lawson Roofing Co., Inc. and Past President of the NRCA“For extra protection against ice dams and water leaks, useGrace Ice & Water Shield with flashing when you’reinstalling it in valleys. If your jobs involve high-quality tile, slate and asphaltshingling systems with long-term life-cycle expectations, you should definitely use Grace Ice & Water Shield.”Jim Kenyon, Project Manager and Superintendent,Vermont Roofing Co., Inc.“In parts of the country where severe ice dams and winddriven rain can cause leaks, use two layers of Grace Ice& Water Shield around the eaves – one directly on top ofthe other with the flashing or perimeter metal inbetween the two membrane layers.”13Jim Rothermel, Supervisor,Cormack Builders“Make sure you take advantage of using the RIPCORD splitrelease feature to realize the full advantage of achievingthe perfect fit, especially in the valleys. RIPCORDcertainly allows for a more efficient, quicker install.”“Don’t take chances with an untested underlayment. Call-backs are expensive. You don’t want tohave to go up there twice.”Ted Toppan, President,Quick Build Co., Inc.“I tell my men, ‘Never lay down the first roll ofGrace Ice & Water Shield without snapping a(chalk) line first.’ Set the reference for the first rollso you can keep a perspective. Once the first rollis down, you can use the lines printed on the product to keep the roof line true.Avoid creating leaks when you’re cutting a pipestack for a plumber. First, put down a 2 ft. x 2 ft.square of Grace Ice & Water Shield before you cutthe hole in the roof. Drill the hole right through theGrace Ice & Water Shield andthe plywood. When you’re readyto poke the pipe through the rubber pipe flange and fasten theflange to the roof deck, the GraceIce & Water Shield patch willimmediately seal the nail holes.”14

All Life is Weak and relies upon the Grace of God to sustain it. We see this Grace in how a mother sustains a Weak child. Grace is the noun. Love is the verb, which means: showing Grace. Lets see how we find Grace in the 3-Square. Once again, the short line on the left is thin, not thick like the bar at the top.
