November 28, 1961 in MexicoCity, Distrito Federal, Mexico) studied philosophy at theNational Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) andfilmmaking at CUEC (Centro Universitario de EstudiosCinematográficos), a school within the same university.Speaking on the autobiographical nature of his latest,Oscar-winning film Roma (2018), Cuarón says: “[JorgeLuis] Borges talks about how memory is an opaque, shattered mirror, but I see it more as a crack in the wall. The crack is whatever pain happened in the past. We tendto put several coats of paint over it, trying to cover thatcrack. But it’s still there.” As a film director (17 credits),Cuarón has managed to carve out a career as both acritically acclaimed auteur, often writing (17 credits),editing (10 credits), producing (11 credits), and doingcinematography (11 credits) for films he directs and as askilled helmsman for ambitious, commercially successfuladaptations.
