4Pastor’s Column .Saint Mother Teresa of Calcuta - "Not all of us can do greatthings. But we can do small things with great love." - MotherTeresa Two years ago on September 4, 2016 Pope Franciscanonized Mother Teresa as a saint. Her feast day is celebrated this week on September 5th. It is not often that in one's lifetime that someone we had learned so much about, and likelyadmired from a distance, is canonized. Most of the saints weknow are from centuries ago, but in Mother Teresa we heardspeak, saw her on our TVs, read about her and now she is asaint from our own time. This small lady of all about 5 feet, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in Albania on August 26, 1910,was such a strong advocate for the poorest of the poor. As thequote above reflects she also had a way of keeping things inperspective yet also had her struggles of faith. The followingprayer is attributed to her and it too I believe tries to show ushow to keep life in perspective. It is appropriately titled.Do it AnywayPeople are often unreasonable, irrational, and selfcentered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithfulfriends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere people may deceiveyou. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroyovernight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Dogood anyway.Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It wasnever between you and them anyway.Labor Day - September 3rd - On Labor Day there will be oneMass at 7 a.m. meaning there will be no Mass at 5 p.m. and theparish offices will be closed.Parish Family Mass and Picnic - Our Family Mass and Picnicwill be held on Saturday, September 8th. The 4 p.m. Mass thatevening will be held outside on the Parish Green with the Picnicfollowing. Plenty to do for the kids and loads of food. Remember to bring a lawn chair! The Committee could still use someextra hands to help everything run smoothly and be enjoyablefor everyone. See page 8 for how you can help. Whisper alittle prayer all week for good weather too!! Hope to see youthere!!Berlin Fair - Do not be caught off guard by the earlier dates forthe Berlin Fair which runs from Sept. 13 - 16th. I will be celebrating Mass on Sunday morning, Sept. 16th at 9:15 a.m. at theFair. Our regular Mass schedule will be held here at SacredHeart and St. Paul. Volunteers are still needed so check outpage 8 for how you can pitch in.Archbishop’s Listening Session - Thanks to Nancy Timbrell andEd Janik who chaired the Archdiocesan Listening Session on Tuesday, August 14th. Nancy and Ed said they thought the evening wentwell with 31 parishioners in attendance. There was a lot going onthat night so I apologize for those who had trouble with parking.Nancy and Ed are preparing a summary of the comments from theevening and we will be sharing that with all of you in the next week. The next step in this process are for representatives from the parishto join with representatives from the other parishes in our Deaneryfor a similar evening on October 19 at a location the archdiocesehas not yet chosen. More to follow.Men’s Group - This past Sunday evening the Men’s Group heldtheir picnic on the Parish Green. The weather was much betterthan two weeks ago, a couple days in advance of this weeks hotand humid stickiness. This was a nice gathering of these men whoare trying to grow in their faith by sharing their faith experiences witheach other. They are supported by their faith and each other in asociety where it is not always easy to talk about such things if it isever easy for guys to do so! They meet twice a month for breakfaston a Wednesday and Friday and once a month on a Sunday evening. You can come to one or more of those meetings. If you areinterested in joining them contact one of these guys for more information. Jim Newman - jnewman@peakpointcap.com, Bob Fischer Fischerwoodworking@snet.net, Tony DeRito - tonyd433@gmail.com, and Corey Whiteside - coreyswhiteside@att.net.Garden Club- Since I have been here and have been taking littlewalks around to get know the property one cannot help be impressed with how nice every thing looks. God has been doing hispart this summer with plenty of rain, but everything is nicely planted, trimmed, weeded, and just taken care of so well. I understand thata group was responsible for much work on the front end, but as weall know, it is one thing to get in the ground, it is another thing totake care of for the entire growing season. One morning recentlywhile going out to pick up the morning paper there was a memberdoing weeding. So I offer a special thanks to the Garden Club forall that they do. Kathy Ginotti heads up this group of volunteers soif you have a green thumb and are willing to help, contact her at 860-828-1996 or call the Parish Office.Final Thoughts - Some Yankee fans tell me they have been a littlemiffed about not being recognized in this space. Well as I write thistheir hope has been rejuvenated a bit after they feasted on my poorO’s and the Bosox were swept by the team without any startingpitchers, the TB Rays. I suspect Sox fans of old might be getting alittle bit of that feeling from Septembers of long ago. I still remember a Labor Day DH in 1974 that the Orioles swept from the RedSox both by 1-0 scores. For the Orioles it was part of five shutoutsin a row and coming back to win the division by 2 games after being8 games behind on August 29. The team leading the division ofcourse was the Red Sox. They finished in 3rd place 7 games out. What a September that was! Enjoy the holiday and have a blessedweek. - Fr. Joe
