6REThe Carmel Pine ConeApril 9, 2021Saying goodbye to one of the sweetest ladies I’ve ever knownAS WE become protected by the vaccines, we shouldnot forget the trauma the coronavirus pandemic is leavingin its wake. The number of deaths is staggering. Thousandsof businesses will never reopen. A school year has beenlost. And long-term damage has been done to the health ofmany who became seriously ill with Covid-19.A stat that can get overlooked is the effect the virushad on senior citizens who lived alone, even if they nevercaught it. Disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, andfires can bring us together. The coronavirus drove us apart.I met Gloria Valentino four years ago. She wrote to tellme how much she enjoyed one of my columns. An emailcorrespondence resulted. Eventually, we met for coffee, and a friendship developed.Time and treasureGloria moved here from Chicago 10 years ago. She enjoyed life with friends and basked in the Monterey Peninsla’s beauty. While in Chicago, she spent much of herlife helping people, giving her time and treasure to anyonewho was lucky enough to know her. She worked as a lifecoach for the Salvation Army, where she helped paroleesintegrate back into society. She taught literacy and writingScenic ViewsBy JERRY GERVASEclasses that helped them get new jobs or reclaim jobs theyhad before being incarcerated. She never married but wasthe favorite aunt of many nieces and nephews. She augmented her small pension and Social Securityby working in the gift shop at the Carmel Mission. Anyone who visited the gift shop would have been charmed byher graciousness, and her ability to make them feel wel-come. Children, especially, came under her spell. Friendsdescribed her as the Mission’s Pied Piper, because littlekids flocked to her, wrapping themselves around her legsor waiting to receive a hug.Her good friend, Irene Long, told me about Gloria’sstrong Catholic faith. “God was on her speed dial and answered her prayers for others,” she said.A steady declineSadly, the pandemic had a catastrophic effect on Gloria. The lockdowns ended her job at the gift shop. Socialdistancing forced her to become so isolated, it borderedon solitary confinement. One of her nieces, Roseann Adams, said it was as if Gloria’s life-force was depleted frommonths of isolation, even as her other health problemscaused a steady physical decline.I learned all this from Roseann and her brother, VitoSee GERVASE page 10RE7 Sylvan Place, Monterey 3 Bed & 3 Bath 7SylvanPlace.com 2,100,000This is a beautifully built, custom, unique 2900 square foot “soft” contemporary on an upscale cul de sacBobbie 10 DRE#01136716ƁăƁî { ŸåŅ ĜŸƋ Ø aŅĹƋåųåƼƗƁĊƁŏ ĜŸƋ %åĬ ŅųŅ {Ĭ ÏåØ Ņųų Ĭ Úå Ĝåųų Ċ åÚŸØ Ċţă ƋĘŸ Î âƑØƆŀăØljljlj Î ƁăƁî{ ŸåŅ ĜŸƋ ţÏŅĵƑ åÚŸØ Ƒ ƋĘŸ Î âŏØƗŀljØljljlj Î ĜŸƋ %åĬ ŅųŅţÏŅĵŏĊŏ ĬåÚŅĹĜ eƴåĹƚåØ { ÏĜĀÏ :ųŅƴåŏĊƗ ŏŀƋĘ ƋųååƋØ { ÏĜĀÏ :ųŅƴåŏ åÚØ ŏ ƋĘ Î âŀŀăØljljlj Î ŏĊŏ ĬåÚŅĹĜ eƴåţÏŅĵŏ åÚØ ŏ ƋĘ Î âîŀŀØljljlj Î ŏĊƗŏŀƋĘ ƋųååƋţÏŅĵProducing Remarkable Results.Ben ZollerîƑŏţăŀăţljƆƁƆ åĹÄaŅĹƋåųåƼ Ņ ŸƋ å ĬƋƼţÏŅĵ Î åĹ ŅĬĬåų{ųŅŞåųƋĜåŸţÏŅĵ% )ńljŏŀƆƁîŏlj

She was so ill, it wasimpossible for her to live alone. She was moved to an assisted living facility, but couldn’t stay there because shedidn’t qualify for skilled nursing. She was turned down forMedicaid because she had money in her checking accountthat, ironically, her nieces and nephews sent to help her.Irene Long and Gloria’s friends stepped in to help. Irenetook Gloria into her home, where she and friends cared forher until she needed full-time professional care. Grace listens and understands her client’s needs andmatches them with the right property. She utilizes cutting edge technology, ongoing education, top notch marketing, and superior customer service toconsistently rank among the top 7% of Monterey County Realtors. As a devoted wife and mother of three, Grace understands the importanceof commitment. She gives back to the community, investing in the future bymaking sure that children are given every chance to succeed. As an accomplished business professional and an avid volunteer, Grace strivesto be your real estate agent for life.An important factorGloria’s story illustrates the negative impact Covid-19had on those who have been forced to live in isolation andare suffering from non-virus illnesses.Guy Winch, Ph.D., writing in the March issue of Psychology Today, said, “loneliness is an important risk factorin any health crisis because it puts our bodies into a stateof stress which can impact the functioning of our immunesystems — and the poorer our immune systems function, the less effective they are in fighting off diseases.”Dr. John Cacioppo, a psychology professor at the University of Chicago, studied the effects of loneliness for twodecades. He concluded that, “love and social connectionsare what really matter in life.” He equated loneliness witha type of hunger, noting that “establishing social connections is essential for human survival.” Yes, love and socialconnections are what really matter in life — keeping “intouch.”The restrictions imposed upon us by experts took awaythe “touch” part of “in touch” — no shaking hands, nohugging, no social gatherings, wear masks, build barriers, stop being your brother’s keeper.Roseann’s email about Gloria’s death reached me inthe middle of Easter week, which this year coincided withPassover. I believe the theme of that week, for both faiths,is freedom. For Jews, the freedom of bondage from Egyptian tyranny. For Christians, the freedom from sin anddeath. Talmudic and Biblical scholars may blanch at mysimplistic view-from-the-pew theology, but I know thatGloria is free now.Gloria Valentino was one of the sweetest people I knew.Poet Thomas Gray wrote:Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,And waste its sweetness on the desert air.I believe Gloria knows her sweetness was not wasted.Hers was a life well lived, and deeply appreciated. Requiescat in pace, sweet friend.Contact Jerry at jerrygervase@yahoo.com.
