What CDL do I need?CLASS B—Heavy straight vehicle witha Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR),actual gross weight or registeredweight of over 26,000 pounds.The commercial driver license (CDL)you need depends on the class ofcommercial motor vehicle (CMV) youplan to drive. Who is exempt from CDLlicensing in Wisconsin?16 or more passengers must have aCDL with proper endorsements.Federal law allows States the optionto waive certain kinds of drivers fromthe requirement to obtain a CDL.In Wisconsin, the following driversare not required to hold a CDL: Firefighters and rescue squadmembers are not required to holda CDL to drive properly equippedemergency or fire fighting vehicles.However, you may be required toobtain a CDL if you have a Wisconsindriver license and operate a firefighting vehicle in another State. Back-up (substitute or replacement)snowplow drivers (includessnow or ice removal by plowing,salting or sanding) for local units ofgovernment (defined as a county, city,village, town, school district, countyutility district, sanitary district,metropolitan sewage district, or otherpublic body created by or pursuant tostate law) are not required to hold aCDL if they meet all of the following: Recreational vehicle operators(owned or leased motor home,fifth wheel mobile home ortouring mobile home, providedit isn’t longer than 45 feet) notengaged in commercial activityare not required to hold a CDL. A farmer, the farmer’s familymembers, and/or the farmer’semployees are not required to holda CDL to drive a commercial motorvehicle owned or leased by the farmer,provided the vehicle is not used in‘for hire’ carriage, is transportingfarm supplies, produce or machineryto or from the farm and is within150 miles of a farm in Wisconsin,Minnesota or Iowa. The farmsupplies that a farmer may transportwithout obtaining a CDL may includehazardous materials. What are endorsements?Wisconsin issues endorsements for specific types of operation. Endorsementsrequire additional knowledge testing. Some endorsements require skills tests,proof of meeting medical standards or a background check. An endorsement isevidence that you have passed the tests and have the information you need forspecial operation. Certain restrictionswill apply to your operation with a CLP: You must have a qualified drivinginstructor or a person who islicensed to operate that type ofCMV and who is at least 21 yearsold, sitting next to you at all times.DMV authorizes third party examinersto administer CDL skills tests. Contactan authorized third party examiner toschedule your CDL skills test. It is bestto schedule a skills test appointmentwell in advance. Unless you are restricted, you maytransport property in a CMV whileyou are driving with a CLP. Complete WisDOT form MV3588 and identify the type of vehicle operated. Includethe vehicle weight, capacity (trailer weight, number of passengers, tanker size, etc.)and whether the vehicle had air brakes. This information will help a DMV staff persondetermine the appropriate classes and endorsements for a Wisconsin CDL. WisDOT formMV3588 must be signed by your commanding officer or a training officer. You muststill pass the knowledge test(s). You must be a Wisconsin resident to be eligible for thiswaiver. This waiver does not include the skills test for the school bus “S” endorsement.School bus “S” endorsementApplicants for a school bus “S” endorsement must: Be at least 18 years of age.
