UNITBASIC COURSEGERMAN13Notes to the Basic Sentences1Es war ein Gewerkschaftssekretär anwesend. German sometimes uses es toanticipate the true grammatical subject of a sentence.English uses theword there in the same way.The equivalent German and English sentencesare: Ein Gewerkschaftssekretär war anwesend.A union official was there.Notes on Grammar(For Horne Study)A.VERBS.THE PAST TENSE FORMSI. In Unit 12 we were concerned with only two of the devices for talking aboutpast time in German: the PERFECT PHRASE and the construction using aPRESENT TENSE form of the verb plus an expression of time. We noted howeverthat both German and English have a special verb form which is also usedto talk about past time. This is the PAST TENSE form.1. Notice the following examples from the basic sentences of this unit:a) Machten Sie auch Bergtouren?Did you go on hikes in themountains too?b) Wir fuhren nach BadPyrmont. We went to Bad Pyrmont.c) Herr Schumann gab einenBericht.Mr. Schumann gave areport.d) Darüber stand ein Artikelin der Zeitung. There was an article about thatin the paper.e) Die Zeit reichte nichtaus. There wasn't sufficient time. You will see that the PAST TENSE forms in the above sentences can bedivided into two form-classes, verbs which end in -te or -ten andthose which da not have these endings;machtenreichtevs.fuhrengabstand2. The verbs above whose PAST TENSE forms end in -te (er-form)and-ten (wir-form) are WEAK VERBS.It was noted in Unit 12 that WEAK VERBShave PAST PARTICIPLES which end in - . If we list the INFINITIVE, PASTTENSE ich- or er-form, and PAST PARTICIPLE of these verbs together, itwill be seen that the STEM (the INFINITIVE or wir-form of the PRESENTminus the ending -en) in every case is the sam 340DREIHUNDERTVIERZIG

GERMANBASIC COURSEmach-enmach-tege-mach-tUNIT 13reich-enreich-tege-reich-tThese verbs are often called REGULAR VERBS.The PAST TENSE form canalways be predicted from the PAST PARTICIPLE and vice versa, and bothforms can be derived from the PRESENT STEM by adding the endingsindicated. However, it is not possible to tell by looking at theINFINITIVE or PRESENT STEM that a particular verb is a WEAK VERB.Thisfact must be known.3. The verbs above whose PAST TENSE forms do not end in-te or -tenare STRONG VERBS. We noted in Unit 12 that STRONG VERBS have PASTPARTICIPLES ending in - and incorporatingarbitrary changes in theSTEM.If we list the INFINITIVE, PAST TENSE ich- or er-form, andPAST PARTICIPLE of these verbs together, it will be seen that in everycase the PAST TENSE STEM (equivalent to the er-form of the PAST inSTRONG VERBS) is different from the INFINITIVE or PRESENT TENSE nstandge-stand-enNotice that the PAST TENSE STEM sometimes differs from the PARTICIPLESTEM also.Because of the completely arbitrary changes in the form ofthe STEM in these verbs they are often called IRREGULAR VERBS.4. In some verbs the PRESENT STEM, the PAST TENSE STEM and the PARTICIPLESTEM are all different. If these verbs also happen to have two differentforms of the PRESENT STEM we have a total of four different stern forms. In most cases it is only the STEM VOWEL which varies, but there may beother changes as weIl. Here are examples of strong verbs with two, three and four stern trunk-ennehm-ennimm-tnahmge-nomm-enThese forms are not predictable and cannot be derived from the INFINITIVEor PRESENT STEM. They must all be memorized.5.The two form-classes have close parallels in English regular and ERZIGreachvs. givegavereach-edgivenreach-edtaketooktaken341

11.BASIC COURSEGERMANUNIT 13Weak Verbs1. This group comprises the grcat majority of German verbs. The PAST TENSEcan in most cases be derived from the PRESENT STEM simply by adding theendings: -te, -test, -ten, -tet. Note the following examples:Infinitive, or wir-form of the present:mach-enhör-enfreu-enPresent tfreu-tenfreu-tetich, erduwir, sieihrPast Tense:2. Verbs whose PRESENT STEM ends in -Q or - or in a consonant plus- or-n (except the combination of - or - plus - or -n) req irea connecting vowel between stern and ending.Note that these are thesame verbs which require a connecting vowel in the du- and er-formsof the PRESENT:Infinitive, orwir-form of the Present:arbeit-enmeld-enöffn-enPresent n-e-tetPast Tense:ich, erduwir, sieihr3. There are a few IRREGULAR WEAK VERBS which change their stern beforeadding the endings of the PAST TENSE.Note that with the single exception of haben the stern of the PAST TENSE always corresponds to that ofthe PAST PÄRTICIPLE:Infinitive:Past Tense:Past t111. Strong Verbs1. The STRONG VERBS are a little over 100 in number and include a largenumber of very common verbs. We noted above that the PAST TENSE ofthese verbs has a different STEM form from the PRESENT. The PAST TENSEendings are: , -st, -gn, - :ich, erduwir, nahmnahm-stnahm-ennahm-tNote that these endings are not the same as the endings of weak verbsin the PAS TENSE.342DREIHUNDERTZWEIUNDVIERZIG

BASIC COURSEGERMANUNIT 132. In verbs whose PAST STEM ends in -& or -.!:. the connecting vowel - is sometimes inserted before the du-form ending. It is always insertedbefore the ihr-form ending:duihrs and-storstand-e-ststand-e-tdu bat-stihrorbat-e-stbat-e-t3. The PAST TENSE of the verb werden has the following forms:ich, er wurdedu wurdestIV.wir, sie wurdenihr wurdetVerb Listnie following is a complete list of all verbs covered in Units 1 - l The first half contains all WEAK VERBS and gives the INFINITIVE, theer-form of the PAST TENSE, and the PAST PARTICIPLE together with theEnglish meaning of each verb. The second half contains all STRONG VERBSand gives the INFINITIVE, the er-form of the PRESENT TENSE whenever thishas astern vowel change, the er-form of the PAST TENSE, and the PASTPARTICIPLE.WEAK eichenausrichtenprobierteanstellteanarbeitetelegte . andernwanderteist enbedank
