WHO SHOULD ATTEND?CHAIR’S MESSAGE:A Spotlight on Educators and AdvocatesAddiction medicine as a field demands a lot fromeach of us. No longer is it sufficient to be just thecapable diagnostician, pharmacologist, and avidreader of journals. Now, many of us find ourselveseducators and advocates, facing questions we barelyanticipated. How do we educate our patients on therisks of a substance when state laws and elaboratemarketing campaigns tell them otherwise? How dowe motivate our overworked colleagues to undertake the treatment of addictions, and help with the destigmatization ofthe disease? Practicing physicians in primary care, psychiatry, andother specialty fields seeking to build their expertisearound the full spectrum of substance use disorders, their diagnosis, and management. Physicians preparing for the Addiction MedicineBoard Examination requiring an overview of the coreelements of addiction medicine that allows them toidentify areas where they may need additional study. Physicians in the field who want a refresher coursebased on the latest clinical research. Other health care professionals, includingpsychologists, therapists, nurses and drug abusecounselors involved in the treatment of patients withsubstance use disorders. We face an even greater challenge with the inordinate number of patientswho have limited access to care due to poverty, geography, poor publichealth policy, a deteriorating safety net, and persistent stigma. How do weengage with patients who face so many obstacles? How do we preserveourselves while we do this important work? For many of us, CSAM conferences offer a salve by way of time spent withlike-minded colleagues addressing these core questions. This year, wecontinue the tradition by providing a review of addiction fundamentals, but with a twist: we have asked each presenter to comment on strategiesfor education and advocacy in their areas of expertise. Robert Lustig, MD,author of “The Hacking of the American Mind,” will discuss his work ontechnology and addiction. Fay Zenoff, MBA, director of the Center for OpenRecovery, will discuss the role personal recovery can play in our work. Wewill show the documentary “The Providers,” and chat with the filmmakerand a physician featured in the film about battling the opioid crisis in ruralNew Mexico. A comedian in recovery will perform at our dessert receptionand share her own journey to advocacy. At the time of this writing, our planners are putting the finishing touchesto the board exam preparation track, mutual help meetings, casediscussions, and pre-conference workshops. Their dedication to craftinga comprehensive conference, featuring diverse and memorable speakers, makes me optimistic about our field. The questions we face are big, but sois the tent we are building.See you inside.Tauheed Zaman, MD, Conference ChairUniversity of California, San FranciscoSan Francisco VA Health Care System2 Addiction Medicine Review Course and Board Exam Preparation Track 2019CONFERENCEPLANNING COMMITTEETauheed Zaman, MD, Conference ChairIngeborg Schafhalter-Zoppoth, MD, Vice-ChairSharone Abramowitz, MD, FASAMCynthia Chatterjee, MD, FASAMPy Driscoll, MDMatthew Goldenberg, DO, FASAMMitika Kanabar, MD, MPHTipu Khan, MD, FAAFP, FASAMKaren Miotto, MD, DFASAMRicardo Restrepo, MD, MPHDavid Tian, MD, MPPTakeo Toyoshima, MDFarah Zaidi, MDKen Saffier, MD, FASAM, MERF RepresentativeJean Marsters, MD, Chair, CSAM Education CommitteeBOARD EXAM PREPARATIONMason Turner, MD, FASAM, Co-ChairChwen-Yuen Angie Chen, MD, FACP, FASAM, Co-ChairDustin DeYoung, MDThomas Meeks, MD, FASAMMarie Mulligan, MDJohn Tsuang, MD
