Asthe main East-West transportation corridor across the state,I-90 is the critical link connecting western Washington’slarge population centers, businesses, and ports with the ruralcommunities, agricultural industries, and opportunitiesof eastern Washington. Safe and reliable travel over I-90 isessential to the economic vitality and livability of our state.The planned improvements for the first five-mile projectinclude:xxRemoving and replacing deteriorated concrete pavement;xx Expanding the current lane configuration to six lanesfrom four lanes to increase capacity;xx Stabilizing unstable rock slopes to improve safety;xx Realigning sharp curves to increase sight distance toimprove safety:xx Building a new, more efficient snowshed to preventavalanches from reaching the roadway and minimizeroad closures due to avalanche;xx Expanding the chain-up/chain-off areas for passengerand freight vehicles; andxxConstructing larger bridges and culverts to facilitatemovement of people and wildlife, restore stream flows,and balance sensitive ecosystems.Project improvements of the first five miles are scheduled forcompletion in 2017.13
