Healing Through a New StartFine Golda publication produced byCarli’s StoryChief Executive OfficerCarli had a tremendously rough start in life. At birth she tested positive for methamphetamine, she was removed, returned, and removed again from her biological mother’s care repeatedly. By the time she was ten years old,Carli had been in and out of 13 different foster placements. As a child she had experienced chaos, abuse, andneglect. In return she developed defiant and aggressive behaviors which made it impossible to maintain in anyfoster family placement for very long. Her behaviors continued toescalate to the point of self-harm and eventually she attempted suicide.Jim FitzGerald, MSW, MPABoard of DirectorsPam Schapper - President, WhitefishJohn Watson - President Elect, Great FallsRev. Lamborn StreetHelena, MT 59601(406) 457-4804www.intermountain.org2Intermountain CEO Jim FitzGerald (right) discussing the exciting potential of ourPureView partnership with his Executive Assistant Anne Wilmoth.Greetings from our CEOIntermountain is achieving greater missional impact through our “strategicunions” with other mission-related organizations. This expansion willnot only make our mental health services for children and families moreaccessible, but will also allow us to integrate with other health professionalsto effectively and efficiently merge all of our unique competencies andresources. In the last year alone, this exciting initiative has resulted in ourclinical staff being embedded in the Billings-based Family Support Network, the Helena-based PureView Health Center, and St. Peter’s Health PediatricUnit.Because children with behavioral health issues often have co-occurringprimary health care needs, parents can be stressed with multipleappointments in different locations. To address these challenges,Intermountain is pleased to announce our placement in a new school-basedclinic, created in partnership with the PureView East Helena Clinic and EastHelena Public Schools. This clinic will provide primary, dental, pharmacy, and behavioral health services in one convenient location. The clinic, locatedon the grounds of East Helena's new Prickly Pear Elementary School, willprovide immediate access to integrated care for students, their families, andthe broader East Helena and Helena communities. When Carli arrived at Intermountain, she was distrustful of adults. Shewould attempt to distance herself from others by telling graphic storiesof the abuses she had suffered. Carli was very jealous of peers andwould respond to everyday frustrations with outbursts of anger andaggression. In school, she was overwhelmed and expressed that she felt“stupid”, but would not accept any help.Throughout her first year of treatment, Carli was very resistant tothe process. There were concerns about how little progress she wasmaking, but her team kept marching forward, ever hopeful that Carlimight one day be successful within a family setting. Carli stated, “Myhope and my dream was to be adopted. But I thought that I would never be adopted, and so I continued to actout and be crazy. Why should I act like I might be adopted if that was never going to happen anyway?”Carli started to make baby steps forward, and then those steps continued to grow and grow. Carli continued towork on deepening her relationships with staff, began to use her words to express her feelings, and her aggressivebehaviors started to decrease. She had developed supportive relationships with her teachers, learned to ask forand accept their help, and even became a leader in the classroom. Her peer relationships became appropriateand positive, and she was able to develop healthy and genuine friendships like other girls her age. And when shegot frustrated and overwhelmed, she was able to explore and process her feelings without regressing to unsafebehaviors. “That’s when I started to change and began“Intermountain is a place that helps kidsacting like a person who actually wanted a family,”Carli recalls.discover how to deal with their feelings. Icouldn’t trust adults, because I didn’t knowAs Intermountain continues to make its services more accessible, we increasethe overall impact we have on prevention and early intervention by moreefficiently reaching greater numbers of children and families. Our promptresponse, followed up with effective service, is reducing the need for moreintensive and costly care in the longer term.A family placement was identified for Carli, andhow to. It took a while, but eventually Ithough the transition was exciting, scary, andbegan to trust everyone at Intermountain.”overwhelming, she was able to use the tools she hadlearned and the relationships she had developed toCarlihelp her navigate this difficult transition. “When wewere first introduced to Carli by Intermountain staff, we heard the story of an angry child, a wild child, a childfor whom boundaries did not exist, and who fought anyone who attempted to impose them on her. But the Carliwe met one cold January morning was a very different child,” Carli’s parents stated. As we continue to grow as an organization, we want to thank you forcontinually investing in our mission through generous contributions of timeand resources. Your generosity is the gift that enables Intermountain to investin children, provide caring solutions, and create strong families and healthycommunities now and formany years to come.-- Jim FitzGerald, Intermountain CEOCarli went to live with her new family, and despite some minor bumps, she settled well into her new home. Shestill experienced some normal frustrations, but she and her parents had learned how to walk over those bumpstogether. Carli and her parents soon sealed the deal with an official adoption! “It was a special day on whichthe dream came true that I didn’t think was possible.” Carli and her family continue to stay in contact withthe friends they made at Intermountain and give updates on the family progress. Carli continued to do well inschool, played on a basketball team and a softball team that won the league championship, made great friendsalong the way, and recently graduated from high school.3

Brother Van died in 1919.A few years later, a man who would follow in Brother Van’s footstepswas born in Roundup. His name – Fred Collins.Fred’s mother died when he was just seven. He spent several years inan orphanage in Wyoming before attending high school in Edgar. In1941 Fred joined the Army Air Corps. In his biography, “Under MyOwn Fig Tree,” he tells of a pending suicide mission trip. During thatmission he prayed God would protect him, and in return he promisedto go to church every Sunday for the rest of his life. God answeredhis prayer and Fred returned home safely. In 1948, he attended RockyMountain College (also founded by Brother Van). It was duringhis college years that he answered God’s call into full ministry. Heattended Asbury Seminar and began serving the Methodist church inDrummond. It was while attending Pastor’s School in California thatFred met Mary Gruenewald. They were married in 1956 and spent thenext 33 years side-by-side in ministry from Wibaux to Grass Range,Whitehall to Libby, Missoula to Plentywood going wherever neededand raising their daughters, Ruth and Lois.Fred and Mary were very dedicated to their ministry. In the mid-60’sFred had back surgery, and while the surgery went well, a few yearsFred and Mary Collinslater the issues flared up and Fred ended up in the hospital in traction. That was not going to stop them. Mary brought in a tape recorder so he could record his sermon.Fred and Mary were just as dedicated to Intermountain. They had learned of Intermountain through theirMethodist ministry. Fred had a heart for the children due to his own childhood experiences, and both he andMary recognized the important work Intermountain was doing to help children by using a relational modelof treatment, “Healing through healthy relationships.” They knew if children and families were healthier, communities would be healthier as well. Fred and Mary supported the children by giving to Intermountainmonthly for 34 consecutive years!“I give because I’m committed. I’mAfter Mary passed away in 2014, Fred moved intocommitted because Intermountaina retirement community. One of his neighbors wasis doing a great job with the kids,George Sherry who had worked at Intermountainduring summers while pursuing his master’s atand helping them get well.”University of Montana. The two became fast friends,Fred Collinsand they would travel together to Helena to attendRecognition Day. They were so pleased to be ableto celebrate the growth and progress of the kids who worked hard to heal and succeed at home. When SunriseCottage on the Intermountain campus was completed in 2015, Fred was there to deliver the invocation at thededication.Fred passed away in January. He and Mary are greatly missed, but their legacy lives on because of the childrenand families who benefited from their generosity.7
