Heroism AwardThe Heroism Award may be awarded to a youth member or adultleader who has demonstrated heroism and skill in saving orattempting to save life at minimum risk to self. Recognition maybe given to a youth member or adult leader. 2012Silver Beaver AwardThe Boy Scouts of America, acting through the National Court ofHonor and upon the nomination of the Sam Houston Area Councilpresents the Silver Beaver Award to persons for theirdistinguished service to youth. The Sam Houston Area Councilmakes a limited number of nominations each year, according tothe total number of units registered in the Council.This award is bestowed for noteworthy service of exceptionalcharacter to youth by registered adult volunteers. The award maynot be applied for personally, only those person who have beennominated by their Scouting peers are considered.Upon nomination by the Sam Houston Area Council, the NationalCourt of Honor of the Boy Scouts of America has authorized thepresentation of the Silver Beaver Award to the following Scouters:5

Colleen AustinColleen Austin has been an active Scouter in SkylineDistrict for 9 years. She is currently a Crew Advisor,Assistant Scout Master, Venturing RoundtableCommissioner, District Committee member and MeritBadge Counselor. Colleen has previously served asDistrict Vice Chair, Unit Commissioner, Webelos DenLeader, Cub Scout Assistant Den Leader and Tiger CubCoach.Colleen has earned the Cub Scout Den Leader Award, Cub Scout Pack TrainerAward and Boy Scout Leader’s Training Award. She has been honored with theDistrict Award of Merit. Colleen is a Brotherhood member of the Order of theArrow and is Wood Badge trained. She has staffed National Youth LeadershipTraining and the National Scout Jamboree.Colleen is a volunteer for the Houston Livestock and Rodeo and an instructorfor the National Rifle Association.Jon BennettEagle Scout Jon Bennett of the Arrowmoon Districthas served Scouting for 20 years. Forrest BjerkaasCommissioner.Forrest Bjerkaas has served Scouting for 11 years inthe Mustang and Texas Skies Districts. He is anAssistant Scoutmaster, Chartered OrganizationRepresentative, Merit Badge Counselor andAssistant Council Commissioner. He has served asan Assistant Den Leader, Cubmaster, Cub ScoutRoundtable staff, Boy Scout Roundtable staff,Assistant District Commissioner and DistrictForrest has received the Scouter’s Training Award, the Scouter’s Key, theDistrict Award of Merit, the Arrowhead Honor, the Robert T. RootCommissioner Award and Distinguished Commissioner Service Award. He is aBrotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and has the James E. WestFellowship Award.Forrest serves as an Elder at Redeemer Community Church where he alsoteaches Sunday School and is a Community Group Leader. He is a volunteerwith the Katy Independent School District in many areas including the TroubleYouth Program, Junior Achievement and Partners in Education Board.Hazel BuckHazel Buck of the Raven District has served Scoutingfor over 40 years. She is a Den Leader. She hasserved as a Charter Organization Representative,Pack Committee Member, Committee Chair,Cubmaster, Assistant Cubmaster, Tiger Cub Coach,Den Leader, Assistant Den Leader, Merit BadgeCounselor, Cub Scout Roundtable Staff and on theDistrict Committee.Hazel has received the J.P. White District Lifetime Achievement Award and theSiempre Listo Award. She is a recipient of the God and Service Award. Hazelhas trained at the Philmont Training Center and Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow.Hazel is a member of Market Street Baptist Church where she has served as theSenior Activity Coordinator, Senior Program scheduler and Advisory BoardMember and founded the Ladies Sunday School Program.7

Carla BurnettCarla Burnett of the Iron Horse District has been anadult leader in Scouting for the past 15 years. She isthe District Commissioner for Iron Horse District.She has served as Den Leader, AssistantScoutmaster, Committee Chair, CharteredOrganization Representative, District Vice Chair,Assistant District Commissioner and DistrictCommittee Member.Carla has completed Wood Badge Training and has staffed multiple WoodBadge Courses. She is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. Carlahas been recognized with the Unit Leader Award of Merit, the District Award ofMerit, and the Methodist Cross and Flame.Carla is a member of Cypress Trails United Methodist Church where she isactive on many fronts, including leading UM Army Youth Mission trips.Bill CarrEagle Scout William (Bill) Carr has served Scoutingfor 14 years in the Mustang District. He is a CouncilExecutive Board Member and serves on the AuditCommittee. Bill is also a Council CommitteeMember, Assistant Scoutmaster and Merit BadgeCounselor. He has served as the Chairman of ScoutFair for three years and as Assistant Scout Fair Chairfor one year prior.Bill is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.Bill is a member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church. Bill has served as amember of the Board of Directors for the United Guaranty Corporation,Chartis, SureTec, and SunAmerica.8

Monica CrossMonica Cross of the Phoenix District has servedScouting for 13 years. She currently serves as CrewAdvisor and District Committee Member. She hasserved as a Committee Member, UnitCommissioner and Merit Badge Counselor.Monica has been awarded the Scouter Trainingward, Scouter's Key, Unit Leader Award of Merit,God and Country Award, Venturing Leadership Award and District Award ofMerit. She is an Ordeal member of the Order of the Arrow. Monica hascompleted Wood Badge Training, Powder Horn and attended training at thePhilmont Training Center. Monica is active in Venturing and High Adventuretrainings as both a trainer and Course Director for Kodiak.Monica is a member of Christ Church Cathedral where she has served as aSunday School teacher. She is a supporter of the Champions Roller WorldNational Skate Team, and has been a mentor of high school students.Dannie DavisDannie Davis has served Scouting for 19 years in theSkyline and W.L. Davis Districts. He is an AssistantScoutmaster. He has served as a Den Leader,Assistant Webelos Den Leader, AssistantScoutmaster, Associate Crew Advisor, DistrictCommittee Member, Order of the Arrow ChapterAdviser, and Council Committee member.Dannie has received the District Award of Merit,Skyline District Family of the Year Award, Den Leader Award, Webelos DenLeader Award and Scouter’s Training Award. He is a Vigil Member of the Orderof the Arrow, and has completed Wood Badge Training.Dannie has served as a Sunday School Assistant, Children’s Assistant Puppeteerand Army Youth Group Leader at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, andhas done various service projects with Men’s Groups. He has served in variousroles for the Woodland Heights Civic Club, school Band Booster, PTO and LittleLeague.9

Bernard GroceEagle Scout Bernard Groce has been an adult leaderin Scouting for the past 11 years. He is aScoutmaster. He has served as AssistantScoutmaster, Course Director for National YouthLeadership Training and staffed Wood Badge,Trainer’s EDGE and the National Advanced YouthLeadership Experience course at Philmont.Bernard has received the District Award of Merit. He is a Vigil Member of theOrder of the Arrow and has completed Wood Badge training. He has beenrecognized with the Bayshore District Family of the Year, Bayshore DistrictOrder of the Arrow Chapter Carol Edson Award, and the Catholic ScoutingCommittee Bronze Pelican and Scroll of Honor.Bernard is a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church and provides youthkarate instruction.Sam GroverStephen “Sam” Grover has been an active Scouterfor 29 years serving in the Arrowhead, Tomahawkand North Star Districts. He is a Troop Committeemember, Council Committee Member andChairman of the SHAC Ten Commandments Hike.Sam has served as District Chairman, Council BoardMember, Unit Commissioner, Troop CommitteeChair and Member, Merit Badge Counselor, CharterOrganization Representative, Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, AssistantVarsity Coach and Crew Advisor.Sam has received the District Award of Merit, Scouter’s Training Award andYouth and Adult Religious Awards. He is Wood Badge trained and has servedon Wood Badge staff.Sam is an active member of the Richmond Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ ofLatter-day Saints. He has served as a Bishop of the Mission Bend Ward, StakeYoung Men’s President in the Richmond Stake of the LDS Church and HighCouncilor.10

Fabian GuerraFabian Guerra has served Scouting for 21 years inthe Rising Star and Copperhead Districts. He iscurrently a Merit Badge Counselor. He haspreviously served as a Tiger Cub Coach, DenLeader, Webelos Den Leader, AssistantScoutmaster, Crew Advisor, CharteredOrganization Representative and UnitCommissioner.Fabian earned the Arrow of Light Award, and is a recipient of the Den Leaderaward, Cub Scouter Award and District Award of Merit. He is an Ordealmember in the Order of the Arrow.Fabian is a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. He is a FourthDegree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, and works with young adults to helpthem prepare for the sacrament of confirmation. He also volunteers withSpecial Olympics.Cathey HarrisonCathey Harrison has been an active Scouter inSkyline District for 11 years. She currently serves asthe District Commissioner Troop Committeemember and Merit Badge Counselor. She haspreviously served as Assistant DistrictCommissioner, Unit Commissioner, District ViceChair, District Committee Member and Boy ScoutRoundtable Staff, Webelos Den Leader, DenLeader, and Tiger Cub Coach.Cathey has received the Cub Scouter Award and Webelos Den Leader Award.She has been honored by the Skyline District with the District Award of Meritand Family of the Year. Cathey is Wood Badge trained and has staffed WoodBadge.Cathey is an active member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. She is theChristian Education Director, Emeritus for the church’s religious instruction ofthe youth and adults. Cathey also volunteers at the Heights Rotary Club andOpera in the Heights.11

Jim HuguenardJames “Jim” Huguenard has been involved inGolden Arrow District for over 13 years. Hecurrently serves on the Council Executive Boardand is a Charter Organization Representative,Troop Committee Member and District Vice Chair.Jim has served as Tiger Cub Coach, Den Leader,Webelos Den Leader, Pack Committee Member,and Pack Committee Chair.Jim is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. Jim has completedWood Badge training and has served as trainer for University of Scouting andCub Scout Leader Pow Wow. He has been recognized with the Tiger LeaderAward, Den Leader Award, Webelos Den Leader Award, Unit Service Award,and District Service Award, Scouter's Key and District Award of Merit.Jim is a member of Bethel Church and is a volunteer at Second Baptist School,where he has served as President of the Eagle Athletic Booster Club and theParent Association Board.Victor KooshEagle Scout Victor Koosh has served Scouting as anadult volunteer for 17 years. He is a CouncilExecutive Board Member and serves as a CouncilCommittee Member. Victor has served as anAssistant Scoutmaster, Associate Crew Advisor,District Committee and Associate Lodge Adviser forColonneh Lodge.Victor is a Vigil Honor Member of the Order of the Arrow and is a recipient ofthe Order of the Arrow Founder’s Award. He earned the Arrow of Light and is aSTET Award recipient and lifetime member of Alpha Phi Omega.Victor is a member of Emerson UU Church where he is a Choir Member, andserves on the Stewardship Committee. He is on the board of Prepared 4 Life,where he works with Lemonade Day.12

Louis KoronkaLouis Koronka has served as a leader in Scouting for15 years in the Arrowmoon District. Louis serves asan Advisor for both a Crew and Post chartered bythe Brazos County Sheriff’s Office. He has servedas a Unit Commissioner and District CommitteeMember.Louis has received the Arrow of Light Award,District Award of Merit Award, Cub Scouter Award, Scoutmaster Award ofMerit, Scouter’s Training Award, Venturing Training Award, Daniel Carter BeardMasonic Scouter Award, Regional Venturing Leadership Award, DistinguishedCommissioner Award, Arrowhead Honor Award, Commissioner Key andExplorer Advisor Key.Louis is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a Master Mason. He workswith the American Red Cross First Aid/CPR program in providing instruction toyouth and adults. Louis conducts activities for youth in the communityincluding fingerprinting, checking of child safety seats and NRA firearminstruction.Melissa LockeMelissa Locke has served in Scouting for 19 years inBrahman District. She is currently a CommitteeChair, Charter Organization Representative andUnit Commissioner. She has served as Tiger CubDen Leader, Cub Scout Den Leader, Webelos DenLeader, Cubmaster, Assistant Cubmaster, Cub ScoutDay Camp Staff and Archery and Horsemanshipinstructor at El Rancho Cima.Melissa has completed Wood Badge training and served as an instructor atUniversity of Scouting.She is heavily involved in the East Bernard community and schools. She hasbeen selected by the East Bernard Chamber of Commerce as the Citizen of theYear for her work with youth in Scouting, 4-H and school activities and wasselected to serve as Grand Marshal of the Christmas Parade.13

Mike McAnallyMike McAnally has been a Scouter in the DavidCrockett District for 11 years. He is an AssistantScoutmaster, District Committee Member, UnitCommissioner, Merit Badge Counselor andAssociate Chapter Adviser for the Order of theArrow. He has served as a Den Leader, WebelosDen Leader and Assistant Cubmaster. He hastrained at Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow, Universityof Scouting and Wood Badge.Mike has received the David Crockett District Award of Merit. He is aBrotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and has completed WoodBadge Training.Mike is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He has served as a volunteerfirefighter with the Berlin, Mill Creek, Zionsville Volunteer Fire Department, andis currently serving as Fire Chief.Cecil McConnell, Jr.Scouting.Cecil McConnell Jr. has been an active Scouter inthe Flaming Arrow and Raven Districts for over 15years. He currently serves as the CommitteeChairman and District Committee member. Cecilhas served as a Cubmaster, Webelos Den Leader,Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, and UnitCommissioner. He has served as a trainer at manyDistrict and Council events including University ofCecil has received the District Award of Merit, Scouter’s Key, Scouter’s TrainingAward, Scoutmaster Award of Merit, Arrowhead Honor and the James E. WestSociety Fellowship Award. Cecil is a member of the Order of the Arrow and hascompleted Wood Badge Training.Cecil is an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the Post, District,State, and National levels, and was honored with the VFW’s CommunityOrganization Award. He is the Post Scouting Chairman, District ScoutingChairman, part of the State and National Scouting Team, and has served ascoach for youth soccer and baseball.14

Cathy McFarlandCathy McFarland has been active as an adult leaderin Scouting for over 21 years in the formerTomahawk and now Thunder Wolf District. She iscurrently a District Committee Member and TroopCommittee Member. She has served as DistrictVice Chair in both Tomahawk and Thunder WolfDistricts.Cathy has been honored with the District Award of Merit and the DistrictFamily of the Year Award.Cathy is a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church, where she has servedas a Youth Group Chaperone and Deacon. She has served as President and as avolunteer for the Elkins High School Pro Grad organization. Cathy hasvolunteered with the school’s Y.E.S. program at the local elementary, middleand high schools, Girl Scouts, and as Block Safety Mom and Team Mom for theswim team, soccer team and Little League team.Gary MooreGary Moore of the Brazos District has been aScouting volunteer for 21 years. He currentlyserves as Assistant Scoutmaster and DistrictCommittee Member. He has served as a DenLeader, Scoutmaster, Merit Badge Counselor andBoy Scout Roundtable Commissioner.Gary has been honored with the District Award ofMerit and Brazos District Gator Award. Gary has completed Wood Badgetraining, and has served on Wood Badge Staff. He has served as a trainer forTrainers EDGE.Gary is a member of Triumph Christian Church in Rosenberg, where he servedas a member of the setup team. He has been a board member of the LamarBand Booster Club. Gary is a member of the Coastal Prairie Chapter of theTexas Master Naturalist.15

Zeb NashScouting and Wood Badge.Zebulun "Zeb" Nash has been active in Scouting for15 years in the W. L. Davis District. He is currentlyan Assistant Scoutmaster and Merit BadgeCounselor. He has served as Scoutmaster,Committee Member and Order of the ArrowChapter Adviser for W. L. Davis District. Zeb hasserved on the staffs of two National Jamborees, the100 Anniversary World Jamboree, University ofZeb is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. He has beenrecognized with the Scoutmaster’s Key and is Wood Badge trained.Zeb is active with the Missouri University S & T Board of Trustees and AlumniAssociation, having served as President of the Alumni Association. Zeb isresponsible for the creation of two scholarships at the University. He servedwith the Family Service Center of Houston as a Director for 6 years. He has alsoserved as a volunteer with the Peace Corps in Kenya, East Africa.Mike PatrickMike Patrick has been active in Scouting for thepast 34 years. He is a Council Executive BoardMember and Council Committee Member. Heserved in an advisory capacity with regard toproperty acquisition related to the Bovay ScoutRanch. Mike has served on many of the Councils’committees, most recently serving on theProperties Master Plan Committee.Mike has served as a member of the Philmont Scout Ranch ExecutiveCommittee since 2008, and is currently a member of the Business and FinanceCommittee.Mike is a member of the River Oaks Baptist Church, where he serves as aDeacon and member of the Finance Committee.16

Cindy ScanlandCindy Scanland has served Scouting as an adultleader for 15 years, first in Polaris and now PhoenixDistrict. She currently is the District Commissionerof the Phoenix District. Cindy has served as TigerCub Den Leader, Cub Scout Den Leader, WebelosDen Leader Committee Chair, Troop CommitteeMember, Crew Committee Chairman and AssistantDistrict Commissioner.Cindy is an Ordeal Member of the Order of the Arrow. She has trained atUniversity of Scouting and Philmont Training Center. Cindy has received theDistrict Award of Merit, Cub Scout Den Leader Award, Webelos Den LeaderAward, Venturing Leadership Award, District Committee Key, CommissionerKey and Arrowhead Honor Award.As a member of Kinsmen Lutheran Church, Cindy helped launched a newcongregation, Celebration Church. She has served as a Sunday School Teacherand hospitality program leader. Cindy has volunteered in local schools inseveral areas including room mother, computer lab assistant, parent reader,event chaperone and orchestra board treasurer.Chip SchneiderEagle Scout Chip Schneider is a member of theBoard of Directors for the Sam Houston AreaCouncil. He is an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop641 at Chapelwood United Methodist Church. Chiphas served on the Council’s Board since 2007 andas its Treasurer since 2008.As a young adult and then adult volunteer, Chip hasrepresented the Council and South Central Region at many regional andnational events, including serving as the National Vice President of Exploring.Chip joins his father and grandfather who are also past Silver Beaver recipients.Chip and his family attend Memorial Drive United Methodist Church. He alsoserves as an Advisory Board Member for The Woods Project, and is a recentpast member of the St. Pius X School Board.17

Bob ShrewsberryBob Shrewsberry has served Scouting as an adultvolunteer for 17 years. He is currently a CommitteeMember and Campmaster at Camp Strake. Bob hasserved as a Troop Committee Chair, Den Leader,Webelos Den Leader, Assistant Scoutmaster,District Committee Member, Merit BadgeCounselor and as Assistant Scoutmaster andScoutmaster at several National Scout Jamborees.Bob is a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow and is Wood Badge trained. Hehas received the District Award of Merit, Tall Timbers Pine Cone Award and theDen Leader, Webelos Den Leader, Cub Scouter and Scouter awards.Bob is a member of The Woodlands United Methodist Church. He is a memberof the National Rifle Association where he is an Instructor for youth shootingsports. Bob has served the South Montgomery County Fire Department asExecutive Board Member and Firefighter.Kevin SmithDonald “Kevin” Smith has been active as an adultleader in Scouting for over 14 years in the GeorgeStrake District. He currently is the CommitteeChair, District Committee Member, AssistantDistrict Commissioner, and Unit Commissioner.Kevin has served in various leadership roles at thepack, troop and crew levels, and as District Chair,District Vice Chair, Boy Scout and Cub ScoutRoundtable Commissioner, Council CommitteeMember, Winter Camp Director and Horseshoe Bend Summer Camp Director.Kevin has been honored with the District Award of Merit and District Family ofthe Year Award. He has completed Wood Badge training.Kevin volunteers in various roles for St. Paul Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club ofHuntsville, Project Grad, Robert Josey Scout Lodge Board of Directors, GirlScouts, youth sports and a golf tournament for student scholarships.18

Jennifer SpangleJennifer has served Scouting for 10 years in theMustang and Texas Skies Districts. She is currentlya Council Committee Member, DistrictAdvancement Chairman, Troop committeemember, and serves as the Coordinator for the SamHouston Area Council's InSTEP Program.She has previously served as a Tiger Cub Coach,Den Leader, Webelos Den Leader, Unit Commissioner, Cub Scout RoundtableStaff and Cub Scout Day Camp Staff.Jennifer has earned the Tiger Cub Leader award, Cub Scouter award, Scouter’sTraining award and District Award of Merit. She is Wood Badge trained and hasserved on Wood Badge staff.Jennifer is a member of Epiphany Catholic Community where she is the craftcoordinator. She is a Karate instructor with Sealy YMCA.Derek SpierDerek Spier has been active in Scouting for 15years. He currently serves as Scoutmaster, CouncilCommittee Chair of COPE and El Rancho CimaSummer Camp Director. He has served asChartered Organization Representative, CommitteeChair, Cubmaster, Webelos Den Leader, Cub ScoutRoundtable Staff, and Boy Scout Roundtable Staffand National Youth Leadership Training Staff.Derek has attended National Camping School, Philmont Training CenterConference, and Wood Badge. He is the recipient of the James E. WestFellowship Award, District Award of Merit, and Family of the Year Award.
