Dear Parishioners at Our Lady of Grace,Recently a friend asked me that they thought it must be so wonderful and beautiful to be soclose to Jesus as a priest during the Mass.The answer is yes and no. It is at times wonderful. At other times it is more like theencounter Peter had in the Gospel today. Being in God’s presence isn’t always a moment ofrejoicing.The first reading also expresses this truth. There has always been in the old and newtestament, the account of this experience. Getting closer to God can sometimes feel evenpainful. Our sinfulness can become glaringly apparent in the light of God’s grace.What happens when we are really in God’s presence is that we are finally able to see our ownsinfulness. Why? God is love. We do not fear our own sinfulness when in God’s presence.Rather, we are able to see it clearly (almost like for the first time) knowing that God is loveand he wants only to forgive, heal, and empower us.The initial shock of seeing our own unworthiness in the light of God’s face is glaring however.It doesn’t stay that way though. It is part of a process that leads to nothing less than joy, joy,joy; joy down in my heart.In Christ,Fr. Jeremy St. Martin4!

Mike:Blessing Ourselves with Holy Water!So many of the small gestures that we learn early on in our Catholic lives have various levels ofmeaning. And too often we can!only!stay at the level of, “This is just what you do”. Blessing ourselves withholy water is one of them.!As we enter and upon leaving the church, we dip our fingers into holy water and make the sign of thecross; this simple gesture is a reminder of our baptism. The sign of the cross in the name of the Father, the Sonand! the Holy Spirit is a prayer, a blessing, and a sacramental. For us Catholics, it is a reminder of Christ’ passion andprofessing our faith in a Triune God.!So, you can see, when we dip our fingers into the holy water font as we enter a church, andmake the sign of the cross over ourselves, we are reconnecting with that mysterious and foundational experience of receiving thesacrament of baptism.!!The!Catechism of the Catholic Church!explains why water plays such an essential!role in the life of the Church.!!First: “The symbolism of water signifies the Holy Spirit’s action in Baptism, since after the invocation of theHoly Spirit it becomes the efficacious sacramental sign of new birth: just as the gestation of our first birth tookplace in water, so the water of Baptism truly signifies that our birth into the divine life is given to us in the HolySpirit. As ‘by one Spirit we were all baptized,’ so we are also ‘made to drink of one Spirit.’ Thus the Spirit is alsopersonally the living water welling up from Christ crucified as its source and welling up in us to eternallife”!(CCC 694).!!Second: Holy water is what the Church calls a “sacramental.” The Catechism defines sacramentals like this (#1667):!Holy Mother Church has, moreover, instituted sacramentals. These are sacred signs which bear a resemblance to the!sacraments. They signify effects, particularly of a spiritual nature, which are obtained through the intercession of the!Church. By them, men are disposed to receive the chief effect of the sacraments, and various occasions in!life are rendered holy.!!!Third: Locating the holy water fonts at the entrance to our churches symbolizes the difference between ! !!ordinary space and sacred space. When we enter into the holy place, we bless ourselves with holy water. ! !!We leave behind the worldly noise and confusion that surrounds our normal, everyday activities, !!!!and we are refreshed and renewed by the order, silence, reverence, and beauty of the sacred space, !!!the space used only for prayer and worship.!!The!Catechism!further instructs about the need for a place within the church walls for remembrance of this birth in the life!of grace.!“The gathering of the People of God begins with Baptism; a church must have a place for the celebration ofBaptism (baptistry) and for fostering remembrance of the baptismal promises (holy water font)” (CCC 1185)!It is for this reason of renewing our baptismal covenant that the placement of the baptismal font is typically close to theentrance of the worship space.! Just as one enters the Christian faith through Baptism, so, too, do we enter the church byrenewing our entrance into the Church.
