Our Lady of GraceJanuary 20, 2019Dunstable, Groton & Pepperell!Dear Parishioners at Our Lady of Grace,The cornucopia of truth overflowing, which is today’s gospel, has a few nourishments that I wouldlike to point out. One is the theme of obedience and the other is the theme of joy.The obedience theme runs strong through the whole Bible and especially in the Gospels. We seetoday at the dawn of Christ’s public ministry, (the time when his disciples first began to believe inhim) Jesus’s mother ordering the servants to be obedient. She tells them to, “Do whatever he tells you.” In otherwords, Mary is ordering us to be obedient to Jesus. How does this work out in our lives? One way is through liturgical discipline. What is liturgy? What is “liturgical?”One thing it means is the rules (litigations) we follow when we gather to pray at Mass. The way we pray at Massgives us a chance to practice obedience. How can we do that better? It is good to read the rules. It is only then that we can follow them. They are indeedwritten down. eneral-instruction-of-the-roman-missalThe Table of contents is:Chapter I: The Importance and Dignity of the Celebration of the EucharistChapter II: The Structure of the Mass, Its Elements, and Its PartsChapter III: Duties and Ministries in the MassChapter IV: The Different Forms of Celebrating MassChapter V: The Arrangement and Ornamentation of Churches for the Celebration of the EucharistChapter VI: The Requisites for the Celebration of MassChapter VII: The Choice of the Mass and Its Parts ChapterChapter VIII: Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions and MassesChapter IX: Adaptations within the Competence of Bishops and Bishops' ConferencesfortheDeadThis book leads to the other theme in today’s gospel: joy.The description of joy is everywhere in the readings, from the first, in which God says he will rejoice in us in theway a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, to the Gospel, where there is copious amounts of delicious wine all butoverflowing at the wedding celebration, to the second reading where the unity of all comes by the symphoniceffect of the Holy Spirit creating different notes, tambers, colors, and textures in each of us to make a great workof surpassing benefit. The obedience and the joy interconnect. We can see this truth in microcosm in the spiritual disciple of the liturgy;in the following of the rules for our gatherings most especially on Sundays. Some of the rules that are in there that are interesting, have to do with singing. Which parts are to be sung andhow are they to be sung is in there. How people are to stand and kneel and sit, and when, are all in there. Thestanding rules for the congregation at the offertory time is there for example. The rules about the saying orsinging of antiphons at the beginning of Mass and at the time of the distribution of communion is there. The rulesabout genuflections (kneeling on one knee) upon entering a Church and a Sanctuary within a Church with atabernacle containing the Most Blessed Sacrament are in there.Learning to read these rules is fun. It is like learning to read music or learning how to dance ballet or any groupdancing. Some of us can and should do this kind of reading. Others are to be guided and helped by those whocan do the reading. The rules are such that they all have to be read in order to really understand any particular one. Many of theserules are right in the “Breaking Bread” book in the pews of every Church as they have to be according to the SecondVatican Council. Again, joy producing rules. The joy that is produced, in the gathering of the Sunday Eucharist, is and always has been nothing less thanawesome. Obedience and joy go hand in hand, for God is good. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal is one of the best books currently in print. It is the book that resultsin the biggest ongoing international manifestation of unity and peace which fills our hearts to overflowing with joy.!In Christ,Fr. Jeremy St. Martin4!
