VCBC SLG—The Gospel of JohnLesson #12Concluding Chapters—Purpose of WritingAs we come to the final chapters of the Gospel of John, we are reminded of his old age and hisdesire to present once again the gospel account of Jesus, in addition to the existing three Gospelaccounts (the Synoptics), to a generation about 60 years removed from the time of Jesus, with hehimself—the sole surviving eye-witness among the Apostles to the teachings and deeds of Jesus.Because of time, we shall focus our lesson today on the uniqueness of John’s account concerningthe crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, because in both cases, his accounts end with a veryimportant message to his readers, emphasizing the truthfulness and trustworthiness of his firsthanded, eye-witness accounts. The Crucifixion (19: 17-42)Jesus carrying the cross. 17 Carrying His own cross, He went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is calledGolgotha).[Skipping the part of Simon carrying the cross of Jesus]The two thieves18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two others—one on each side and Jesus in themiddle.[Skipping the curses and repentance of one of the thieves]The Sign: “King of the Jews”19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the Kingof the Jews. 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified wasnear the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests ofthe Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimedto be king of the Jews.” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”[Matthew mentions the sign was nailed above Jesus’ head, a likely reference to the “cross” shapeof the Cross (contrary to modern scholarship). John adds that it was written in three languages (asmuch as Pilate might try to mock the Jews with the sign, the three languages powerfully conveythe universal nature of Jesus’ salvation); plus Pilot’s refusal to change it.]Dividing Jesus’ garment23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, wovenin one piece from top to bottom.24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said,“They divided my clothes among themand cast lots for my garment.”[Ps.22:18]So this is what the soldiers did.1

[John emphasizes that “This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled].The Women at the Cross25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, andMary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he lovedstanding nearby, He said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here isyour mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.[John adds details that he personally witnessed and heard, while all other apostles had fled, andsome church traditions had Mary followed John to Ephesus].It is Finished28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished (tetelestai), and so that Scripturewould be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so theysoaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.30 When He had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished (tetelestai),.” With that, Hebowed His head and gave up His spirit.[The saying of “I am thirsty” is not to fulfill Scripture, but rather the yielding of His spirit in dyingis. The word, “finished” in v,28 and v.29 is exactly the same in Greek, which might be besttranslated, in this case, as “accomplished.”]More Fulfillments of Scriptures—special to John’s account31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Becausethe Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left o
