Queens LibraryADULT LEARNING CENTERS (ALCs)Queens Library has seven Adult Learning Centers with highly qualified professionalstaff and volunteers who provide educational assistance to adults 17 years of ageand older. For more information, please visit our website at: www.queenslibrary.org/adultlearning.ENGLISH AS A SECOND OR OTHER LANGUAGE (ESOL)The Adult Learning Centers provide English for Speakers of Other Languages(ESOL) Classes for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced students. This programemphasizes how to speak and understand English through classes, smallconversation practice groups, and computer-assisted instruction programs, as wellas books, audio and video materials for self-study. Vocabulary and grammar areconveyed through lessons about everyday situations, such as going to the doctoror supermarket, or renting an apartment. Classes are scheduled during evening,daytime and weekends. English classes are also offered in various communitylibraries through New Americans Program’s ESOL services.ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE)The Adult Learning Centers provide Adult Basic Education (ABE) Classes in basicmath, reading, and writing skills. Adults enrolled in ABE classes can begin with basicliteracy skills and advance to high school equivalency preparation, postsecondaryeducation, and vocational training. Real-world materials are used to enhance theeducational experience of the adult learner at every stage. ABE classes are offeredvia in-class and computer-assisted instruction programs at the Adult LearningCenters. Classes are scheduled during evening, daytime, and weekends.3

Adult Learner ProgramPRE-HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY CLASSES (PRE-HSE)New York State has a new high school equivalency test called the Test AssessingSecondary Completion (TASC) which replaces the General Educational Development(GED) as the primary pathway to a New York State High School Equivalency Diploma.The Queens Library offers free preparation classes for this test to provide adultlearners who can already read and do basic math with instruction in subject areasrequired to pass the TASC and simulated practice tests. Preparation for the TASCis offered via in-class and computer-assisted instruction programs at the AdultLearning Centers. Queens LibraryTWO PATHWAYS TO OBTAIN YOUR HSE DIPLOMAQueens Library Adult Learner Program provides two pathways to obtaining yourHigh School Equivalency diploma!Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) (formerly the GED)New York State has a new high school equivalency test called the TestAssessing Secondary Completion (TASC) which replaces the General EducationalDevelopment (GED) as the primary pathway to a New York State High SchoolEquivalency Diploma. The test takes approximately nine hours to completeand includes a writing assessment. The test is available to adults who did notgraduate from high school or whose diplomas may not be recognized by NewYork State. NEDP is a competency-based system that expects adults todemonstrate their ability in a series of simulations that parallel job and lifesituations. In this program, students can work completely online, meet with anassessor weekly, and maintain flexibility and confidentiality. Plus, students canwork towards their diploma at home, the library, or wherever they have accessto a computer. Earning a high school diploma through the NEDP takes 6 to 12months. Adult Learner ProgramYOUNG ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM (YALP)YALP provides educational assistance to young adults 16-24 years of age. The QueensLibrary’s Young Adult Literacy Program serves as a resource and referral center andprovides young adult participants with a wide array of instructional, vocational,recreational, family support, and social services. YALP services include Pre-HSE(High School Equivalency) classes using Common Core literacy and math curricula,job readiness and resume preparation workshops, computer-assisted instruction,multicultural workshops, internships, and 5 hours of case management servicesweekly. All young adultparticipants are encouraged to consider higher education as a desirable follow-up tohigh school graduation.COLLEGE AND CAREER ACCESSAll young people should feel optimistic and prepared for the future they envision forthemselves. For some young people that is college or trade school, while for others itis careers or the military. Staff will work with young people to plan for their chosenfuture and ensure they have the resources and skills to be successful in that choice.6
