9About ACDelcodual flow oil filtersDUAL FLOW OIL FILTERSACDelco Dual Flow Oil Filters contain two separate elements inside the one housing. This allows for clean oil to bedelivered to the engine lubrication circuit while providing the additional filtering required by Diesel engines. One ofthese is a full flow element which filters the oil and supplies it to the engine’s lubrication circuit. The other element is aby-pass element, the oil which passes through this element is returned back to the sump. The by-pass element has afiner micron rating, and is therefore a more efficient filter than the normal full flow elements. This arrangement allowsthe engine to maintain constant clean oil supply, while providing continual high filtration of the oil in the sump.The two different oil streams are separated by an internal tube arrangement. Once oil has passed through each of theelements, (from the outside to the inside), there are two separate chambers. One of these is for oil going back to thesump and one is for oil going to the engine. 10Why is Changing anOil Filter Important?FILTER FUNCTIONThe engine oil filter traps harmful abrasive contaminants and prevents them from damaging engine parts. Theimportance of the oil filter becomes clear with an understanding of the operation of engine parts that are protectedby the filter.When the engine is running, oil enters the oil pump through a screened intake (oil pick-up). The screened intake islocated in the crankcase near the bottom of the oil pan. Oil is drawn through the screened intake and forced by the oilpump through the oil filter and on to the engine’s moving parts.All moving parts and the cylinder walls require clean oil for proper operation. The oil filter cleans the oil, which is the“life blood” of the lubrication system. Cleaning takes place as oil passes through the filter element or filtering material.ACDelco offers a variety of filters to effectively and efficiently remove harmful contaminants from the engine’s fluidsystems. Forinstance, a standard ACDelco Oil Filter can trap virtually all contaminants larger than 25 microns.Micron RatingA Micron Rating represents the size of the contaminant particles the material will filter. A micron is a metricunit of measure used to determine the distance from one point to another. It is used like the centimetre andmillimetre to measure the length, width, or diameter of objects. Approximately 40 to 90 microns equal thediameter of human hair.Oil Filter FeaturesThe primary features for oil filter elements are:Particle Size RetentionACDelco has developed optimum particle size retention in filters by extensive testing. For example, the ACDelcoFull-Flow Oil Filter traps virtually all contaminants larger than 25 microns.Dirt-Holding CapacityDirt-holding capacity is the amount of contaminant that can be removed and held by the filter until the filter stopsfiltering. 12Oil Filter FaultdiagnosisCOLLAPSED OIL FILTEROil filter components are designed to withstand differential pressures much greater than those experienced duringnormal operating conditions.However, if the oil regulating valve, which regulates how much oil pressure is allowed through the filter andlubricating system, and the by-pass valve on the engine become “sticky” from dirt and contaminants, it may allowtoo much pressure into the filter. If a collapsed filter element is discovered, perform a complete inspection of the filterby-pass valve and the pressure regulator valve, as well as a review of the engine and its maintenance history.BULGED OIL FILTERWhen the regulating valve has become excessively dirty, it can get stuck in the closed position. When this happens,the oil that the oil pump sends to the engine increases in pressure. The excessive pressure can cause the oil filter tobulge out. In some cases, the oil filter can burst. A system that reaches 150 psi will deform most oil filters.CollapsedBulged
